I was so pissed my parents wouldn't take 11 year old me to this. I'm grateful now that they didn't. I might not be posting this if I had. Although I missed the realest festival of all time.

At the time, I wondered why they never did a Woodstock again after this. The severity of the debauchery completely flew over my head.

The live TRL coverage exposed my 11 year old brain to so many atrocities, but the RHCP cover of Fire in midst of the chaos was p. dope.

In hindsight, the lineup was kind of awful save for maybe 8 bands.

I was watching the live on paper view (thanks dad, thanks black box) when the riots and violence and fires in the crowd started and was like wtf

then the next couple days reading about it on the internet.....girls getting molested and raped....dumb frat boy idiots breaking and burning and destroying shit for no reason....huge collection of assholes congregated there

I had a friend (girl) who went with her dad and camped there, and she was like...there was a lot of crazy aggro shit going on and we got out of there early on Sunday

I don't know why the fuck WOODSTOCK '99 was booking bands like Limp Bizkit in the first place. Those concert organizers were fucking clueless, and the whole thing was just a bad idea. There's so many awesome, relatively peaceful music festivals, they were just openly inviting the worst of the worst to show up

Some Polish guy uploaded all of the complete sets from the festival. Damn. Spending all day. Reminding me of my "college rock" phase back when I was 17/18. I was really into Guster.
http://youtu.be/enTFSZAANi8
I think me and Czech were the only two people big into Guster. Somewhere, there's a picture of me with Guster from a meet and greet. This was after they "sold out" and their drummer started playing on a kit with drumsticks LOL. Is that Rich Vos introing them?

So many artists I forgot played at the Festival. Forgot that James Brown opened the festival. Ice Cube and DMX brought hip hop to Woodstock. So many headshaking at this clip. Rosie Perez and shitfaced Stephen Baldwin intro'ing DMX. ::) Crowd chanting "show us your tits" at Rosie Perez. ::) DMX's outfit. :)

Guster's big in New England and pretty much nowhere else. They were headlining arenas at one point and even recorded their live album here in Portland. Not quite as popular as they were 10 years ago but they're still big enough that there was a Guster tribute concert here a month or two ago LOL. One of the dudes from Guster actually showed up and 16 year old Kamala was pissed I had to work that night.

MTV were playing some of the performances and I remember some of the sets I really wanted to see (namely Metallica and Nine Inch Nails) performed at ungodly hour that I couldn't stay up for. I could be wrong but I think Metallica hit the stage at like 3 AM on one of the days and NIN also performed in the middle of the night sometime.

200,000 people - mostly teenagers and twenty-somethings - in 100 degree heat with $4 bottled water and $12 dollar slices of pizza (IN 1999!) as their only nourishment with a bunch of metal and gangsta rap acts performing getting them all hyped up in their malnourished, over heated and no doubt high and drunk as fuck states is going to lead to trouble anyway about it.

DJ on the local alt-rock station was talking about how he attended Woodstock '99 and on the final day of the festival, some enterprising local bottled a bunch of tap water and sold it at the Festival for $10 a gallon.

I always maintain that the Summer of '99 was the low point for mainstream pop culture. This, Phantom Menace, pro wrestling experiencing its greatest popularity (despite all three major promotions sucking during this period).

You're right. Damn, who the hell am I thinking of?

Also, I remember Fox aired a one hour special about Woodstock '99 compiling the best performances. 13-year-old me getting to hear some of the Offspring's set= 8)

The GOTJ is mostly seen as kind of a punchline to most people. Like, it happens once a year, has a bunch of shitty horrorcore rappers (as well as rappers and musical acts who at one time were sorta popular) and when it's over, everyone forgets it exists until next year. Woodstock 99 was essentially the absolute naidr of 90's pop culture on a number of levels.

I think I said this in the "worst decade for music" thread, but I've long thought that 98-03 is when mainstream pop culture really took a turn for the worse. Like, there was bad shit before, but that is the era when the bad shit starts to really become noticable.

One of the more embarrassing aspects of my life is that there is this huge mental block for me from around 1991-2000 where I don't remember ANY music at all when it was contemporary. Everything from that period (sans Green Day and a few punk acts) I got 2001 onward from friends, cover bands, girlfriends, etc.. So I missed Woodstock 99 when it happened. Thanks for clarifying.

totally, but you kind of know you're going to get gouged on shit like bottled water and food if you've EVER been to a concert/festival/sporting event/movie theater/ANYTHING going in. I'm a p seasoned festival goer, and sporting eventer....and you bring what you need to sustain you. You're CAMPING FOR 3-4 DAYS there. Bring gallons of water. Bring your own food. Did you remember to bring a tent? lol. It's gonna be hot as balls, maybe prepare for that too, check the weather channel.

It basically just comes down to dumb people being awful and dumb

I watched this via the Black Box too and thought it was nuts. the crowd tearing apart shit to use the plywood to crowd surf, fights breaking out everywhere, fires, ICP breaking atable during their act, all that shit. It was funny because when I watched an interview before the ppv started they were asking people who they were most excited to see and the overwhelming answer was Bush. That was no Bush crowd.

IIRC, there were a lot of restrictions against bringing in food and water at Woodstock '99.

Did a google search on food/water seizures for woodstock 99 because I remember hearing about that and http://academic.evergreen.edu/curricular/ageofirony/aoizine/heather.html this article says they weren't allowed to bring in their own water. And there was some comments on a different article that said people were searched and had food taken.

Once the festival actually began, it was wrought with problem after problem. The organizers realized there were many issues they failed to address or consider. For one, that weekend was unbearably hot, and there was no place from attendees to rest in the shade. On top of that, the crowd was not allowed to bring in water. Once inside the attendees realized that concessions were very highly priced with water bottles at $4 and food double that. As the weekend progressed, the attendees became more and more tired. All day they were forced to walk long distances around the venue in a muddy mess. Although this time it wasn’t rain that caused the mud. Leaky sinks and toilets created a soggy lagoon of human excrement that ultimately made the "air pungent and the mud toxic." Pair that with the heat and discomfort was sure to be felt by all.

so they basically created a living hell on earth of a festival. awesome. telling people, "WATER IS FREE" and halving the price of the food might have solved a lot of the problems. Also, they should have had "rain tents" and large shaded areas set up for people getting overheated. They also should have had some experienced people in medical/come down tents for people who were like OD'ing and shit

having been to some massive Phish and "hippie fests" this stuff was standard, and they didn't frisk you down totally going in. Nobody had problems sneaking massive quantities of drugs into Woodstock '99, it's not that hard to get water or food in too if you know what the fuck you're doing. It's not that hard to "hide" several gallons of water and foodstuff in your car

but yeah, being total Nazis about bringing food and water to an outdoor/camping weekend musical festival is lame as fuck

the port-a-potty situation.....eh, you just kind of deal with that, there's no way around it. I used to have the reflexive ability to hold my shit in for 2 or 3 days (opiates may have helped), and pee outside whenever possible. Port-a-pottys at those types of things are RANCID beyond imagination. I remember one time I had to use one and just held my nose while I was looking at a used condom and nasty dookie and vomit and piss sprayed all over everything. F'n nasty

There's at least three or four acts at every GOTJ that I'd love to see live. That's 3 or 4 more than at most festival lineups.

There's also a half dozen completely horrible bands but hey, where else in 2014 would I see Digital Underground? I have no shame in admitting I'd love to see those guys.

Also Yelawolf's one of the headliners there this year. Poor BZ. :(

The way MTV acted after the whole thing was...something. Like, they really played up how it was this big thing, and even had people openly brag about all kinds of debauchery and whatnot-then it turns out there are a bunch of rapes going on, and MTV barely even recognizes it. They only seemed to make a big deal about that after the event, and ultimately took little if any actual responsibility. By the time there were "Best of Woodstock 99" CD's and that Fox special, I just thought "Why would you continue to look at this event like it was a good thing?"

The GOTJ usually manages to pick up one or two people every year that makes you wonder "What are they doing here?" Like, Hannibal Burress has done stand up there.

I remember Limp Bizkit's video for "Rearranged" was about them being sentenced to death for causing every bad thing that happened at Woodstock '99. That transitioned into the "N 2 Gether Now" music video with Method Man.

I also remember Adrock from the Beastie Boys making a speech at the VMAs that year telling concert promoters to perhaps be more responsible. According to Adrock's wife, Kathleen Hanna, all the artists in the building gave him dirty looks after the speech.

Ad-Rock rules and doesn't give a fuck about those posers

of all the concerts I've been to, the Beastie Boys created one of the most crowd friendly and awesome environments. I wish I'd seen them live more than once

I flat out refuse, RE-FUSE, to use port-a-potties. I will hold my piss and shit in for hours just so I can avoid using them. They are the most heinous, foul smelling things around. I can't even fathom how hard it must be for women to use them. Guys? Yeah, you can just look up, hold your nose and pray for the best but women? Jeez...
