I haven't finished it yet, but here's what I've got to say about it:
- Gameplay is like Kingdom Hearts but going about 3x as fast. I'm only playing on Normal and its very intense and especially more so when you are fighting more than 1 baddie. Switching characters makes it even more chaotic and exciting, which is also fun because switching characters is easily done.
- The music is superb and never gets boring. Hell, I'm listening to the music selections CD that came with my CE copy and I'm still listening to it. I'm quite sure that some of the music has replaced a few of my favorite pieces of RPG music.
- Its pretty damn straight forward in what it delivers for story but that's actually its strong point. You don't need to think very hard about what's happening to who, or wonder what the fuck is going on. Its all there for you to enjoy and everything gets explained as you progress. Except for the few twists.
- Characters are very well developed. Everyone's got their own personality and you'll immediately like them. I don't think I've had a character that I hate in my party yet. Which is astonishing because usually there's always that one character you hate, but I haven't met it yet. And I'm quite far into the game.
- Adol is the best silent protagonist ever. Yes, I just declared him better than Link or Crono. I mean, would you help out a foreign kingdom not because its your duty, not because you are the "destined one", not even because you get freaking awesome crap for it, but its solely for the chance to have an adventure. That's right, that's all he does it for. The adventure and nothing else. Well, he does it for his friends, but its mostly the adventure.
- Localization shines very nicely. I haven't seen a blunder yet, and everything feels right. Its a damn fine job from XSEED and I can't wait for Trails In The Sky's release if the quality is this good.
- Item usage is key to victory and defeat. No really, you actually need to have items and you'll use them often. I've had to use tons of potions and quite a few revives to keep myself going in battle. Then again, potions are the only way to heal in combat. You get no mages who heal, ever.
- Item collection for Synthesis is easily obtainable. Though you'll have to grind to get them.
- Difficulty setting for those who want to get their ass kicked in. I'm having a few issues this late in the game on Normal with staying alive, so I can only imagine what Hard mode is gonna be like. Let alone Nightmare, which is Atlus Hard from what I've heard.
- Ability to save anywhere outside of boss fights is freaking awesome and allows you to just pick up and go whenever you like. You save SO much battery life this way, because you need to stop for a second, instead of pausing, you can just save, and turn it off.
- The triangle system, heavy for sturdy enemies, slashing for soft enemies, and piercing for aerial at first seems silly but works very well and makes sure you utilize all any character.
- Speaking of Boss Fights, they consist of figuring out the boss pattern then dealing with it the best way possible. All boss fights I've had so far you can bring anyone into the fight, regardless of sturdy, soft or aerial. Though, that might change on higher difficulty settings.
- Obtaining techniques is very simple and you get some damn cool ones. Its like Final Fantasy IX's system, but after you collect the technique, you can still continue to level it up. Though you've got to use the techs a lot to level up, so I usually have Teach Rings equipped
I highly recommend this game for anyone who has a PSP, has a love for RP/Action games, and anyone who just want a good game. My highlight of Ys so far was fighting a boss, and due to storyline reasons, you only have a simple sword, shield and a single health potion. I ended the fight with only 7 health, and was just blown away at the intensity of it. Because of that one fight, I'm definitely playing on Hard mode as soon as I finish Normal mode.
