Trump picks conservative judge Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court

President Donald Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch, a fast-rising conservative judge with a writer's flair, to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, setting up a fierce fight with Democrats over a jurist who could shape America's legal landscape for decades to come.

At 49, Gorsuch is the youngest Supreme Court nominee in a quarter-century. He's known on the Denver-based 10th Circuit Court of Appeals for clear, colloquial writing, advocacy for court review of government regulations, defense of religious freedom and skepticism toward law enforcement.

"Judge Gorsuch has outstanding legal skills, a brilliant mind, tremendous discipline and has earned bipartisan support," Trump declared, announcing the nomination in his first televised prime-time address from the White House.

Gorsuch's nomination was cheered by conservatives wary of Trump's own fluid ideology. If confirmed by the Senate, he will fill the seat left vacant by the death last year of Antonin Scalia, long the right's most powerful voice on the high court.

The Republicans look like such hypocrites when they wouldn't even hold confirmation hearings for Obama's nom when Scalia died all the way back in February of 2016. And guarantee if Clinton won and nominated someone as far to the left as Gorsuch is to the right they'd be doing the same thing. The goal should be to get moderate, unbiased judges.....not ideologues. Now obviously that seems pie in the sky, but if the senate wasn't so horribly partisan and gridlocked we could have people working across the aisle and compromising. This just sets horrible precedent and simply isn't good for democracy

Neil Gorsuch's first act as a Supreme Court judge was to expedite the execution of an intellectually disabled Arkansas man because the state's supply of lethal injection drugs was expiring. Forensic techniques used at the trial have largely been discredited; the man never got DNA testing that could have proven his innocence; the judge in the case was sleeping with one of the prosecutors and later married her; and, the man's defense attorney was so drunk in some of the hearings that the prosecution asked to drug test him. Neil Gorsuch wrote in his book that "[a]ll human beings are intrinsically valuable."

I watched several hours of this stuff live and my god is Washington bananas. Kavanaugh screaming at points during his hearing made him appear unhinged. Trump praising the victim as credible was amazing. The GOP bringing in a special guest sex crime interviewer because their whole panel was saggy scrotum white dudes, only to send her away for Brett's interview. Kavanaugh claiming to be a virgin choir boy while also having a yearbook full of drinking implications.

It's pretty wild that Mitch knew the accusers issue was a thing weeks ago and couldn't stop the crazy train from unfolding. They have to have 20 more nutters who could have eased into the Supreme Court without having this hoopala. They really couldn't get anyone else to say they'd protect Trump?

I'd still love to know who got to Lindsey Graham since he used to be anti-Trump. Is he really just a wilting stooge or did Russia or somebody else pay him off.
