The Minions really are a perfect kids' creation when you think about it...

#1: Great color scheme, easier to pick out in a crowd of characters
#2: Large, expressive eyes and an easy shape to follow. Incredibly unthreatening in concept.
#3: They aren't verbal or erudite so you don't have to worry about following the dialogue. Brains can fill in the gaps/easily follow the slapstick humor
#4: It's classic slapstick humor harkening back to Looney Tunes. I counted multiple previews before movies where adults chuckled/laughed at the on-screen antics.

Also, I'd add number 5...if you can sit through these films not under the influence of some greenery, kudos to you.

I actually checked out Minions 1 for the first time recently and....hey I'll admit it, I fucking enjoyed it. Granted, I was deep in a sativa haze.....but still. I thought the first one overextended into a totally mindless but funny flick.

Unfortunately, the sequel didn't bring much that the first film had, but there were moments. Ultimately though, it didn't entertain nearly as much as the first one did.

Can't really comment on any of the Despicable Me films, but considering the Minions films are (I think?) essentially prequels to the other ones in the franchise, I'm half ass considering watching them now, perhaps blunted.

Yep, it's summer, I have too much time on my hands, and I'm stretching for ideas!

I still think the 1st Despicable Me holds up pretty well. The 2nd is fine and the 3rd I can't really remember anything about tbh.

The only thing I know about Minions is that boomers liked to use them in memes on Facebook

I know it's "only" 260K, but Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still being in the Top 10 at the box office two weeks after hitting streaming has got to be seen as a win, right?

That's quite a drop for "Love and Thunder"

"Paws of Fury" was originally titled "Blazing Samurai", and has been taken off schedule and shuffled around a lot. Here's a history of that.

Paws of Fury looked dreadful, like a straight-to Disney+ bad animated flick so I was curious at what it'd open to. I didn't expect that low though!

I'm surprised there wasn't more boomer outrage over a family friendly, vaguely ethnic remake of Blazing Saddles but I guess that idea was so bad that nobody even noticed it

This is the first time in a while an A24 release hasn't released a horror film as a wide release in a while (or at least "Saint Maude" due to the pandemic). I actually wonder if it's due to "Men", which got more positive than negative reviews, but is the first wide release genre film from them from that didn't get overwhelming praise from critics, and actually got good to fair criticism in how it handled it's subject and themes (I for one was not a fan)

Can’t find the box office thread but yikes
August is historically up there with January and February for worst months for movie releases and is a dumping ground for filler. I'm surprised it's getting think pieces.

Hell @Gary hasn't even updated this thread in three weeks cause there's been so few notable new releases!

The top movie over the weekend was "The Invitation" (not the movie from the 2015-though I recommend that one) and the week before it was the new "Dragon Ball" movie (which took a bit of a tumble this week). The most notable bomb was George Miller's new movie "Three Thousand Years of Longing", which MGM didn't seem to promote outside of maybe social media ads. I had a feeling it wasn't going to set the world on fire-it probably would have done poorly even if it had come out 20 or 15 years ago-though at least then it likely would have gotten more promotion, even if it's a hard sell for major audiences.

I was mildly interested in Three Thousand Years of Longing. I figured it was a p. huge bomb cause I looked at screen times for this weekend and it's already down to only two showings at my local theater in its 2nd weekend. Top Gun: Maverick and the new Minions are getting more showings despite being out for months.

It definitely seems like a movie that would've done better on word of mouth than with a massive rollout.

I'm very very curious to see what box office looks like this weekend. Almost every movie theater is doing "National Movie Theaters Day" on Saturday and selling all tickets at $3 (including IMAX!), presumably an attempt to pack theaters in probably the worst moviegoing weekend of the year.

Crazy that fucking Spiderman ended up number one this week, I think it was only a 9 million gate for the weekend. Ouch!

Seems like the whole Saturday gimmick of $3 any ticket really didn't bring many out. But hey, they tried!

I ended up seeing Three Thousand Years of Longing in Chicago before it kinda faded off, even got to peep it solo without anyone else in the Dolby theater. Anyhow what a tremendous tripped out film, I really got immersed in it. So uniquely cool and such a rich story and script they produced. Great film for sure.

Frankly quite shocked we are in Sept and still, films like Spiderman, Top Gun, Minions, etc, are all still in the theater mix. I guess this is maybe a countereffect to the lack of productions during covid too, since there isn't really many major films on the horizon here for a bit.

Again, it seems like people are overreacting to summer movies still lingering around in theaters in September. Historically, August & September is 2nd worst time of the year for movies behind January-February.

I do think them doing big re-releases for Spiderman: No Way Home, Jaws, and ET IS probably a sign of slowdown of new content.

Looking at the showtimes for this weekend, I'm surprised to see Elvis still sticking around when it premiered on HBOMax this week.

And hey it's been a lame enough group of movies that I get another week to see Three Thousand Years of Longing even though it's a bomb!

Tried to go to Brahmasta Part One on Saturday (it was in IMAX 3D format even) but the damn thing sold out, Based on the per screen amount, it really did well.

Jaws 3D/IMAX must have been a big fat gooseegg the past few weeks as I hasn't even hit top 10 level. Not that I expected a huge turnout, but damn. I saw it on Saturday and of course was the only one in it. The 3D remaster was pretty well done.

Brahmasta Part One slipped out of being number two last week to at least out of the top ten (I would assume in the 11-13 range), not a huge shock since screens probably dipped but around the region here, the screens actually expanded, with more 3d showings as well. The 3d aspect was maybe the best effects since Avatar quite honestly, plus whoever handles Disney/Marvel 3D stuff (this is a Disney film FYI) always delivers so this was no shock. Fucking long Bollywood meets Marvel movie (almost 3 hours), but an endearing mythological story that I really enjoyed.

I plan on seeing God's Country before it leaves, which is probably soon. Also planning on peeping the David Bowie biopic (its been in IMAX lately), and See How They Run looked fun from the trailer I saw and worth a look in time.

"Don't Worry Darling" actually did better than I thought it would. Also, "The Woman King" didn't get much of a drop (outside of IMDB, which has become a haven for right wing trolls and downvoters*, it seems to be pretty well loved) and while not making a whole lot of money, it's good to see "Barbarian" and "Pearl" still in the top five (I was hoping Scorsese praising "Pearl" would give it a boost, but it at least didn't have much of a drop.)

*Rotten Tomatoes had the same problem but ended up making it that you had to prove you actually watched the movie before you reviewed it-hence why the audience score is pretty high too. Letterboxd-which is the best movie related app/site that isn't for streaming-had a somewhat similar problem with "Blonde" but in reverse-instead of right-wing assholes, it's people who are mad and think it's exploitative while they also haven't seen the film. TL;DR version-maybe other sites should also do what Rotten Tomatoes are doing when it comes to audience ratings and reviews.

Looking at the BO, this is quite the year of long runs for films. The DC SuperPets movie has held tremendous ground, Minions somehow is STILL hanging on, Top Gun 2 is not letting up, but it feels like soon, most of these films will be finally leaving theatrically. Another odd one that's hung on, yet not sure how profitable is still is, but Where the Crawdads Sing still is playing all over the place around here.

Between long runs for these, there's sure alot of reissues too taking hold a bit. The Avatar re-release had some good numbers, I am hoping to go see that again in IMAX 3D this week as I heard there's a few additions to it.

Hoping to catch Don't Worry, Darling this week and maybe Woman King if I get time.

I'm genuinely curious how the Avatar sequels do. I'm not cynical or stupid enough to predict it's going to be a bust but for all of the money the first one made, it left such little cultural impact.

It's an ambitious and dare I say, foolish project in some aspects. I think the idea is that Cameron is hoping theaters embrace further technology in 3D, 4DX, etc, in coordination with furthering those avenues with better projection options, better 3D options (Dolby 3D seems to be the latest direction vs Real3D). I think the second part will do alright, but I question the rest trailing off if the second film isn't as compelling as the first.

It would be one thing if it's a trilogy, but the attempt at five films is far too ambitious at this stage.

I mean the MCU releases dozens of films and shows no signs of slowing down so I can see why James Cameron thinks five Avatar films will work but who has that level of loyalty and attachment to Avatar? Even Star Wars had to pivot into television after two underwhelming movies in a row.

We should all probably give up on doubting James Cameron after Titanic and Avatar but Idk. It just doesn't seem like the world is crying out for new Avatar content.

Avatar 2 will fare just fine in theaters but Cameron is going to receive an enormous amount of shit regardless. "IT ONLY MADE $3B!? SUCK IT TERMINATOR GUY!!!"

Cameron is enough of an annoyance to the studios that I think part of them is licking their lips waiting to see him fall on his ass.

And yeah, it could be the highest grossing film of 2022 but people will still be disappointed somehow if it only makes 2 billion.
