We all know people that think they're going to strike it big as musicians then spend the next X amount of years only playing random local gigs hoping to strike it big. Friend of mine is a "professional musician" and gigs are his only source of income. He has the fortune of living in the NOLA area and therefore has a built in culture for music. He's finally at a point where several of his projects can garner him $300 per night. I remember nights where he'd share the ticket with three other bands at dive bars and have to split $39 (after they paid the door girl, sound guy, and light guy from the cover revenue) between three bands.
Anyway one of the bands he is in just released a professionally done music video (not a Windows Movie Maker project). He's the guitarist & not the featured person, but this band is a lot of fun. They have a lot of energy in their shows. For some reason their stuff isn't on Itunes right now but they still have an active myspace account to listen to other tracks (http://www.myspace.com/sicklikesinatra) :
Sick like Sinatra - Electric Girlfriend
My friend on the other hand has his own act's stuff on Itunes. Well one of his releases anyway. His name is Jak Locke. He spent four years in college, got the piece of paper, and realized there isn't much shit you can do with a degree in the Arts & Sciences so he set out to make his living in music. He's taken his band on trips to random states to do shows and whenever he releases a CD I buy ten of them and try to mail them to people all over to spread his work. He's a great guy and he will help any act get a gig in New Orleans because he knows what it's like to take home $4 or nothing at all. He still hasn't "made it" in the sense of radio play but he does get local press, radio, etc... He self records all parts in his home then teaches the rest of the band what is expected of them (pretty sure Reznor does this as well, correct me if I am wrong). He also has a published book (Frogg Dell's Junkyard), a video game, and various youtube video skits that aren't music related. He just completed a fundraising campaign via indiegogo to film a real Western era movie and I guess he's going to start filming very soon.
Some of his youtube videos:
Good Luck (done by his friend who is a professional film maker but they did it on the cheap with just the two of them)
Jak Locke - Good Luck
And here are some that he just did with his friends and a Best Buy purchased Sony video camera:
Beautiful Day to Be Dead (featuring pseudo suicides of various friends) Jak Locke - Beautiful Day To Be Dead
Thrift Store Reject (not one of MY favorites but he's proud as shit of this song. I think it's one of his earlier "hits" )
Jak Locke - Thrift Store Reject
Upstream Downstream (He put this video together in maybe 3 hours while we were chatting one night. He was just using random video footage friends provided at various stages): Jak Locke - Upstream Downstream
Molotov Cocktail Jak Locke - Molotov Cocktail
For some reason, some are embedding, others aren't. Either way, share some of the music in your area that you feel isn't getting the recognition you think it deserves.
