Time to Slit Wrists and Write Dark Poetry: Gothic Rock/Gothic Metal Thread

Small Wonder printed a whole bunch of different-colored issues of "Bela Lugosi's Dead." Pink-on-pink (pink cover with pink vinyl) is probably the coolest one. I had a regular old black 12" copy (purchased for 86 cents at work) which I foolishly, being somewhat new to vinyl at the time and figuring that all 12" records should be played at the 33 1/3 speed, played way too slow the first couple times I listened to it. The song is legitimately frightening at that speed, let me tell ya.

How liberal are we being w/r/t our definition of 'goth'? Because if early dream-pop qualifies then fuck yeah.

Love the Cocteau Twins and I'm being pretty liberal. The grunge thread itself featured bands that had songs that varied the rock spectrum pretty far and IMO, Goth is fairly similar in that some bands are more "pure" whereas others have tinges.

Joy Division love...

First time I ever heard Dead Souls was Nine Inch Nail's version on The Crow soundtrack. I didn't know that was a cover and when I heard the original I was blown away. I loved NIN's version, but Joy Division's is amazing.

Count me in on the Cocteau Twins and Siouxsie love if they count as goth rock

Do The Jesus and Mary Chain fall under the auspices of goth?

The Chameleons - Swamp Thing

I don't know if many people consider the Chameleons (UK) to be "goth" but if post-punk bands like Joy Division are in, then I'd definitely have these guys in too.

Oh God, I love "Strange Days." The Chameleons other albums are solid, but that one is so fucking great.

Re: Time to Slit Wrists and Write Dark Poetry: Gothic Rock/Gothic Metal Thread

Bumping this thread for some random stuff... A lot of recent Goth acts have morphed closer to the Industrial realm so there's a lot of bleedthrough IMO.

Skinny Puppy - Assimilate Just the song but their song "Dig It" directly influenced Trent Reznor in making songs

Android Lust - Stained They have an official video but I prefer the weird artwork of this one...

KMFDM - Naive

The Legendary Pink Dots - Love Puppets

Coil - Slur Just the song...

Also of note regarding NIN/SP: Trent Reznor and Skinny Puppy vocalist Nivek Ogre worked together in "industrial super group" Pigface. Here they are performing "SUCK":

I would wish I could find a studio version of this song if it didn't sound so professional anyway. I couldn't even tell this was a Peel session until someone pointed it out to me.

Re: Time to Slit Wrists and Write Dark Poetry: Gothic Rock/Gothic Metal Thread

Continuing the fun with more variation... earlier we kicked things off with the heavy, Industrial emphasized keyboard-synths/bass style of Gothic music so let's bounce back to the 'prototypical' guitar punkish dark side of what initially encapsulated what it meant to be Gothic Rock.

You can instantly see the 'Goth' aspect of these songs but also the differentiation of styles and genres from the prior post of mine too. I liken Gothic Rock/music a lot to Grunge in that it's an all-encompassing label while representing pretty vast and varied styles within the umbrella.

Gothic Rock basically traces its roots from: Post-Punk, darker Dance/Club, Proto-Industrial/Industrial, and Dream Pop/Ethereal Rock. I'll probably do another post later on covering more of the dream pop/dance aspect.

There's a lot of great little unexplored/unknown Goth Rockish acts that sprouted in the early 1980s and subsequently vanished after 2-3 years. Been using Discogs.com as a way to explore the earlier era.

Under Two Flags - Drown Inside (1983)

The Midnight Choir - Leanora's Bedtime Stories (1983)

Specimen - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (1983)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXjs859UdKI

Metro Decay - Κειμήλια (1983) Greek Post-Punk/Goth Rock(!)

Hack Hack - Chambermaid (1983)
