That was an annoying stretch where Kobe was trying to score 50 in every game.

Alex English will go down as one of the most under appreciated players of all time

Kobe had to score 50 a game, to keep the Lakers in the playoff hunt. That 06-07 Laker team would have been a lottery team if Kobe didn't drag a Lakers team that included the likes of Smush Parker, Kwame Brown and Brian Cook.

Check my facebook.

And it's not one of these second guesses either. I admit, I wanted Gerald Green in a prior draft. But I definitely wanted Brandon Jennings (after Rubio and Curry were selected).

Jordan Hill be good.

Jordan Hill might be good. We have no idea because Mike D'Antoni won't fucking play him. I wanted Jennings too. I don't see any reason why we wouldn't pick a point guard (the team's biggest need) in a draft where point guards were in abundance. Fuck, we could have traded down and got Ty Lawson. Toney Douglas seems to be pretty competent though so I guess it didn't work out too badly. I just don't see any reason for Chris Duhon and Jared Jeffries to get significant minutes.

What was the Lakers record over that one stretch of Kobe 50 point games? I seem to recall them losing some of them.

If Brandon Jennings won't put asses in the seats at the Bradley Center, nothing will. I now have a reason to buy tickets to the Blazers-Bucks game.

The Bucks are actually good now.

Toney Douglas is a good player who defends and shoots well, but he's not a PG. It's funny how bad Duhon is. If you're not a Knick fan.

Here's a list of players who had 50 point games in losing efforts, since 1986.

The Lakers' record when Kobe Bryant scores 50 points is 17-7.

basketball-reference.com is a great website.

I'm a little surprised Magic didn't score 50 even once. I know he has been in the low-to-mid 40s several times in his career, but oh well.

And yeah, Kobe had to score that much in order to keep the Lakers in the playoff hunt. I thought it was annoying myself at the time until that was explained to me, and then I watched a Laker game during that stretch. Perhaps it would have been better for the Lakers to enter the lottery, but Kobe was having none of that idea, I am sure.

I remember being annoyed too when Mr. Clean and Wholesome David Robinson and the Spurs went way out of their way to make sure he got the scoring title.

That's a surprise too, that it wasn't until last year that Wade got his first 50 point game. To quote Vic the Brick, who knew???!

Talk about a record that will never, ever, EVER be broken... Wilt scoring 50 or more 106 times throughout his career... wow.

Though I can probably figure it out when I am fully awake, Leo, why do you think that Stern is a moron in this context?

I was thinking that Tony Delk was the most random 50 point performance ever, then I look down the list and see WILLIE F'N BURTON?!?!

Of the random guys who've only done it once I remember most of them, I remember Dana Barros and Chris Anderson, I remember Tracy Murray and Cliff Robinson, I remember the Shareef game, I do NOT remember Willie Burton dropping 50 points. How the fuck did that even happen, lol!?

I remember watching the Tony Delk game. He was on fire that night - 20 for 27 shooting. It was against the Kings when the Kings were good too.

On the hoops forum I post at, we named an "award" after him for that game.

Probably not, unless you had PBP from the games in front of you. I'd assume most of the ones in the low 50's were.

Speaking of OT, Andre Miller goes for 52 in Dallas in OT. Looking through the list, he's probably the oldest player to score his first 50.

I was just searching for a little more info on that Willie Burton game, and found this list

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2651623/the_nbas_15_most_shocking_50point_scorers.html?cat=49

Welsey is perhaps better known for being part of the Kareem-Abdul Jabbar trade from the Bucks to the Lakers. At least, that's how I recognized the name.

I wouldn't have put Jermaine O'Neal on this list either, as he was just coming off a season where he was considered an MVP candidate and was an elite player for much of the decade. The 14.2 career average is also adversely affected by the years in Portland where he didn't get much burn. I'd consider someone like Dana Barros or Cedric Ceballos going for 50 much more shocking. (EDIT: Oh hey, Ceballos is on the list just ahead of him. Shows how much I pay attention.)

I do know Burton played for the Heat before this performance against them as a 76er, so maybe it was just one of those "I'll show you for getting rid of me" things. But still, Willie Burton.

Also, I'm working on a thread like this for triple-doubles, as well. It only goes back to the 86-87 season, as that's as far back as basketball-reference keeps boxscores. So far, I've noticed that Fat Lever looks to be a tremendously underrated player in NBA lore. He was keeping pace with Magic in triple-doubles for a few years, no shit.

I still don't understand how Andre Miller could score over 30 points in a game. It's like he challenged the opposition to an uncontested mid range contest.

Andre's really good at driving the lane and getting points in the paint as well. Severely underrated player offensively, his three point percentage notwithstanding.

Also BZ you'll be pleased to know that the ONLY three pointer he's made this year was that one against the Knicks which helped the Blazers' comeback. He's currently 1 for 15 on the year. lol

From what I understand, the 80s Nuggets were sort of like the modern day Suns or Warriors so it's likely Fat Lever had some inflated stats there due to the offense they played.

I have nothing against him. I think he's a solid player. I just can't imagine scoring that many points not because he sucks but he doesn't seem to be that type of player.

He totally is, especially in the Blazers' offense. His job is essentially to drive the lane if there's no one to dish it to outside or if LaMarcus is double covered, If you look at his assist totals, they've gone way down since his earlier days but his average ppg has always been in the mid-teens or so. Not flashy and doesn't get a ton of assists, but he scores (inside) when called upon and also plays the break really well. He'd be great on a team like the Suns or Mavs that have a ton of outside shooting threats.

Can't disagree with you at all about that particular game, though. He pretty much had to score 52 because they didn't have Roy, Batum, or Rudy available in that game and Dallas had been throwing 2 or 3 guys at Aldridge (who sometimes crumbles under pressure from just one solid big like Luis Scola) so he took the load on and did what Roy usually does in that game.

I remember the highlights to the Willie Burton game.

Then I remember him in the CBA averaging like 30pts and 16 rebounds a game and basically begging for another chance in the NBA.

Ripper- Used to watch CBA games.

I went to a CBA game in '96'/'97ish and Manute Bol was playing on the opposing team. They had to cancel the game five minutes in because the arena crew did such a shitty job of changing over from an ice rink to the basketball court and the floor was really fucking slippery as a result. Manute sat on the whole time too so I didn't get the benefit of seeing him slide around the floor.
