The thing with Star Wars is they definitely have flaws, and they definitely have really good points. But what they have for a lot of people is nostalgia, and that's unbeatable.
It's not just people my age (28) who grew up with them, either. My dad still recalls the Star Destroyer flyover, and how the theater got dead quiet, people had never seen anything like it. The only shot I can think to compare it to is when the camera zooms out on the field of the wounded in Gone With the Wind, people just didn't know a movie could do that back then.
I didn't think Gladiator was all that. It was definitely good, don't get me wrong. It had some great scenes, visually, and a couple good lines. But it's about as deep as a puddle.
You know what? Psycho is way overrated. Again, not a bad movie. But Hitchcock had many better films. Vertigo, The Birds, Rear Window are all significantly better.
