I like messy drama so I’m looking forward to seeing the footage, but this feels kinda desperate and pathetic. Tony got corncobbed by that interview like Bischoff in ‘98. They’re gonna show footage of Punk beating up one of their wrestlers and we’re going to, uh, get mad at him and support AEW more? Because all this is going to do is make him look cool and make the fans resent his departure from the company more. Worst of all is that this is probably going to lead to the return of Jungle Jack as a top heel.

I will say that they have to do *something* to grab ratings and attention this week because the post-Mania momentum could really do further damage to AEW like it did two years ago. So ideally you would use this to get eyeballs and then shoot a big angle to keep the fans invested. But they don't ever really do stuff like that, and it feels more like settling a score and trying to win online discourse points the only way they can.

Last week: Where the Best Wrestle

This week: The Best Backstage Drama

Let’s see if this tact works. If they wanted to prove they aren’t worried about ratings and getting any sort of buzz again and just genuine want to show how awful Punk is and want to show how serious they take the safety of their talent, just release it now on twitter the afternoon of Mania.

I am assuming they are trying to do what Vince McMahon did post Survivor Series ‘97 and they are showing this footage to build heat for the Young Bucks.

The Dynamite where Ace Steel joins The Elite only to be punched in the balls will be something!

Yes and WWF in November '97 was desperate too, and nobody at the time thought they handled the aftermath well. The "Bret Screwed Bret" interview gets retroactively talked up as a brilliant heel move (despite the fact that it was supposed make Vince sympathetic) but I think it's been overrated in the importance of the company's turnaround and, as Brody said a few weeks ago, the success of the Mr. McMahon heel character was more due to being the antagonist of the red-hot Austin rather than Montreal.

That’s another fallacy of this if it’s “just for heat”, all to get heat and it’s for the Bucks.

For an audience that has already formed its opinion one or another way with them.

They might be internally telling themselves that’s the reason but even the Bucks aren’t dumb enough to think this is going to be met with anything other but cringe induced eye rolls.

I’m not saying it’s great creative. Just trying to get everyone who is afraid it is going to be a straight up burial to calm their tits. I am sure Tony isn’t stupid enough to blatantly do something to bait Stephen P. New and WWE’s legal beagles.

I think it's stupid to show the video, but if this is what happened they wouldn't be showing it. They made the decision that they're tired of him going around lying so they're going to try to embarrass him. If that video shows what CM Punk says it does? You'd never see it.

The only way showing the video makes sense is if Perry actually ends up getting the best of Punk. If it shows Punk going nuts and causing the issue it will just make him a bigger star in WWE. If it shows Perry being an aggressor it makes Punk seem like he was telling the truth.

It also has to be clear cut that Perry reversed it and was choking out Punk. If it's Punk got him in a hold and Perry escaped and a bunch of guys pulled them apart that also is bad for AEW. So, it has to be clear cut that Perry choked out Punk in the end even if Punk started it.

In the end, I just don't think it's worth it. The best case is it makes Punk look bad, but I have zero doubt him and Drew can turn it around and make it a fun part of their story even if that's the case.

Worst case is this has the potential to be a real "fingerpoke of doom" moment. I think that phrase is way over used, but if this is either a parody (which everyone says it's not), is obviously edited for jokes, or doesn't come off exactly the right way it really makes AEW look like shit. And makes TK look like he's losing his mind.

Yeah if it's what they're teasing then Punk looks like a shithead but most people outside AEW's fanbase won't really care. It'll get them talking and that's probably what they want. It didn't need to get to this point but if Punk is going to go around claiming one thing when the evidence proves otherwise then I don't mind this happening.

But, 90% of Punk's gripe in that interview was what led up to that moment. His argument was that Tony wasn't a good boss and should've taken more control months (years) earlier. I don't see how this footage can either prove or disprove that.

Like I said, the only way this makes sense is if Perry makes Punk look like a bitch.

The thing about sharing the footage or not, I have mixed feelings about that.

On one hand, they should continue to let it go. On the other hand this loser has been talking shit for months, people in his company mention AEW without being prompted to do so, it's a constant flow of bullshit. If you have a video that proves someone's lying when they keep talking shit about you, at some point it's going to boil over. AEW tried to take the high road. It's not like they're going to post the footage out of nowhere or unprompted. They've been more than prompted to do it. Standing up for yourself isn't the wrong thing to do here. The bashing and bullshit is mostly going one way right now. Edge came out there to say something about Punk because he hates him, but that's all we've heard from that end in months.

No matter what people say right now, everyone wants to see the footage of what happened. People have been waiting to see it so if they're acting like that's not true, I'm calling bullshit. Bait and switching with some other kind of joke footage would be an extremely bad idea.

If it is some kind of fake out then that would be absolutely the worst thing AEW could do right now and would get the wrong kind of heel heat for the Young Bucks. I don't think Tony Khan would be able to show himself in front of the fans every week if he pulled a stunt like that...which ya know might not be the worse thing but I don't want him to come to that realization that way.

Well its gotten to the point where he's bashing AEW wrestlers (Ospreay) who had nothing to do with any of his incidents. We're at the point now where AEW is well within their rights to try to humiliate Punk. If you air some joke footage you might as well just shut the company down. Nobody would take them seriously.

Something doesn't sit right with me though with the way that they announced it with a crawl text during a show taking place during WrestleMania when no one is watching. It's a Trump like move. It makes me feel like something is rotten in the city of Jacksonville.

I didn't even see anything about this news before I went to bed around 12/12:30 AM EST, which makes me think no wrestling journalist caught it until some sicko decided to watch their recording of Collision after the WM press conferences were done.

Also, WWE sent midcarders to Nitro in a tank and WCW had Bischoff challenge Vince on PPV. People should stop being sensitive about 'they shouldn't address a company full of douchebags who won't stop bashing their wrestlers.' It's overdue. WWE's doing it constantly because they know people want it.

Sorry for bringing politics into the war room, boss but Trump absolutely dropped huge news stories at times when he didn’t think people were paying attention
He was just laughing at something you said.

Tbf, TK absolutely knows people were paying attention at midnight on Mania Saturday night. These are his people.

He was up with me and 909 watching the clusterfuck.

I just don't see any way it winds up a positive. Even if it does draw, at this point it means a WWE guy is getting them good ratings, which by itself is not a good look but with this context has potential to be devastating. I don't see it sending any kind of positive message to anyone backstage and for all I know it could make it look like AEW is chaotic enough backstage to hurt relationships with other companies. And even then, why bait the best talker working into being more vicious with any comments? This is poorly thought out and unless it's a 100% smoking gun proving Punk wrong unequivocally, they shouldn't bother.

Or it's a BTE skit where the Bucks are dressed as Punk and Perry having a wacky fight, which is worse.

The first part there still doesn’t matter. The people who have selected to dislike Punk don’t need to see a video, it’s just more “evidence” and the Punk loyalists will only make this another case that TK is a mean billionaire bully.

It’s not like Hunter is going to see the video and go “Nick we gotta fire this guy he lied about a fight with the curly haired nepo baby”

But good job, Tony. My ass will be seated on Wednesday for this. Kudos on using Punk for your gain one more time.

I actually am fine not catching the show live considering that one way or another it will not only be on Youtube immediately but there's probably an extended too hot for TV cut they put out before Rampage anyway.
