I was thinking about how many people LOVE songs like The Police's "Every Breath You Take" (song about stalking) or Sarah McLachlan's "Possession" (another song about stalking) and it got me to thinking about what other songs are there where the message is pretty dark but most people either don't see it or just ignore it (usually for its "romance" or "love" theme)?

I mentioned two obvious ones above but there's also the REM classic "To the One I Love"

- My contribution: Dave Matthews Band - Crash Into Me. Sweet love song, right? Supposedly it's about a boy watching through his window at his neighbors as they have BDSM sex. Reading the lyrics, it's rather obvious.

Edited for the fuck up of titling The Police song wrong.

Since everyone's piled well enough on HQ for his song misnomer, I'll just say that my favorite song in this category will always be "Born in the USA", which amuses me when some people to this day still think it's a "rah rah yay America" song

One might think Frank Zappa's "I Promise Not To Come In Your Mouth" is about promising not to come in one's mouth. It's actually an instrumental that features delicate keyboards and guitars.

"Genius of Love" is basically about a loser of a woman, fresh from jail, who's longing for/obsessed with her former boyfriend who was fun to get fucked up with.

"Semi-Chamred Life" by Third Eye Blind. Everybody who jammed along to this catchy, kid friendly tune had no idea it was really about taking drugs and fucking hookers.

My all-time favorite misdirected message song. The "doo-doo-doo" part throws everyone off and they never listen to the lyrics.

How could someone miss the "I took the hit that I was given, then I bumped again, then I bumped again" line?

Or the part where it says "DOING CRYSTAL METH".

It's been a personal goal of mine to write music similar to "Semi-Charmed Life". Upbeat, catchy tunes with really fucked up messages.

I remember when I figured out REM's "The One I Love." I was working at a supermarket at the time and the song was blasting on the speakers. "...the one eye love and the one eye left behind..." lol.

I think they backmasked the "doing crystal meth" lyric on the radio, where most people hear the song.

That song where Juvenile encourages the people of New Orleans to invest their FEMA checks in cocaine.
