I'm unsure about this. I like the idea, probably will like the score, but am not the biggest fan of the director.

I'm not even sure how this will play as a full length movie.

The 69% fresh, middle of the road reviews don't help me make up my mind on the matter either.

I'll probably see it anyway, since I tend to see most movies in theaters. Anybody else?

Are you kidding? The trailer was one of the most beautifully crafted trailers I've seen in years. All the critics I respect so far either like the film (Ebert, Berardinelli) or have completely loved it (Rolling Stone, EW, At the Movies). So I plan to catch it this weekend.

And how can you not like Spike Jonze. Sure he's only made 2 films but Being John Malkovich and Adaptation were two inventive and original pieces of work.

I find it refreshing how the look of the movie resembles that of the book. It seems like every time something old gets remade its "re-imagined" and they fuck up the look of the original and kill most of the charm.

I didn't like the trailer, it just screamed "trying too hard."

It has a 70 at metacritic, which is a good sign. I look forward to seeing it

Yeah, that trailer was fucking bullshit, especially that little homosexual kid at the end saying in his little douchebag prepubescent voice "Where the Wild Things Are - Starts October 16". Fuck that kid. I know it`s a movie about a kids book, I don`t need some little kid doing a voiceover to induce some fake emotion of nostalgia with pretend epic music in the background

Then stay the fuck away Tarwen cause the movie was beautiful. Maybe the trailers are making a hard sell, but they are advertisements after all.

I saw the film this afternoon, and while it does have a couple slow spots I thought it was a great film. The kid (Max Records) give a very natural performance, acting just like a 9 year old should, bossy, loud, emotional yet sympathetic. What's great is that he doesn't 'grow up' after learning life lessons at the end, but he does have a better gradual understanding of how he feels by the end. Cause that's how we grow up. Learning things little by little, sometimes it can be harsh, but we get up from it.

The voice work for the Wild Things was perfect. Nothing felt out of place or done as stunt casting. The voices maybe well known actors, but their the RIGHT well known actors.

***1/2 out of ****

I agree that the voice work was great. But the movie was sloooooow.

Didn't work.

My feelings on the movie are exactly what I thought they were going to be, which doesn't always happen. The movie was actually somewhat depressing. It just didn't work...

Wasn't the book like really short? How did they draw it out into a movie?

I couldn't find myself caring at all, about any of it. Bunch of jerks. If I wanted to see a 9 year old dealing with his parents divorce, I'd travel back 11 years and look up my cousin. Also, should have been called "James Gandolfini's heavy breating". Really wanted to love this movie, but couldn't. Should have known better, since I hate Being John Malkovich and Adaptation crapped out after a while. Shot beautifully and all that jazz, but I have no idea who this was shot for.

They drew it out like this... Max does something, someone else gets angry, Max gets sad, then angry, then sad, then happy. Repeat 10 times.

This was the impression I got from the trailer too, but it's possible I saw a different trailer than those that really liked it... Could someone that liked it link the "correct" trailer so we're all on the same page?

Granted I saw it in the IMAX, but I thought this was a pretty good heartfelt story. More importantly, I thought the translation from book to film was excellent and very creative/imaginative. I grew up on this book, read it damn near every night around that same kid's age in the film, so it pulled on my emotional strings a little bit as a nostalgia trip to my youth.

If you didn't know or read the book growing up, I could see how one would not like it very much, and it most definately didn't feel whatsoever like a kid's film.

I didn't read the book, so it made no sense to me at all. Why the hell don't they eat the little bastard?

Just because they connected with the kid despite being from two different ends of the spectrum, so to speak. Typical morality tale about giving people a chance even though they might not be like you is how I always took the story theme pertaining to that when I was little.
