Through the Booking Glass: UWF May 1987 Week 2

May 1987, Monday, Week 2

It took all of 24 hours for Barry Windham to gain heat in the locker room, as he got into an argument with Bill Watts which led to a fight breaking out between the two. It was quickly broken up and owner Jared Hawkins attempted to explain to Windham how much respect Watts has in the company. Windham immediately apologized to Watts and promised it wouldn’t happen again.

The show last night drew 3,517, about 100 shy of a sell out at the Prather Coliseum.

Rick Steiner and Sid Steele were both fined at the show yesterday for violations of the UWF’s drug policy. We did not receive word as to which drugs they tested positive for. Both were reportedly unhappy with the fines.

May 1987, Tuesday, Week 2

The decision to put the UWF Title on Big Bubba Rogers this weekend was made at the last minute. The original plan was to build Rogers up for the title and put it on him later this summer at a big show but with Superblast last month being such a logistical nightmare the big show has been put on hold.

May 1987, Wednesday, Week 2

Rick Rude has officially left Jim Crockett Promotions and is expected to be on UWF TV this weekend.

May 1987, Thursday, Week 2

Big Bubba Rogers vs. Steve Cox has been announced for TV this weekend. The match will be non-title as Cox comes nowhere near the minimum weight for heavyweight.

May 1987, Friday, Week 2

Jimmy Garvin made his last appearance for Jim Crockett Promotions at a house show in Asheville, NC last night and is expected to be at UWF TV this weekend.

May 1987, Saturday, Week 2

Vladimir Petrov made his last appearance for Jim Crockett Promotions. He is expected to be at UWF TV this weekend but my guess is nobody will really care.

May 1987, Sunday, Week 2

The rating for the replay of Power Pro Wrestling on KWTV has dropped to the point where it is no longer being metered. That cannot be good news at all.

UWF Power Pro Wrestling live coverage (May 1987, Sunday, Week 2)

We are at the Prather Coliseum for the second straight week.

In an extremely short match, Iceman King Parsons defeated Action Jackson in 1:52 by pinfall with a Rumper Stumper. These two don’t click at all which made for a horrible match.

A video package highlighting Jimmy Garvin’s debut in the area aired.

In a battle between top ten contenders, Chris Adams defeated Terry Taylor by countout in 15:19. This was a tremendously even match the entire way through with a lot of near falls until both men took a tumble to the arena floor. Taylor rather roughly rolled Adams back into the ring, but stepped into the ring at the count of 10.0000001 and began yelling and screaming at the referee. The crowd hated the finish, largely because many felt Taylor beat the count into the ring but it was perfectly timed.

Jim Ross conducted an in-ring interview with UWF Tag Team Champions Sting and Rick Steiner. The champions said they are tired of hearing about the controversial finish of their title victory, saying they earned a three count in the middle of the ring and that’s all that matters.

A pretaped interview with Big Bubba Rogers and Skandar Akbar was shown. Akbar announced that One Man Gang had gone soft, so he was publicly firing him and putting more time and effort into making sure the new champion had the longest reign in UWF history.

In a non-title match, UWF Heavyweight Champion Big Bubba Rogers defeated Steve Cox in 4:18 by pinfall with a Bubba Slam. These two have amazing chemistry so the match was much better than anticipated.

Chris Adams came out to ringside and asked Jim Ross to strike the result of his match with Terry Taylor from the record book because he doesn’t want to win that way. Taylor came to ringside, and Adams said it wasn’t right for Taylor to lose for helping Adams return to the ring, so he wanted a rematch next week so they could prove who the better man really is. Taylor admits he would have taken the victory but Adams is a hell of a man for offering, so he accepts the rematch for next week.

Angel of Death pinned Derrick Dukes with a piledriver in 1:14.

Jim Ross interviewed The One Man Gang, asking about Skandar Akbar publicly firing him. Gang said he was a success before Akbar, he’ll be a success without Akbar, and if he gets a shot at Rogers the title will be coming back home.

Jimmy Garvin defeated Bill Irwin in 5:30 by pinfall with a Bombs Away. This was actually pretty disappointing but Garvin got a good reaction.

The Awesome Twosome (Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez) defeated The Fantastics in 2:15 when Fernandez pinned Tommy Rogers with a Flying Burrito. This was essentially a squash which shocks me given The Fantastics’ talent but Rude and Fernandez looked incredible. After the match, the Twosome were interviewed by Boyd Pierce and said their ultimate goal was to win the UWF Tag Team Title and they don’t care who they have to go through to get the belts.

Barry Windham defeated Buzz Sawyer in 2:02 by pinfall with a Flying Lariat. They were clearly rushing through this to get it in before going off the air so it wasn’t nearly as good as it should have been.

This was a good show, with Adams vs. Taylor the best match of the night.
