ALS is up there with illnesses I wish science could hurry up and stop/cure. Mongo's ALS could probably be worsened by the hits he took in both the NFL and the WCW. Living in the New Orleans area, we have a local sports hero that has ALS, Steve Gleason, and had he not been diagnosed, I'd know very little about it outside of Gehrig and Hawking had it. I know the Gleason foundation does a lot of research but I don't know that they've made any headway on cause, prevention, or cure (though repeated blows to the head do not help).

Sad to see this about Mongo. Dude's personality was always vibrant. I remember feeling like he'd be a fun guy to be around based on what I saw of his wrestling career. I liked him well enough, a that age "work rate" didn't matter to me, I was just looking for entertainment, and he delivered.

Hoping for the best with him.

I'm surprised they didn't write a deeper HOF speech than the 60 seconds one his sister read. They said Mongo helped write it before he lost his voice, but it was bare bones. He didn't even mention his other NFL team he finished his career with.
Obviously he wasn't going to tell a bunch of locker room stories in this state, but they didn't even drop Vince Tobin, Buddy Ryan, etc as coaches who helped him excel. IIRC Ditka wasn't mentioned, and his Texas career was only implied by the closing remark.

My cousin the Bears fan was put off by Misty doing the "cheer leader routine" Friday night (his words), but I took it as her trying to show the charisma and fun Mongo was all about.

Steve Gleason was just on the Espys wasn't he? I'm sure there are different levels of how hard the ALS hits, but he traveled and had a voice box computer gimmick to speak with. Mongo announced in June that the medical issues wouldn't let him travel.

My best friend's dad developed ALS but he died of a heart attack only weeks afterward. His son said it was ALS related and not just age/weight whatever. That's my only personal connection to this disease.

It's because he was younger. He's also worse off than he looks.

Somehow his wife's been taking care of him for 13 years. I dunno how.
