Ukraine's parliament has called on the United States and Britain to uphold a pact signed with Russia to guarantee its sovereignty as tensions spiralled over the Crimea region.

Interim leader Oleksandr Turchynov also told MPs that he was summoning the country's security and defence chiefs over the crisis.

Legislators voted to demand guarantees of a 1994 memorandum that Ukraine signed with the Britain, Russia and the United States in Budapest safeguarding its borders and independence in return for giving up any nuclear arsenals left in the country after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Ukraine's interior minister on Friday accused Russian forces of staging an "armed invasion" in Crimea, claiming they had blocked one air base and entered another airport overnight on the Black Sea peninsula.

The alleged raids - denied by Russian officials - came a day after pro-Russian gunmen seized control of Crimea's regional parliament and government building and local MPs voted to hold a referendum on May 25 to expand the region's autonomy from Kiev and replaced the local government with a pro-Moscow official.

The growing tensions follow the removal of Kremlin-allied Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych last weekend in an avalanche of change following the deaths of scores of people in clashes in Kiev.

Shit son.

Relations between the two countries have been strained since Viktor Yanukovych was ousted as Ukrainian president last week.

Mr Yanukovych is now in Russia and expected to hold a news conference later in the city of Rostov-on-Don, near the Ukrainian border.

He disappeared after leaving office but resurfaced in Russia on Thursday, asserting that he is still Ukraine's lawful president.

Ukraine's general prosecutor has said he will ask Russia to extradite Mr Yanukovych, if it is confirmed that he is still there.

In other developments:

The BBC has seen eight trucks with the black plates of the Russian army moving towards Simferopol
Unconfirmed reports say eight Russian military helicopters have arrived in Sevastopol
Ukraine's central bank has put a 15,000 hryvnia (1,000 euro; £820) limit on daily cash withdrawals
Armed Forces chief Yuriy Ilyin, appointed earlier this month by Mr Yanukovych, is sacked
Ukraine's parliament calls on the UN Security Council to discuss the unfolding crisis in Crimea

Putin is definitely raising the stakes big time right now. I don't know think he's going to go all the way to war but I could be wrong. He's going to push it as far as he can though until he's forced to back down.

Putin is one of those leaders who legit worries me. He seems to be one of those his ideals and his rule is all that matters guys. Those are the guys who usually end up starting pretty major wars.

Emergency meeting of UN Security Council at 2pm Eastern.

Russian Parliament has given it's approval of Putin sending troops in and also reccomended recalling the Russian Ambassador from the US http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_UKRAINE?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2014-03-01-08-55-37

Putin's motion loosely refers to the "territory of Ukraine" rather than specifically to Crimea, raising the possibility that Moscow could use military force in other Russian-speaking areas in eastern and southern Ukraine, where many oppose the new authorities in Kiev. Pro-Russian protests were reported in the eastern cities of Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk and the southern port of Odessa.

I have to laugh at all these "Sarah Palin was right!" articles. Yes, I'm sure Sarah Palin was coming up w/ her public foreign policy statements.

This has to be the easiest war to sell to both sides if it comes down to that point... the right can be sold into war with Russia because THEY USED TO BE COMMIES... and you can easily sell it to the left because Putin is HITLER TO THE GAYS.

IT COVERS ALL THE BASES. PUTIN GONNA UNIFY THE COUNTRY.

Some good updates coming in on there. NATO is meeting today and I'm willing to bet that Turkey and Poland are going to be especially concerned and pushing for a hard line.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/03/03/uk-ukraine-crisis-ultimatum-idUKBREA221AI20140303

(Reuters) - Russia's Black Sea Fleet has told Ukrainian forces in Crimea to surrender by 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Tuesday or face a military assault, Interfax news agency quoted a source in the Ukrainian Defence Ministry as saying.

The ultimatum, Interfax said, was issued by Alexander Vitko, the fleet's commander.

The ministry did not immediately confirm the report and there was no immediate comment by the Black Sea Fleet, which has a base in Crimea, where Russian forces are in control.

"If they do not surrender before 5 a.m. tomorrow, a real assault will be started against units and divisions of the armed forces across Crimea," the agency quoted the ministry source as saying.

Here we go.

Are the Russians that blind, stupid, and greedy? Do they seriously think that the rest of the world will just sit back and watch Russia invade yet another country... hey, that's actually cutting my own point's throat. They've done this SO MANY TIMES and mostly gotten away with it, because nobody wants to piss off Russia because it's impossible to fight a war against Russia, and thus the standard procedure of appeasement continues. Chechnya, Georgia, Ukraine; is Russia just not gonna be happy until it manifest-destiny's itself back into the USSR? And this ain't a hawkish cry for Western intervention; it's just fucking amazing to me that NOW, right after the freaking Olympics just wrapped up not too far from the crisis, Russia is invading yet another sovereign nation and we all just sit around threatening Or Else as our best weapon. Do we sit and do nothing in the face of this Stalinist warmongering bullshit? But, considering where we are and what condition we're in, are we even close to being prepared to handle this situation with force?

This one is a lot bigger than the other invasions and more likely to result in serious consequences for everyone. America (and The UK and Russia) have a treaty with the Ukraine that basically guaranteed their borders in exchange for giving up their nukes at the end of the Cold War. The UK and US are required to come to their aid not that they will for sure.

The g8 summit has been canceled because the other nations pulled out and they're talking about kicking Russia out which is a lot more than they've done before. There could be some real economic consequences for Russia at the least. The question is if that will be enough. Putin did this out of desperation and the only way to end this without people getting killed (more people anyway) is to give him a facesaving way out. Right now I think its going to end with the Russians keeping the Crimea as a puppet state and letting Ukraine join the EU in exchange.

Ed Pilkington reports from the emergency UN security council meeting that Vitaly Churkin, the Russian diplomatic representative at the UN, has just shown the other members of the council what he claimed was a letter from Viktor Yanukovich, the ousted president of Ukraine who is now in exile in Russia.

In the letter, the former leader of the troubled country calls on the Russian president Vladimir Putin to use his military to invade parts of Ukraine. Churkin reads:

“As the legitimate elected representative, I say the events in Kiev have resulted in Ukraine being on the brink of civil war. The rights of people in Crimea are being threatened. Under the influence of Western countries, there are open acts of terror. I would call on the president of Russia, Mr Putin, to use the armed forces of the Russian Federation to establish peace and defend the people of Ukraine.”

Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the UN, has just taken the floor with this acerbic riposte: “So many of the assertions made this afternoon are without basis in reality”.

Groundwork for further intervention is getting laid
