The Sopranos: Rewatch

One thing I noticed on my rewatch was that aside from Bobby, Rosalie Aprille, Meadow, Melfi, Ginny Sack, and maybe Adriana almost every character has at least one moment that makes them absolutely despicable and morally repugnant.

Just watched this actually. I know Tony Sirico is 77 or so now but man did he age a lot, especially in contrast to Robert Iler and Dominic Chianese.

Someone in YouTube comments was saying Drea de Matteo was critical of the show (never really heard this) after she was killed off so probably why she wasn't there. Not sure why those other three weren't though.

Agreed on Edie Falco not really remembering Whitecaps as it is probably one of the greatest pieces of acting in television history. Still very cool to see them reunite, and the Wild Turkey story was hilarious.

Do we know why Drea de Matteo was critical of the show? Even though she was killed off she still was probably the 2nd or 3rd most important character is S4 & S5.

depictions of the mafia in The Sopranos were so accurate, that real members thought that they were being spied on. These conversations were overheard, when the FBI were indeed spying on them.

it's like they found that shit out from the third season premiere lirl

I just listened to that earlier today, and most of the conversation about the first episode was about casting, how Imperioli felt about the role when he took it, and specific details about the episode and filming it. I STRONGLY recommend this.

Also, they got AJ to be a guest on the podcast for an episode centered around AJ.

And Richie is gonna be on the podcast for his death episode bah gawddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

Nancy Marchand might be the best actor in the first two seasons, fascinating character. I think the reason she gets underrated is because she hits a little too close to home for some viewers LOL

I hope this is the last postponement of the movie. I can't wait to see it.

After all these years, I think this is my favorite scene:

This is the best scene in terms of explaining the mafia mentality, while at the same time describing how capitalism influences people's decisions in life that brought them to this point.

@Brooklyn Zoo what did you think of the Kevin Finnerty story?

Made me think of Mad Men (well, a lot of the show does), but this stuck out due to the emphasis on identity and the road not taken. If it’s supposed to be a parallel universe for Tony, and if his decisions in life had been different, I didn’t get the sense that he’d be happy, and he’s still struggling with the same shit (infidelity, screwing people over). And Tony was the type of white person he despised. Ending freaked me out with Tony B almost walking Tony into what I assume is his death. Trippy episode.

What did you think? I’m not sure if I understood everything.

great point about capitalism. There’s definitely some parallels between Tony and Avon and Omar. This country is founded by criminals so it’s not a stretch for some people to think this way.

It's my favorite story from the entire series. I haven't watched Mad Men yet so I can't make that connection. But it did remind me of Twin Peaks. Eeriness and empathy in the same moments. Tony's experience in the coma is reminiscent, to me, of Cooper's and Major Garland Briggs's visions. As you mentioned, the similarities between Kevin and Tony is one of those things that makes it so moving. Tony is an obvious sociopath; Kevin has some of those demons as well but he was better at building new, better, layers over it. Gandolfini using his real voice for Finnerty has always unnerved me whenever I've watched it. And the arc ends with Tony Blundetto, a hint of Livia in the doorway, and Meadow's voice pulling Kevin Finnerty back to Tony Soprano (and away from whatever that family reunion house was...the bright light, Tony B, Tony's health: probably hell).

And the end of Join the Club, with a confused/forlorn Finnerty, and that fucking beacon, with "When it's Cold I'd Like to Die" playing to/through the credits...my favorite scene from the whole series. And one of my favorite uses of music in anything I've ever seen on movies or TV.

I’m both amazed and not at all surprised it only took you 3-4 weeks. This show is addictive, can’t stop watching.

what did you think of the intervention? That might be my fav scene in the whole series. Also pine barrens? Top five fav side characters (not guys like Sil, Paulie, Bobby, etc.)

Oh yeah and what did you think of RICHIE APRILE

the intervention makes me laugh just thinking about it. Defensive ass Chris, mom insults going too far for Paulie, beat down at the end lol

What ever happened to the Russian dude?

5 fav side characters (no order, and I may change when I remember some more):

1) Svetlana
2) Little Carmine
3) Bobby’s dad (Burt Young)
4) Rosalie
5) Furio

lol hated Richie. Dude was mean. But he was funny.

The Russian guy definitely died. They were gonna bring him back for an episode where he was sweeping a floor with half his skull missing and no memories but decided not to.

Sometimes, when I'm down in the dumps, I'll think of something stupid Little Carmine said ("the sacred & the propane," etc) and I'll feel all better.

So this is a stretch I know, because this series has so many landmark episodes, but to prepare for the film this weekend, what three episodes (or maybe even five?) would be considered essential viewing as a lead-in? I watched the series eons ago, and would love a full binge of all of them, but it's just not gonna happen. But I do want to spend the next few nights reliving some of the best and perhaps relevant episodes to connect to the prequel film.
