WWF: Hulkamania era (1984-`1992)

They had already done the Cheryl tights bit the previous month at Summerslam. The timing on that whole feud was weird. It was a good story that got the fans interested but only one ppv match (the snoozer at WM 4 that has none of the heat it should've) and the big angles falling at the least effective times. And then, after all that, no blowoff. Might've been better to put Roberts over Rude to win a Survivor tag match, blowoff their run, and then have Andre come back after the match to beat up Jake and setup the next feud.

WWF @ Long Island, NY – Nassau Coliseum – May 10, 1991 (14,000)

Kerry Von Erich won a 17-man battle royal, by last eliminating the Warlord, to earn an IC title shot later in the card; other participants included: Andre the Giant, the Bushwhackers, Hercules, Koko B. Ware, Davey Boy Smith, Col. Mustafa, Jim Duggan, Earthquake, Jake Roberts, the Barbarian, Paul Roma, Greg Valentine, Bret Hart, & Kato

Still interested in how they got Andre out of this match. I can't see him taking any form of over-the-top "bump" in 1991.

Also the main event of this card was Warrior/Taker, so this was the one shot to get Andre and Taker in the same ring and it just didn't happen.

Apparently the Cheryl tights didn't debut until the 8/7 episode of Superstars. I remember it being much earlier for some reason.

Maybe they wrote Andre out by having Quake attack him before he got in the ring.

Macho Man cameo in the live comedy bit. I think he was the 1st worker who wasn't a toon to appear in a segment.

The skits are all D level stuff of course. You can kind of catch little moments where it seems they only did a couple of takes as the guys will stumble on a word and it isn't reshot or edited.

He was eliminated from the Rumble in 89. I'm sure even broken down he could take a simple over the top drop to the apron - especially if it was something like everyone ganged up on him to tip him over and they could "guide" him slowly.

If he could've done that bump in May, why not do it on ppv 5 months earlier as hyped?

Andre suffered a legit leg injury in Japan a few weeks prior to that Rumble but I honestly thought that's why they eventually did the Earthquake angle

Terry Funk, a pro wrestling great, toured Japan with Andre last November.

“He was in a great deal of pain by then,” Funk remembered.

Andre had shown Funk the X-rays of his recent knee surgeries.

“They had taken out huge chunks of bone,” Funk said. “I mean chunks.”

Even by 89 Andre was still way more physically capable than he would have been for either of those two appearances. Or even at WM6 for that matter. You would think some eye-witnesses would have come out by now regarding this match as well as the two six-man tags he was in with the Rockers on the European tour

I checked and it looks like the '90 Rumble is the last time Andre went over the ropes in a battle royal-type match, although the two '91 battle royals are the only ones he participated in after.

Barbarian never looked cooler than ge did in the Powers of Pain gear. Didn't look scarier than in the Faces of Fear simple gear, though. Basically the fur and antlers held him back.

I agree. But his best singles matches, vs Bret and Boss Man at Royal Rumble '91, happened during the antler era. I wonder how higher up the card he could've been if he didn't have such a dumb gimmick then.

I'm still a Barbarian fan.

After Backlund was let go/left in 84, WWF eventually sued him for taking bookings in 85 despite not having booked him for months the WWF was still claiming contractual rights.

Even worse was Afa, who declared bankruptcy after the WWF stopped booking him, but also did not pay him for not working. So Afa took a foreign tour booking and the WWF came after him legally.

Every voice is reasonabkle except Piper. Shit, just give me Scrooge Mcduck's voice actor.

Studd needs more gravel in his voice

Watched this today. First thing I noticed is much of the background music is reused in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

I actually thought it was Frank Welker voicing Tito at first and had to check Wikipedia to confirm that it wasn’t.

I'll send you a copy if you'd rather just read it yourself.
I figured I was going to get the audio book when it dropped in Dec. I'm more likely to absorb it like a pod then pretend I will sit and read it during my Twitter Doomscrolling time.

I have a shelf of books (Mad Dog Vachon, Andre, etc) waiting for me and the ADD brain to crossover. Last book I read was actually by should be NFL HOFer Bob Harlan.

I used to devour books (bios, wrestling, war and history) but finally getting a viable smart phone a few years ago killed that off. :(

Steve Beverly's Mat Watch from Feb 89 has a note I can't recall hearing before: Piper was pitching to syndicators a talk show where he'd interview celebs and wrestlers. His co-host? Stagger Lee Marshall

This could have been some showmanship as Piper was actively talking to WCW and WWF for a return. Heck, even the AWA was trying to tell syndicates that Piper was going to join them for the Team Challenge Series as a team captain.

Piper and Marshall having a travel show in 1989 sounds awesome if only because you know he'd put Robin Leach in the sleeper.
