This is either going to be shockingly fun or the worst dogshit imaginable. There's no in between.

On one hand-some of the casting is lame (Andrew Schultz shouldn't be cast in anything). On the other hand, other choices ranging from "we'll see" (Vega for example) to inspired (Bison should absolutely be played by a beloved character actor), the action doesn't seem bad and Eric Andre not only is in it, but his dream has come true

If they lean into the over-the-topness of it all and its goofyish charm, I can see this being great but I'm a little worried they'll try to play it off as too straight/too serious.

...you saw the teaser with the neon lighting and game-accurate outfits and wire-fu stunts and you're worried they'll play it serious?
 
A bigger concern is that it'll be just so wacky and self aware
 
It's directed by a guy who has mostly directed Eric Andre projects, and Eric is in it. So, is Kyle Mooney. Maybe it will have a surreal comedy vibe, who knows. The cast is so bizarre that I'm much more excited for this than Mortal Kombat 2 with AARP Johnny Cage.

Absolutely. I don't trust big studios to not lean into the camp anymore since critics/people just can't have "fun" things be "fun" since everything has to be plot relevant, deep characters/depth in story arcs that are high stakes, etc and stuff that's silly or light or fun is usually immediately described as being "cringe" instead of camp. A lot of why the Sonic series works is because it can be serious/straight forward but has characters like Jim Carrey's Robotnik fully lean into the over-the-top camp/fun as a counterbalance.

The Mortal Kombat reboot/remake was this exact problem where it went away from the 90s camp and went too far into the serious/straight aspect within the plot and acting. Granted that wasn't helped by its casting/lead character choice either but I remember people creaming over the teaser/trailer because it just teased the characters in costumes and fight scenes.

Still getting Mortal Kombat-esque vibes with some of the dialogue and certain characters tbh. It does look like the fight scenes will be good though but I was kind of getting tonal whiplash like the trailer wasn't sure whether to market a deep lead character backstory or just lean into showing the fights and flash which has me a little concerned.
 
This somehow look awesome and like dogshit at the same time. I'm hoping both this and MK II are big hits and it leads to more fighting games being turned into movies. Give me a real Tekken movie and not either of those awful direct to dvd movies from the 2000's.
