May marks the 5th year that HD/Next Gen gaming has been around, and given the usual time scale between generations, are we due some new consoles next year or perhaps 2012?

Somehow i dont think so, Nintendo excluded, both the main parties appear to be trying to one up each other with peripherals rather than hardware, aka Natal vs Ps3 Motion Controller.

Are they scared to commit the money and resources to a new console only for Ninty to beat them all with a previous generation console with some funky controls?

Anyways, the reason behind this thread is im replaying MGS4 and wondered what you would pick to be the game that has demonstrated the graphical prowess and made the most that the current gen hardware has to offer.

We're still pretty early in the life cycle of this current generation of consoles.. and they've not been pushed to their max limits yet... I'm betting you won't see any new consoles from Sony or MS until 2015 at the earliest.

May marks the 5th year? I swear 360 was the first one out by a good year and it didn't come out until around November.

From what I understand no one is really even thinking about the next console (at least not about launching it, I'm sure they've already put some work in) at this point, which means we're a few years out at minimum.

Xbox 360 was released in 2005, it officially got reveled in May causing the hype.

I finally got a 360. I hope it's at least a few more years before the next best thing comes along.

The PS3 and 360 don't feel outdated and these manufacturers end up losing money with each launch so we shouldn't be seeing anything new for awhile.

Yeah I believe there have only really been a few games released thus far that even really churn these machines for all their worth.

To be fair, working on and releasing a new console now would be beyond stupid, considering how the economy is doing and all. I'd hope we wouldn't see anything for at least another 2-3 years minimum.

Dear god. I haven't even upgraded from PS2 yet.

Don't you only play baseball games, though? Then again, you're missing out on the glory of online leagues.

I doubt it, for the aforementioned reasons. Hell, I still have to upgrade from my PS2 as well, *and* get a decent HDTV and sound system, because it makes no sense to get a PS3 and still run it off of a six-year old 27" SDTV.

That's exactly where I'm at. For the most part, I'm a light gamer, just content to playing basketball games and Fire Pro.

I bought a PS3 about 2 years ago. It was the first time I had a current gen gaming console since I had a SNES.

Move and Natal will be the boost to the current gen to keep it 'fresh' for a few more years, but you won't see a new generation platform for a few more years yet.

The PS3 will also supposedly be getting an update later this year that will allow it to run 3D Bluray discs (you'll still need a 3D capable TV). So the full potential of the system still hasn't been realized.

I wonder if Nintendo will consider an updated Wii in the future with HD and Dolby Digital capability. The Wii's graphics and sound are pretty laughable by 2010 standards.

This should give you folks an idea of when the next systems will come out.

1983 - NES
1988 - Genesis
1990 - SNES
1994 - PlayStation and Saturn
1996 - Nintendo 64
2000 - PlayStation 2
2001 - Gamecube and Xbox
2005 - Xbox 360
2006 - PlayStation and Wii

Going by the above, I would say I wouldn't be surprised if a new one is in the process of beeing made. 4-5 years seems to be the lifespan of some of these systems, so someone's going to bring something out.

Nintendo's already made a slight goof with an image they say they hoisted from somewhere else for Wii 2, so it might be possibly they are already in the works of one. They can at least point to Capcom fucking up their image hoisting and play "we screwed up".

Currently, Sony and Microsoft's profit margins are pretty laughable by Nintendo's standards.

"Wii HD" is highly unlikely, IMO. It's slightly more likely than the "Sony shall rahze a-gin!!" scenario that the analysts are also spouting year after year, but FFS, we haven't even gotten non-white Wiis in the US yet.

There will always be R&D for new hardware for console manufacturers, but leaks of them don't indicate that a finished product is anywhere near release.

Nintendo didn't make that error, it was Nintendo Power (which isn't published by Nintendo anymore) which took a Photoshopped picture of a Wii Remote with a small "2" next to the Wii logo off of the internet and didn't notice it before they printed it.

I can remember reading something claiming that part of the effect of the decline of PC gaming is that the hardware side of the business isn't being pushed as much as it used to. So it's possible the usual 5-year-ish lifespan wouldn't bring about as much of a difference in power as we're used to, anyhow. I imagine the rise of, and focus on less-powerful machines like cell phones and netbooks would probably contribute as well. On the plus side, maybe that means whenever we see a new DS or PSP, they'll be all the more impressive for a portable machine.

Well folks, someone, I forget who, read the full story on Kotaku, managed to pluck out some nice information about the new console.

Its a new DS. The dual screen when flipped open is going to be able have both screens nearly right beside each other so that the break between the two is not noticable. The design will look different, but still retain the feel of a DS. The screens will also be larger than the DSi, not sure though if it'll be as big as DSXL. The games are already in development, and suggest a late 2010 release.

The reason I say console? It's going to be as powerful as the Gamecube. Now that's going to be awesome.

They just fucking released the DSi less than a year ago, and they're releasing an "improved" version on March 28th as it is. Now you're telling me that a 5th version of the DS is coming out this year? Way to fuck over your customers, Nintendo.

That is a STUPID amount of updates to a handheld which didnt need updating from the DS lite.

But then look at how many revisions where made to the original Game boy.

Honestly even I'm agreeing the DS getting that many updates is nice. But I don't think we'll see the system till 2011, probably 2012 if I was guessing. It just seems like overkill after you release the DSXL.

This is a good point right here. When PC gaming was big, it drove a lot of R&D in the hardware are (nVidia, ATI, etc), as well as quick advancements in game engine tech.

Sounds about right. Despite the Wii being successful in its own right, the DS still destroys it in Japan. In general, Japan (Nintendo's core market, don't forget) portable and mobile games are far more widely played than consoles--even if it is by more "casual" gamers.

Option A)

Nintendos new console

It involves a matrix style port being drilled into your brain, where the interface boots you actually into the game.

Option B)

They make star trek holodecks a reality.
