Fucking shit dude. 62 years old. Way too young.
They were supposed to go longer and had a big match planned out but the event ran long and they had to shorten it significantly. They had an even better match in 1990 on Main Event that may be Bobby's best singles match.Clash of the Champions XV is not a very good show, but Beautiful Bobby and Ric Flair save it from being a complete waste of time with a killer two out of three falls main event match. I've always remembered it because of Eaton's efforts as the plucky babyface challenger who comes up short. Just rewatched it; it still holds up as a good TV main event.
I loved to hate the Midnight Express whenever they dispatched the Mulkeys or another pair of jobbers on NWA World Wide Wrestling back in the day. Bobby executed a good top rope kneedrop. His Alabama Jam set the standard for top rope legdrops too, at least for me. He also had a pretty sweet mullet that he kept well after the hairstyle went out of vogue. Bobby Eaton made pro wrestling look easy, kinda like how Arn Anderson and Cowboy Bob Orton did in their day. One of the best.
Definitely a great match. Just watched it on YouTube after seeing your post. Although I did enjoy babyface Beautiful Bobby, this match does better playing to his strengths. Fiery babyface Ric Flair is also a sight worth seeing. Can't remember if I saw this one on TV or not, but I did watch Main Event pretty regularly at the time. Best Eaton singles performance? Sure, I won't argue against that. They were supposed to go longer and had a big match planned out but the event ran long and they had to shorten it significantly.
