Playing as Belgium right now and qualified for Euro 2012. Beating on shitty Angola as we speak. They have a player named GERALDO. BIG DOG EDEN HAZARD beasts for my team. But I accidentally clicked the wrong box and can't get a club job for shit. I'm fucked, as soon as I'm fired I'll be forced to coach some shit like Alicante or Portsmouth or Leeds :(

Best thing so far is that RAFA wound up at Real Madrid

Let's talk about FM itt

Tearing shit up with Bayern right now. Just hit the January transfer window and I'm simultaneously trying to make my squad even more beast without giving up Muller or Badstuber.

Starting 11. 4-2-3-1, backups in parentheses.

Gomez (Lukaku)
Ribery (Pranjic) Muller (Kroos) Robben (Muller/Altintop)
Schweinsteiger Tymoschuk (No backups needed, unlimited stamina)
Coentrao (Contento) Badstuber Van Buyten Lahm (NBN)

My starting XI is usually...

Lukaku (Dembele)
Maarten Maartens (Chadli) Hazard (Mertens) Mirallas (Witsel)
Fellaini (Mudingayi) Defour (Wuytens)
Vermaelen (No backup) Vertonghen Kompany (Van Buyten) Swerts
GILLET

Never mess around with my tactic either, but these guys always get hurt with their clubs and it screws me up.

Just snagged a 3-1 away win at the Bernabeu, and clinched the Bundesliga like half an hour ago. Mourinho bitched about my style of play. The irony.

K, so I got the Hearts job, stuck in 9th place when I started. Took the job for just six months so I could bail out easily if things didn't go well. Playing shitty ass old school English bums style hoofball 4-4-2. Third league game, against St. Johnstone and it started to snow. BUT WAIT...

I get to play with

an ORANGE ball

So awesome. So I win the game, scoring every goal as I have so far. Either from corners OR on 30 yard bomb shots. Up to 6th, only a few points out of a Europa League spot. Oh yeah Hearts of Midlothian gonna find a way to break up Old Firm dominance.

edit: and I just affiliated myself with Arsenal so I could take their youth loanees.

World Cup Qualifying Draw I received...

Holland
Belgium
Czech Republic
Georgia
Cyprus
San Marino

Karma for your motherfucker of a Euro group, no doubt.

We did the treble, beating Barca on penalties in the final. Thomas Muller got Bundesliga Player of the Year, and Werder Bremen got relegated so I got MERTESACKER for 8 mil. Think I'm going to do Badstuber Mertesacker Otamanbeast Lahm as my back 4 and never concede a goal ever again.

I've never played this game before and since I don't have a compatible operating system at the moment, I'll have to wait a bit but I'd love to check this out. Looks like a blast.

You can't play as the Timbers until the next game, which will come out later this summer/during the fall. Fyi

I'm just not as good as this game as I used to be. I guess I just missed out on fine tuning the advances in tactics/ formations etc. I'm on my second season with Blackburn and I'm sitting about 15th in the Premier League. I've had to settle with a draw due to a late opposition goal (like the 87th minute) the last few fixtures. I am in the League Cup final though (and will probably quickly lose it against Arsenal.)

Pretty sure it has MLS squads, just not the new ones from this season. Timbers and Whitecaps are probably around, they just will have last year's rosters and won't be in the MLS.

I played this a few years ago, you can play with some pretty obscure squads. I built some team from the Indian league up and won the Asia Champions League. Played Man U in the Fifa Club World Cup. That did not end well.

Funny enough, I wasn't even expecting MLS squads. I'm trying to broaden my horizons a bit with footy and getting to know the Euro players more.

You can play in almost any league. Like if you can think about it and it's any level of notable, it's there. They don't have USL though.

I run like 45 leagues in my sim just so I can never be bad enough to not get a job.

Yeah, I run alot of leagues also so you get a wider variety of players/ they'll actually develop and change.

Okay, I give. I'm trying this out and starting out as a young and totally inexperienced manager because that's what I am.

Only problem... I have NO idea what I'm doing! A little help for the noob?

Okay... Let's back up here a bit. I get how to play the game.

I know soccer, but my knowledge extends to World Cup and that's about it. Is there any suggestions of teams that would be appropriate starting points, or perhaps a league that I could look into that would be a nice place to start my managerial career in?

I understand basic tactics, since I did at least play soccer when I was a kid. But playing a position and using it for a whole team are two different things. I like to play a constant moving type of team. Would sticking with the normal 4-4-2 be ideal for me? I also like to usually attack until I get the lead, and then play counter style after that fact if that helps any ideas out there.

Any other assistance would be great.

My bad for going simple. Getting RTFM kinda makes sense.

Play a formation that matches whatever personnel you've got. If you have AMC's, AMR's, AML's, and DM's, and only one top striker, you have to play 4-2-3-1. Only play 4-4-2 if you have strikers you can rely on if one gets hurt.

Run a 3-4-2-1!

Okay, now I know you are just throwing stuff out there, but what's so great about the 3-4-2-1 style? I'm getting that there are 3 defenders, you have 4 mid fieldiers still, but I'm guessing that's 2 AM (whatever AM stands for, RFTSM time) and a striker? Am I right on that?

So I should stick more to whatever I have, rather than come up with my own tactics early on? Probably because I can't transfer in the talent, right? Aw... I wanted to have my own unique style.

Speaking of transfers, should I be aggressive on that front if I can bring in young good talent to the team?

I decided to start the game from unemployment like I currently am and work my way up.

Well from unemployment, I had Mexican options, but I discounted those, since I don't speak Spanish. Which left me with two clubs from England's npower league 2 - Hereford or Lincoln. Its a tough decision to make, because Lincoln's a little all over the place in terms of age, but Hereford's just starting to have most of its players hit its target. Though the one advantage Hereford has on Lincoln is that it also has Liverpool allowing some of its talent down without any costs. While Lincoln must work with itself.

I eventually decided to go with Lincoln. I want a challenge, and that certainly would be a challenge. Its also predicted to be dead last in the league, so might as well, eh?

So with that said, this is the roster I've got to work with:

GK - Paul Musselwhite - 41
GK - Joe Anyon - 22
GK - Nick Draper - 17
D (R) - Paul Green - 22
D (R) - Cian Hughton - 20
D (L) - Jamie Clapham - 34
D (L) - Joe Anderson - 20
D (C) - Adam Watts - 21 - Currently injured
D (C) - Moses Swaibu - 21
D (C) - Kern Miller - 18
D (C) - Jack Davies - 16
DM - Adifane Noussoura - 17
M (C) - Scott Kerr - 28
M (C) - Clark Keltie - 26
M (C) - Josh O'Keefe - 21
AM (R) - Sam Turner - 16
AM (RL), ST - Gavin McCallum - 22
AM (L) - Albert Jarrett - 25
AM (L) - Mustapha Carayol - 19
ST - Drewe Broughton - 31
ST - Delroy Facey - 29
ST - Ben Hutchinson - 22

From the looks of it there, I've got at least 4 players who can play striker, I've got 4 attacking midfielders, and only a single defensive midfielder. With my team like this, I probably should design a scheme that attacks a lot, right? So I can utilize my personal best.

AM= Attacking mid
DM= Defensive mid
ST= Striker

The (R) (L) in parentheses signify where on the field they play best at. Some players are ambidextrous and can play (RL) but for example if you're heavily right-footed you're going to be a (R) mid. Size matters for this as well; you typically want bigger guys in the middle and faster, agile guys on the wing.

I haven't played Football Manager before, just offering up what little strategy I know from watching footy the last few years.

Thanks VX! Stuff like this helps me out. Much appreciated.

I've got around less than 70kish to play with on the transfer market. Should I go after some new players? My budget for the team sucks though...

Well, just had my first game as Lincoln against my first friendly opponent's picked for me by the game (I set my own up later, but it gave me this one surprisingly). Hi Newcastle United!

I actually managed to have a good game against them. They worked their asses off. Sadly, I couldn't have Chris James (my biggest transfer) join the club as he was away on international duty, but the team made up for it without him.

It was quite a back and forth affair, surprisingly. I'm not sure how, but the team put on a huge effort. We had so many first half plays that could have gone in, but I was happy to walk away with the game tied at the half.

The second half was more of the same back and forth affair, with me cheering on my Imps, until the 70th minute when United decided to just gun at me, and I will say if it wasn't for my masterful plan of putting Clapham in as sub instead of a starter, it would've all been for naught! When the 88th minute hit and United basically went "screw defense" because the Imps are a lowly npower league 2 team, I turned my strategy into counter and soon we began getting all over their mistakes. When 90 minutes were up and we had an extra two minutes of stoppage time added, I began to worry if we could hold out, but as we pressed in on another mistake, Boughton got taken down. It was a free kick and I was thinking we could make something special happen.

Boy did something special happen. Steve Kerr, lines up for the free kick. But instead of sending it towards someone at the goal, he just sends it to the goal himself. Ainwick flails at the 70 foot shot, but somehow it goes off of him and in, and incredibly, we're up one to nil on Premiership team! Woo!

I think the refs forgot to look at the time, because we played yet another two more whole minutes, because of how stunning that goal was. What a win!

I can't play with the shitty teams because I like the transfer market too much, particularly building a team of superstars. At small clubs you have neither the money nor the influence to bring in the big guns.

Formation-wise, I like 4-2-3-1 because it's balanced. No formation is strong or weak against it, and vice versa. I put the two wingers as Inside Forwards on the tactics screen, so it's almost like playing with three or four strikers even though there's only one guy dedicated up front. I'm at Bayern Munich, though, and that's how they play because they have two of the most dangerous IFs in the world in Robben and Ribery.

The search is your friend. There are like a million different filters so you can find exactly what you're looking for. Use that to your advantage.
