Affliction folds as an MMA promotion

Affliction III

Rumour is that it might be over weed, though that's still unconfirmed.

Affliction III

Yeah, I read the press release (probably @ the same place you did) and due to it's vagueness people are saying it's weed.

CALIFORNIA STATE ATHLETIC COMMISSION DENIES LICENSE TO MIXED MARTIAL ARTS FIGHTER JOSH BARNETT

August 1 Scheduled Bout Against Fedor Emelianenko Not Approved

SACRAMENTO – The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has denied a license to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Josh Barnett after Barnett tested positive for a banned substance.

Barnett’s June 25 drug test came back positive for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid. CSAC learned of the results July 21 and immediately denied a license for Barnett. CSAC also informed the promoter of Barnett’s August 1 bout against Fedor Emelianenko that the bout would not be approved.

“The license of Josh Barnett was denied pursuant to rule 303 of Title IV of the California Code of Regulations,” said CSAC Interim Executive Officer Dave Thornton. “That rule prohibits the use of certain substances, including anabolic agents, by any boxer or MMA fighter.”

Barnett’s test was observed in the presence of a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on June 25 for processing. CSAC was notified of the results yesterday.

Barnett has the right to appeal the denial of his license.

“Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters,” said Thornton. “Anabolic agents and other banned substances put the users of those agents at risk, as well as their opponents. The commission simply will not tolerate their use.”

CSAC has among the toughest drug testing standards of any Athletic Commission in the country.

That is funny there HTQ, cause me and my friend were just going over how it would be hilarious if Dana White paid Barnett off to fail a test or pay the lab off to come back with a positive test.

Fedor's camp wants Brett Rogers.

They also said they realize fans don't want to see Belfort and referenced a Sherdog poll as to why that's an unpopular fight. Ha.

Affliction III

Sherdog posters are the only ones ordering the shows anyway. He needs to face a heavyweight.

Affliction III

I'd really rather see any HW as opposed to Vitor because it keeps the Santiago fight intact and at least makes sense in terms of divisions.

Of course they do. He's the one Fedor's most likely to beat. If they're thinking about this purely from a sporting perspective, they'll probably go with Rogers. But if they're all about business, they'll go with Belfort.

Don Frye and Jeff Monson are both petitioning to get the fight. Monson is pushing for it like it's a cure to a disease that he desperately needs. Don's a little harder to gauge if he's serious or not.

"If Tom was smart, he’d have me fighting Fedor instead of whoever he’s hiring on a one week notice," Don Frye told MMAInsider. "My phone works if he wants a real fight with someone who sell a fight in four days, somebody who will beat that bald-headed commie too."

Either way, Don Frye is awesome.

You do know this isnt the 1st time Barnett tested positive right? Kill this stupid conspircy talk, it's foolish. This isn't sherdog.

Affliction III

Gumption? I'd call it a very real possibility. Also, Lashley didn't get piss tested against Sapp so if he's using right now he probably hasn't cycled off.

Affliction III

I recently heard that KOAB put his name in the hat for fighting Fedor.

So, apparently the whole show has been cancelled. It's at si.com, sherdog, etc etc.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Affliction III

Every day I got closer to buying tickets. Oh well.

Affliction III

They canceled the whole show just because one guy from the Main Event was tested for drugs, yet they had a whole roster of people step in to say they'd take the slot? That's pretty odd like, unless those guys were holding up for a whole lot of money.

Affliction is/was hardly the most well-run or financially sustainable promotion around.
