ABC officially confirmed today what has been speculated for months. A revival of the hit blue-collar family sitcom Roseanne has been greenlighted at ABC. The eight-episode reboot, which Deadline first reported exclusively, will feature the original cast – Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Michael Fishman (D.J.) and Lecy Goranson (Becky). It’s slated to premiere in 2018. Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear in another role.

I can't see this being anything but terrible, but I'm definitely gonna watch the first few episodes.

I never watched Roseanne but I thought I had heard John Goodman's character died at the end. Am I wrong or are they resurrecting him?

I was hoping he would be a ghostly visage ala James Remar on Dexter, but Roseanne is basically retconning the finale.

Hopefully like Sarah Chalke he is a new character and his character is the same from 10 Cloverfield Lane

Speaking of dead, the actor that played one of Roseanne's sons in-law is dead, and the other is the lead on another hit sitcom; how do you imagine that they're going to address that?

I liked Roseanne well enough as a show but it being on ABC and just an 8 episode run sounds bad. I do have to admit to being impressed how much of the original cast they got back though.

Sadly yes (also a relative of mine, sigh, my only claim to fame). I wonder if they'll write him out of the script (via death or other means) or just ignore the character..

Also, re: Dan being dead. Wasn't a good chunk of that final season a dream or something? I stopped paying attention after they bought a restaurant to serve "loose meat" sandwiches.. O_O

What's wrong with ABC?

Commercials and censorship. I'm not saying turn the show into a curse fest, but like...if someone is coming back from faking their death, it just seems odd to me.

Ah. This is still a "wait and see" situation for me. I liked the first few seasons well enough before everything became ridiculous so I'll at least check it out.

The dream was them winning the lottery and the adventures they had being rich. Roseanne was writing stories to keep her mind off of Dan's death.

This is probably going to be very shit.

Yes the final season was a book Roseanne was writing to cope with Dan's death of an heart attack. She changed the story to make Dan cheat on her as a way of feeling anger that he's gone. Also Jackie's gay and Darlene is with Mark and Becky is with David.

Yeah, that final season was bullshit.

hopefully they incorporate her politics into the show. I'd watch John Goodman tear into some Berniebro socialist SCUM

Wait. I thought the whole show was a book.

Her mom came out as gay before the final season and the Becky/Mark and Darlene/David pairings happened throughout the show.

She revealed that all that Jackie was gay and Becky was actually with David and Darlene was with Mark in a monologue in the final episode. She changed it for her book.

The book is the show though, I mixed that part up.

When asked about to handle Mark's death, Roseanne said they were just gonna kill the character off after he joined the military and that Becky would just be a widow working at a Wal-Mart.

David will probably make a cameo but will be off teaching art at a community college or something because nothing good happens to people in that family.

As for Dan, they'll claim he faked his death which is absurd that Dan would even be competent enough to manage that for so long.

I always felt Roseanne was one of the best sitcoms at it's peak but I worry Roseanne intensified political beliefs will make this harder to enjoy.

At least ABC managed to replace an extreme right wing nutcase 90s sitcom icon with an extreme left wing nutcase 90s sitcom icon.

Also anyone who knocks a loose meat sandwich never had one. One of the only positives of the rural Midwest.

The final season was Roseanne just acting out her life fantasies and her anger at the Network. The Conners becoming rich was supposed to emulate her life wealth. Also she was mad at ABC for turning down an "Absulutely Fabulous" American reboot she pitched that was supposed to star Carrie Fisher. Hence all the "Ab Fab" plot lines of luxury, high class and the like.

I'm trying to rememember stuff off the top of my head 20 years later, so Bev wasn't really gay but Jackie was? And Roseanne's father being a pedophile was never mentioned again after his death iirc (despite his character previously being a sweet old man type that Roseanne and .Jackie idolized). Man it was weird

Yes in the final episode during Roseanne's pretentious voice over she says:

"My sister in real life, unlike my mother, is gay. She always told me she was gay, but for some reason I always pictured her with a man."

I know it was revealed in the last episode.

What I'm saying is that she reveals in the last episode that Jackie is gay and not her mother. Okay. People say that the last season is all part of the book. What I'm saying is that the entire show is part of the book since a lot of the stuff she revealed is different happened much earlier than the last season.

Or is that what you're saying too?

Her dad was a pedophile? Man I really don't remember that. I just remember that he seemed like a funny and nice old man early on and then later this plot comes out of left field that he used to beat Roseanne and Jackie.

I thought they also implied sexual abuse in the funeral episode but I haven't seen it in years. Pretty sure Roseanne was sexually abused as a child in real life

I remember reading a long time ago in some gossip column that the main reason why they did the lottery storyline was that Roseanne wanted to wear nice clothes on her show. Also, after ABC canceled the series Roseanne wanted to star in a spinoff where she would move to Vegas and live with a black comedian named Simply Mahvelous but it didn't get picked up. :(

Her views aren't coherent enough to be threatening I guess. Plus she's still Jewish.
