Its now 7 years since the First Chapter's original release, but the PSP version of Trails In The Sky is now gracing our lands.
Produced by Falcom (Ys Seven), Trails In The Sky is the 6th game in the Legend of Heroes series. Widely regarded as the game that we never would see on our shores (due to many different reasons), Trails In The Sky is a game that many RPGers (such as myself) craved to get ahold of because its supposedly really, really, really good.
You'll begin the First Chapter, as Estelle Bright. Yes, that's right, our main character is a female. She's the daughter of Cassius Bright, a legendary figure in the Liberl Kingdom. She actually completely ignorant of how important her father's accomplishments are, but is a pretty good person. She wields a staff and is a member of the Bracer's Guild.
The main male character is Joshua Bright. Joshua is the non-biological son of Cassius Bright. While just a child, he attacked his father and fought him. His battle prowness and skill were amazing, and so Cassius adopted Joshua into his family. Unfortunately, Joshua lost his memory as a result of the fight. He wields dual swords.
The story begins as just taking Bracer quests to advance the story, but soon you'll uncover some dark truths and it'll progress from there till the end of the story.
First Chapter's game play is the standard menu based format, however, combat abilites have cooldowns, so you'll need to watch out what moves you use and when. Battles aren't long, but they will at least make you think, which is all you can ask out of an RPG.
The crowning point of First Chapter though, is probably its music. Which I have sampled, because I always wanted this game to come over and its just damn great. Here's a sample of it here: Tracks In The Sky.
As you might have noticed, I've been using the term First Chapter a lot. This is because the whole game, Trails In The Sky, is broken into 3 games. The first game was released on PC, as Trails In The Sky: First Chapter. Hence my usage of that.
Now as you might have noticed, I mentioned at the beginning there are a few different reasons why the game has never been brought over till now, but the most significant one, was the amount of work that would be need to translate this game. There is so much text in the First Chapter, that you'd need a professional translator going at it for quite some time. Add in that you need to make sure there are no mistakes moving from the First Chapter, to Second Chapter, to 3rd, that it makes it even harder to translate.
It was pretty amazing to see XSEED decide to translate it, considering the massive amounts of text involved in First Chapter, let alone what the other two games are going to be like. Thankfully, with the job they did on Ys Seven, I'm sure they'll do just fine with Trails In The Sky.
The First Chapter is going to be released on March 29th, so get your PSP's ready and have a fun time with it. I know I sure will.
