Through the Booking Glass: UWF March 1987 Week 2

March 1987, Monday, Week 2

We received reports of an altercation last night between Buddy Roberts and Eddie Gilbert. While I’m not sure what caused it, reports are that Roberts was taunting Gilbert about something and wrestlers had to step in between them before punches could be thrown,

We are unlikely to receive any ratings reports from Sports Channel America for Power Pro Wrestling as the station is on too few cable systems to be tracked. The show drew a solid crowd of 4,296 last night and has received a lot of positive feedback.

Skandor Akbar will be working some show for Pacific Northwest Wrestling.

Terry Funk will have a small role in Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming movie, “Over the Top”.

March 1987, Tuesday, Week 2

Partly due to the success of the Badstreet USA theme, Michael Hayes has recorded an album called “Off the Streets” that will be released later this year. It is expected that a tour will be booked for Hayes to sing cuts off of the album and would likely take place after shows he wrestles on, either as a package deal with the wrestling show or as a separate admission in a small music hall locally.

March 1987, Wednesday, Week 2

Expect Iceman King Parsons vs. Savannah Jack in a gimmick match of some sort to be announced for the show in New Orleans next month. I’d expect the match to be announced at this week’s TV.

March 1987, Thursday, Week 2

The world’s oldest active wrestling promotion, Empresa Mexicana de la Lucha Libre, has announced that it has left the National Wrestling Alliance and will be running independently. EMLL was really a member in name only as they hadn’t seen the NWA World Heavyweight Champion appear in years. The company has also changed its name to Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre in an attempt to be perceived as a worldwide promotion as opposed to just a Mexican promotion.

March 1987, Friday, Week 2

Don’t expect Ted DiBiase or Art Crews to be on TV for at least a few more weeks as they have commitments to fill with All Japan Pro Wrestling.

March 1987, Saturday, Week 2

In sad news, the wrestling world is mourning the loss of another family member as we received word this morning that Rufus R. Jones has passed away at the age of 54. Tributes have been pouring in all day. Jones had some success in the Mid-Atlantic territory but had his best run in 1980-81 in Central States Wrestling, holding the Central States Tag Team Title with three different partners as well as the Central States Television Title.

March 1987, Sunday, Week 2

The rating for UWF Power Pro Wrestling dropped for a 0.04 on KWTV-DT last night.

Live coverage of the UWF Power Pro Wrestling taping (March 1987, Sunday, Week 2)

Tonight’s taping is taking place at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, AR.

In a match that had an average crowd reaction and some decent in-ring action, Rick Steiner (w/Eddie Gilbert) defeated Joe Savoldi in 8:44 by two straight falls, with the final fall happening by pinfall with a Flying Bulldog. Steiner and Savoldi have great chemistry together which made this a much better match than it appears on paper.

Jim Ross interviewed Terry Gordy (with Michael Hayes at his side) where he issued a challenge for the One Man Gang and the UWF Heavyweight Title, saying Gang never truly defeated him for it and would lose it as soon as Gordy got another shot at it. Ross announced the shot was next.

In an extremely short match, One Man Gang pinned Terry Gordy in 4:28 with a 747 to retain the UWF Heavyweight Title. Disappointing.

Bill Irwin & Leroy Brown (w/Jim Holliday) defeated The Lightning Express in 4:15 when Irwin pinned Tim Horner with a Bicycle kick. Despite the loss, I expect big things out of Horner and Brad Armstrong as they work very well together.

Ross interviewed The Sheepherders, who stated their ultimate goal was winning the Tag Team Title from Chris Adams and Terry Taylor.

The Sheepherders defeated The Fantastics in 3:47 when Luke Williams pinned Tommy Rogers with a Battering Ram. These matches are just way too short tonight.

Eddie Gilbert comes out with his clients, Sting & Rick Steiner. As Sting and Steiner flank Eddie Gilbert, Gilbert issues a dire warning to Adams and Taylor. “Mind your own business, punks,” Gilbert announces, “Or we just might target you two pretty boys!” Ross announces Gilbert and Sting vs. Adams and Taylor takes place later on.

The Missing Link defeated Sid Steele in 3:39 by submission with a Figure Four Leg-Lock. Steele is a tall blonde with a vicious mean streak, but he is really green and it showed.

Ross interviews Gordy again, who says his war with Gang isn’t over and he will be back for another shot at the gold.

UWF Tag Team Champions Chris Adams and Terry Taylor defeated Sting and Eddie Gilbert in a non-title match at 3:16. Adams went to hit Gilbert with a Superkick but Gilbert ducked, causing the kick to hit Sting instead. Taylor dropkicked Gilbert from the ring as Adams scored the pin.

UWF Commissioner Bill Watts met with Ross and announced that despite what we saw earlier, Sting and Rick Steiner are the number one contenders to the UWF Tag Team Title and will get the shot in New Orleans at Superblast on April 1987, Saturday, Week 2.

Michael Hayes (w/Sunshine) defeated Big Bubba Rogers (w/Skandor Akbar) in 5:14 by submission to a figure-four leglock. Akbar attempted to break up the hold but Sunshine grabbed the ankle to prevent the interference.

I would have preferred some of the matches to be longer but a better show than last week’s.
