Lap top abruptly stopped playing all sound

I fell asleep listening to pod casts on my Dell lap top. When I woke up the CPU was turned off and when I started it back up the lap top played no sound effects and the pod casts are silent as well. The trouble shooter says my sound driver is ok. I can't get the CPU to system restore yet- 3 times it came up not restored so far. I also tried plugging and unplugging an external speaker just for a test. Any other ideas?

Well I got the blue screen of death and then the CPU unfucked itself. No need to reply
