Emily Youcis, better known as “Pistachio Girl” at Philadelphia Phillies games, has been fired from her vendor job by Aramark, because she couldn’t stop supporting white nationalism online.

Pistachio Girl was known for her distinct singing as she hawked concessions, even after the park stopped selling pistachios:

Youcis appeared in a video of a Nov. 19 anti-fascism protest of white supremacist Richard Spencer’s National Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. She walked around with a microphone and asked if anyone wanted to have a discussion; a brief fight broke out near her but nothing else really happened. That probably had to do with her termination. It probably also had to do with how she tweets about the white race being threatened:

I get what they're saying here, but you could say the same thing if "alt-right" idiots started stealing the images of and drawing Bart Simpson or Charlie Brown with a Hitler moustache. Sure, they're not of the same magnitude, and their respective owners have the resources to lawyer-up should anyone misuse their IP, but you get my point (I hope). I don't think that established characters that have previously had nothing to do with hate should necessarily be deemed overall/blanket hate symbols when a movement starts to co-opt and steal their image. Just seems unfair and super-reactionary.. like whenever an American sees the traditional East Asian usage of a swastika and loses their mind over it.

It's not like a swastika or a 'porch monkey' where it's universally understood, most people probably wouldn't even recognize the image, let alone associate it with hate.

This has no association with any kind of institutional discrimination or hatred, I don't really think we have to throw Pepe away.

Since then, Pepe's creator, Matt Furie, had publicly expressed[3] his dismay at Pepe being used as a hate symbol, and is currently attempting to return a more positive connotation to the meme through various means, including a Twitter campaign called #SavePepe

as an average person i'd never heard of it until the altright started using it and it got all the attention so thats how I know it.
