I saw Alice in Chains open for Velvet Revolver a few years back and I was pleasantly surprised with the new singer.

luke-o, I agree. It's got a good sound, and vocally it's still AIC. The 7 minute running time is a bit much, though.

Lushus, it depends on what you're listening to from him. I've found that any of the old Layne songs he does he tends to sound like a fan trying to do kareoke of AIC and therefore tries to emulate Layne.. which is forgivable, I guess, since how else would someone sing it? Though, seeing this guy get paid to sing "Angry Chair" , "Hate to Feel" and other songs written by Layne is kind of annoying.

I am still little pissed with these guys for going back on their word about only touring once with the old songs (2006) and then going on to do new things.. To me this is like an INXS thing.. you're not going to get big again so just let it die and move on to something new and different.

I don't think Mike Inez (or is it Starr that is touring with them) would be suitable for any backing vocals. The vocals alone make Alice in Chains unique against other 90's era bands.

The new vid is actually pretty good. Get a huge 90's grunge vibe from it, which I'm sure is what they wanted. The older dude looks like Handler Hearn from Dollhouse.

Still not sold on the vocalist, though. Could've been fine with just Jerry on vocals.

I downloaded the album from "one of those sites" last week. It's pretty damn good, and definitely retains the AiC vocal stylings as well as their sound for the most part. "A Looking in View" is probably my favorite track.

I've listened to this several times, and it's honestly one of my favorite albums of the year. It's lived up to my expectations, and I am very impressed with the new front man. He can never replace Layne, but he does an excellent job.

This is going to sound silly, but you can almost imagine Layne's vocals in there if you listen hard enough. I'll need to give it maybe two more thorough listen throughs to accurately rate it, but I like it a lot so far. Great stuff...definitely better than that shit Axl Rose gave us last year.

It's like this: DuVall is pretty good on the vocals, but he just doesn't have what Layne had. It's not the same...it's a great album, absolutely it is, but it's definitely not the same. Musically it is, that's why I said you can almost imagine Layne's vocals in there, but DuVall doesn't quite have the chops.

It's definitely not the same, I agree there. But it's a great album as a whole if you think of them as a new band. One thing I did after downloading the album was to change the artist name to just "AiC" in my iPod. I don't consider it the same type of Alice in Chains that I'd want to hear mixed in with the older stuff. I'm treating this as a completely different band even if 3/4 of it are the same.

Yeah, I would probably do the same, that's a good take on it. It's hard to call yourself the same band when a vocalist as iconic as Layne is no longer a part of the group.
