Re: I post YouTube videos of Japanese music too good to be stuck on those islands.

This thread's a pain in the ass to scroll through considering what I am about to do.

As somebody who knows next to little about Japanese music (except maybe the band that produced the Teen Titans theme song), is the history of Japanese music similar to America's history?

I know that Japanese Pop is a thing but did they evolve into their own branches of say country, blues, punk, metal, goth, and such or is it more distilled into like: Pop, Rock, Hip Hop?

Yes, Japanese music has been evolving for decades, and really the only reason it's not more well-known is because of the language barrier. Most early Japanese pop music was imitative of American/British music that was popular at the time, but they've developed unique genres of their own. There's Enka, which is kind of a mix of traditional Japanese singing that used Western form, kind of the first "pop" music of Japan. It's fallen out of style, but since everyone likes retro stuff, it's been mashed up with modern sounds and styles.

You've got visual kei, which is considered a musical genre even though the name just tells you that the bands like to play dress up. There are other sub-genres, too, but mostly you'll find distinct sounds within the genres, as opposed to actual different branches.

This entertains me too much. Black people from Memphis rapping in Japanese? That's pretty classic.

The scenes with the two identical hipster couples trying to out-hipster each other are fantastic.

That's an incredible amount of visual information to take in all at once. I feel dizzy.

this is great. a fusion of jpop and BABYMETAL. The metal parts are hilarious with them fucking around with SPIDERS and shit. and yes, THEY RAP TOO!

That's the current number 3 song in Japan.
