One of my favorite bands with a great album in Dummy (1994), a really good follow-up in 1997, and an underrated gem released in 2008 (Third). Thoughts? Overrated? Underrated?

They trended towards atmospheric moods a lot but damn if they didn't usually pull it off.

Dummy is basically the best thing ever, the self-titled is less consistent but still good, and Third is all right, too. Dummy is so, so good, though, that I never listen to the other two albums.

They had that rad song from that movie The Craft. Scorned, was it called?

I've been meaning to download Dummy's for a while now, and just keep on forgetting about it. Thanks for the reminder.

Minority opinion here, but I don't think Dummy has aged all that well. I like the other two albums much better, though admittedly this is based on my distaste for a few of the superficial signifiers of trip hop. Still though, I think the second album in particular gets way shafted.

Well I never thought I'd see a Portishead thread on here, but Dummy is awesome. Of course Glory Box is fucking incredible.

Before I opened this thread, I thought "I don't think I've ever heard any Portishead," but then I listened to the first song posted and realized I heard it forever ago on Matt Pinfield's 120 Minutes. It's pretty good.

I'm in the minority, but I tend to think their third album is their best. It essentially goes away from the established sound and makes something more complex, and I love it so.

The irony is it's just a re-worked version of "Glory Box" too.
