We just had this thread when the board started.

Are you talking about the thread where we chose our no. 1 band? If so, I consider this to be a slightly different category.

Explain the slight difference between band we couldn't live without and our #1 favorite band. I'm just not seeing it.

Refused is my no. 1 band. Elliott Smith is the one musician whose music I cannot live without. There, I did it.

Similarly, Sonic Youth is my #1 band, but I could probably live without ever hearing their music again. On the other hand, I couldn't live without ever hearing "Ignition (Remix)" again, so I guess R. Kelly would be my answer for this thread.

We should discuss them a little bit. I have much to learn, having only gotten Gentlemen back in August and then the rest a couple months ago. What strikes me the most is how much musicality there is to what they were doing relative to their contemporaries. The glimpses of soul on Black Love impress me a lot.

One of my regrets from high school band is that our jazz combo never went through with our plan to become, for one night, Sean Bon Jovi, in which we would play jazz renditions of Bon Jovi hits.

I never got the whole Alice in Chains thing, either.

As a non-musicfag, check it out:

My favorite band in the history of the world is Radiohead. I find just about everything they do as totally brilliant and all that. Unfortunately, life is about more than brilliance. Life is about vitality and verve and zest (not the soap) and all that good shit. It's hard to frolic in a park on a beautiful day to the strains of "How to Disappear Completely." All you'll do is get down and think about stuff. Introspection is nice, but if I were stranded somewhere with only one musician/band to listen to, I'd need something to strengthen my resolve and keep me upbeat. That's why Kylie's my All. Time. Favourite. I could have gone a few days without food, but "In My Arms" would send me into a euphoric frenzy of dance and happiness despite my situation. Hope I cleared that up a little.

Whose favorite band ever is Bon Jovi? Honestly now. I mean, other than 17-year-old girls who once sang "Living on a Prayer" on a Greyhound bus en route to a marching band competition that they would eventually go on to win. People who passionately care about music would not say they could never live without Bon Jovi.

I don't have an answer to this, incidentally. I'm not always good at these parlor games. Sorry!

100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong.

To paraphrase Triumph, "Over 100,000,000 bon jovi fans in here with nearly 200 steady jobs!"

I think you can have a #1 favorite band and still have another band you, "can't live without." My favorite band at one point was easily Metalocalypse Dethklok but I'd rather declare Rush my "can't live without" because, hey, there are only a hand full of Dethklock songs...

That's the way I see it... there's a lot of artists I tend to like and consider, hell my top 2 aren't even in my 10 favorite albums... but if I had to be... in this case stranded or totally isolated? it would have to be Peter Gabriel for me. I considered Gary Numan for a while, but the lyrics would eventually get to me in the way Radiohead would for you.

Its hard to say. Depending on the day of the week it is either Mariah Carey or Prince. I will go with Mariah for no other reason she was the last person I heard on my iTunes.

Its really tough to pick all time song. Too many good ones, way too many, my all time favorite for the week would be. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man' by Prince. For no other than its my most played song on my ipod.

A Tribe Called Quest

The first CD I ever bought (with my own money no less) was Midnight Marauders, which I picked up because I loved the song "Award Tour". I've pretty much worn out that CD, can randomly recite at least 5 to 6 different Phife Dog verses at any time (that's a big deal for me, because my memory for song lyrics is terrible, even on songs I really, really love. Probably because I can't hear all that well.). The impressive beats, smooth melodies and fun lyrics really engaged my 15 year old self. This is the kind of album you can just hit play on track 1 and just let it go the entire time; admittedly, though, "Sucka Niggas" was a bit of an acquired taste.

Later on, I discovered that this was the same group that had put out "Scenario" and "Jazz", and I just HAD to pick up The Low End Theory. Loved that one too, but surprisingly it took a little while to grow on me. MM is still my all-time favorite, but TLET is number 2.

Freshman year in college I picked up Beats, Rhymes & Life and man, that and The Roots' Illadelph Halflife was pretty much ALL I listened to that year. Well, that and Crash from Dave Matthews Band. (I know.) Later that year I discovered I was in the extreme minority in liking BRL, and I'm still as puzzled now as I was then.

A couple of years later I picked up The Love Movement and it took me a good long while to warm up to that one. It just seemed flat and uninspired at first, from the similar beats to the stark white and plain CD art. The last non-bonus song is really depressing sounding, even though it's supposed to be an up-tempo track. It almost seems like everyone knew this was their last track as a group, though I doubt that's actually what happened. However, I have come to appreciate this album as well, in spite of its flaws.

I didn't pick up Tribe's debut album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, until a few years ago. Mainly because I've always hated "Bonita Applebum". I know that's hip-hop sacrilege, but something about that song really, really annoys me, even to this day. (The remix off Revised Quest, the first remix and rarities album, is dope, though.) However, I really liked this album once I picked it up. It amuses me just how different Phife Dog became from this album to TLET. He doesn't even really rap on this album, just kind of singing. COMPLETELY different guy on the subsequent albums, and that's for the better. As for the album itself, except for the aforementioned "Bonita Applebum", "Ham & Eggs" and "I Left My Wallet In El-Segundo", it's freaking great. Makes me feel stupid for ignoring it every time I hear it.

My favorite Tribe albums in order:

1. Midnight Marauders
2. The Low End Theory
3. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
4. Beats, Rhymes & Life
5. The Love Movement

...Yeah, this is a repost.

Ditto. Otherwise; Eminem, Motley Crue or GNR.

Alice in Chains.
Fucking great choice. Easily my second right behind PJ. :)

My top three bands have long been the Hip, Rush, and Tool. Everything else has been a mess, and I can remember having this debate in 2003. Disturbed and Pink Floyd probably complete the top five, but that's leaving Zeppelin, Nirvana, Metallica, Kiss, and Finger Eleven somewhere in the cold.

Having said that, I can remember a time when I 'just didn't feel like listening to' a song or album by any one of the bands I've just mentioned. That's never happened with the two quoted bands.

EDIT: Just came to me. It's also never happened with Stevie Ray Vaughn. My answer is Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Metallica. Enough variety to keep me interested, especially with the older stuff, and plenty of covers of some of my other favorites to make me go "hey, I remember those guys."

I expect the kids born in the 1990s to shit all over this, but back in the day Hammer was the man and you're lying to yourself if you didn't get down to this.

Alice in Chains (Layne Staley version).

The live and unplugged album is just unbelievable, and really is the album that seperates them from my other top choices.

There seems to be a ton of AIC fans here. Honestly though, it may just be Layne, not the rest of the band. As I don't like the current group, and I really liked Mad Season, specifically River of Deceit, thanks to Layne.

The main reason why I like Alice in Chains as much as anyone does here, is the harmony of both Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley.

I agree. Cantrell could write some great riffs. The combination of his deep vocals, and Layne's almost ghostly voice created a very distinct sound. I love their Unplugged album, and even bought Music Bank when it was released about 10 years ago. I have their music video DVD, and Layne was looking downright scary towards the end, especially at the Unplugged show. I read somewhere that he was weighing less than 100 lbs at the time of the show, and even fell asleep on his stool several times. God bless him though, he and the rest of the guys recorded a classic that night, and several other great albums.
