Through the Booking Glass: March 1984 Week 3

March 1984, Monday, Week 3

One of the biggest legends in Mexican wrestling history, El Santo, officially announced his full retirement from the business.  Santo, 66, was a success not only in wrestling, but in the movie industry as well.  In fact, I’m willing to bet he is more known from movies in many areas of Mexico.  Santo is already in the Hall of Immortals from his in-ring retirement but is now leaving his backstage role.

March 1984, Tuesday, Week 3

A strange match has been added to the TV taping tonight, as The Wild Samoans will face Charlie Fulton and Israel Matia in a non-title match.  Between this and Mr. Fuji and Tiger Chung Lee later this month, the Samoans are getting booked against the weirdest competition lately.

WWF Championship Wrestling TV taping (March 1984, Tuesday, Week 3)

I just got home from the WWF’s TV taping at the High Risk Hotel Hall in Wabash, IN.  The building seats barely 300 people but looked close to a sell out.

In a non-title match, WWF Intercontinental Champion Tony Garea defeated Samu in 4:11 by pinfall.

Rene Goulet defeated Nick DeCarlo in 3:30 by submission.

The Great Wojo defeated Mr. Fuji in 1:51 by submission with a Boston Crab.  This was good and needed another five minutes.

In an extremely poor match, The Tonga Kid pinned Bob Bradley in 3:03 with a Piledriver.

In a non-title match, WWF Tag Team Champions The Wild Samoans defeated Charlie Fulton and Israel Matia in 2:56 when Sika pinned Matia with a Samoan Drop.

Victory Corner was next, and Lord Alfred Hayes interviewed Ivan Koloff about the recent exchanges between himself and The Great Wojo.  He also claimed he wasn’t impressed by Wojo earlier tonight, and he will take Wojo out of action for good once he gets Wojo in the ring.

Don Kent pinned Steve Lombardi in 1:56 with a Bulldog.

Hulk Hogan pinned Tiger Chung Lee in 4:15 with a roll up.  This was pretty good, actually.

Iron Mike Sharpe pinned Spike Huber in 2:39 with a Running Forearm Smash.  Give credit to Huber, as he sold the loaded forearm pad like death.

In a bout that had a good crowd and some decent in-ring action, Brian Blair and Andre The Giant defeated Invader # 2 and Al Madril in 16:38 when Andre The Giant pinned Invader # 2 =with The Bodyslam.  Andre looked especially good in this one, but the teams felt like they drew names out of a hat to fill a main event.  By far the best match of the show.

I would have preferred more interview segments but I enjoyed this show.

March 1984, Wednesday, Week 3

Iron Mike Sharpe pulled a tasteless prank on Eddie Gilbert backstage last night, which nearly led to a brawl between the two.  Most backstage were happy about it due to Gilbert’s recent poor attitude, but booker Jared Hawkins still gave Sharpe a token lecture about professional behavior that nobody took seriously.

The first singles match between Ivan Koloff and The Great Wojo will take place in April at Madison Square Garden.  The official date has not yet been announced.

There will be an update segment highlighting Pat Patterson’s recent title defenses airing on this week’s TV.  There will also be a video of Hulk Hogan airing this weekend just before his match with Tiger Chung Lee.

The taping in Wabash, IN drew a sellout of 300 last night.

March 1984, Thursday, Week 3

Another match with Ivan Koloff vs. Pat Patterson has been added to the Spectrum Wrestling show on Saturday, Week 4, although the title has not been mentioned as part of the equation.

March 1984, Friday, Week 3

Samu vs. Chief Jay Strongbow has been added to next week’s show at the Spectrum.

March 1984, Saturday, Week 3

Jules Strongbow vs. Salvatore Bellomo has been added to Philadelphia next weekend.  This lineup looks like it will turn the company, he said sarcastically.

March 1984, Sunday, Week 3

Tony Garea signed a pay-per-appearance deal with Central States Wrestling.  I doubt this will affect his WWF bookings but you can never tell at this point.

TV ratings held steady this weekend.
