The thread about how Sony's customer service is 1,000 times worse than Microsoft

I've owned a PS3 since November 30th, and since then, over 50% of the Blu-Ray discs I have rented from Netflix have not worked. The same thing happens every time- I pop the disc in, and it just keeps making the same noise over and over again: *disc reading noise* *disc reading noise* *GRIND*. The things never load. The other half, however, work fine.

It really pisses me off. I paid $300 for this thing, and since all but maybe 8 of the games worth playing are also available on the 360, one of the primary reasons I bought it was to watch Blu-Rays. What's the deal?

Why do so many Blu-Rays not work on the PS3?

I've had my PS3 since launch (60Gig) and have rented hundreds of Blu's from Netflix with no issues at all, so maybe it's your PS3?

There's no rhyme or reason behind it, though. All the movies were new releases, and some work and some don't. They've all been in pristine condition physically.

Never had a problem playing Blu Rays with mine. I did hear from someone that the blu ray player in the slim model has been problematic. Although I haven't seen any confirmed reports on it.

Sounds like an issue with the unit. I had a similar problem with Disc Read Errors for both the PS2 and Gamecube, and both did exactly the same thing. The PS2 ended up being replaced because it was a major issue that Sony lost a lawsuit about. The Gamecube I had to keep adjusting the laser every 6 months or so until it eventually died. By that point the backwards compatible Wii was a couple of weeks from release so I didn't have to worry about it any more.

It has to either be an issue with your system settings, or your PS3 is faulty. I've had my PS3 for over a year and have played tons of different DVDs and BDs on it, both old and new. Never have had a problem with a single disc playing.

Here's the weird part, though- the Funny Peole disc from Netflix didn't work last night, but I popped in a Blu-Ray I own and it worked fine. So how can it be the system?

The same way I own an Xbox that will play Assassin's Creed or Modern Warfare perfectly fine, but AC2 and MW2 both won't load past the title screen. I'm just assuming not all discs are made the same and the lasers in these consoles are faulty and can read a disc that's made one way but not the other.

In my case it has no problem reading older games but it did with newer games which just lead me to believe they're making them a little differently now. Point is, even if it plays some stuff it's possible it's damaged..

It most likely has some dust on it that is preventing it from playing certain things at certain times. My suggestion to you would be to buy a 10$ cleaning kit for a blu-ray player and try that. Usually the cleaning kit is just a fine brush on a blu-ray disc and it will get the dirt off. I say usually, because that's the norm. This will likely fix the problem. And even if you keep a place spit spot clean, it can still get in there and mess with things.

If that doesn't fix it Matt, then its most likely the laser is not working correctly and you'll need to get it replaced. Unfortunately, these things are whimsical at best, so it could work perfectly one moment, and not work the next. I'm more hoping you have the dirt problem, rather than a real laser issue.

I've had my PS3 for a couple years now, never had a problem with a blu ray disc.

Sign me up to. I watch the hell out of some blu rays and I've never ever had a problem with my system.

You said you just got it at the end of November. How long is your warranty? Because I don't see it being a dirt/dust issue if it never worked.

Something's clearly wrong on your end. My PS3 has never had a problem with any Blu-Ray I've ever watched.

Well, shit. I got my system back 2 weeks ago, right before I left for Phoenix. I just tried to watch a Blu-ray on it last night, for the first time since I got it repaired. Shit doesn't work. Thanks a fucking lot, Sony.

I guess my only option is to buy a new system, put the old one in the box, and then return that.

Matt, you probably aren't going to be able to do that if you go to some place with intelligence. Some places keep track of the serial.

Just warning you.

Well, Best Buy didn't keep track of the serial number on the receipt when I bought the thing in the first place.

The trhead about how Son's customer service is 1,000 times worse than Microsoft

AND to top it all off, when I try to send a service request to the PS3 web site, it says my serial number is not valid. What the FUCK? I copied it directly off the back of my system, and I've used it before.

Fuck Sony. I'm just going to get rid of the system. This is just inexcusable.

Thats why you need to call em, dude. They already "serviced" the machine, so your number probably wouldnt be active again, in case someone else tried to use your number.

In other words, you're in a weird circumstance that, because you already sent it in, its not going to be the same situation as last time. They need to obviously dig deeper with you to get the problem fixed. So you need to try another way to get in touch with em on this. Even an email to them would be a start. You still have the thing under warranty so they will help ya out.

I just messaged you back on Facebook, but yeah, I called them and they said I'd have to do the exact same thing as last time- wait 3 weeks and hope they don't botch the repair again. Needless to say, I have little to no faith that they'll repair it correctly.

My launch day PS2's fan died about a month into its life. Oddly for me I wasn't angry about it at all I just mailed it in for repairs and didn't worry about it. Got it back fairly fast too with the fan now working. The problem was that (presumably during transport) the disc reader broke, because Sony sucks ass at packaging their systems for shipping. So I had to send it back again, and of course both time despite protecting the shit out of it when I mailed it to them they would never re-use what I sent, oh no they had to send their own cardboard box with no protection what so ever. I was surprised the thing didn't get broken again when they sent it back.

So yeah it's possible that they did indeed fix it, but it got rattled in shipping. Microsoft are no saints, but damn if they don't have the fixing/shipping parts down for busted x-boxs.

Yeah, Microsoft does a great job with the shipping of the systems. You wrap it in the plastic sleeve, and then place it into those nice foam ends that prop it up in the box. It's well done.

Yeah I had to send my 360 in after a RROD and they did a remarkably good job all around.

They had a lot of practice by that point, of course.

It's the same for the PS3. Only, like I said... they didn't fix it.

A friend is recommending that I talk to a supervisor/manager and try to get them to send me a new system. I don't know. I'm not particularly good at being assertive.

Matt, can you cry? Crying always works. Just cry about how its interfering with your life that you need to send this thing in for repairs and it shouldn't need to.

Crying does wonders.

Upon the suggestion of my friend Nate, I called again and harassled (my new word) them a little bit. Finally, I spoke to a manager and he said he changed the service order so that they will send me a new system when they receive mine, rather than trying to fix it. I don't trust a word they say, but I hope that is true.
