General Horror Films & TV Discussion Thread

Meh. I dig the first two, but nothing else in this franchise has risen above "it's fine for what it is"
Saw this the other day. Super middle of the road. I literally can't remember anything about it. It's too bad, too, because it was a pretty interesting franchise, prior.

After watching this I hope HIM makes all the $$. Marlon Wayans is just so wholesome.

Some good recommendations in this one. Also @Big Papa Paegan GWAR is in this video. My picks (well, a few since there's several I could go with) would include "Boxer's Omen" (insane stuff Hong Long Horror from Shaw Bros Studio) Kiyoshi Kurasawa's "Cure" (don't know if it's scary, but the mood is extremely bleak and unsettling"), "The Cat" (the man who directed "The Story of Ricky" presents "The Cat From Outer Space" and a bit of "ET" mixed with all kinds of crazy shit) and "All the Colors of the Dark".

Doing my best James A. Jenese impression... It's Halloween October, Motherfuckas!"

So as has become my annual tradition, October 1st is kicking off with the 4K of Hocus Pocus.

Looks pretty entertaining (BAH GAWD A SANTA MASSACRE), and much more similar in spirit to the 1984 original than the remake that came out in the 2010's called Silent Night. Love that they got my guy Corey from Halloween Ends to play the killer. I didn't like Halloween Ends, but he really did well with that character until they discarded him for Michael vs Laurie Part 36.

Saw a couple trailers before Black Phone 2 that looked intriguing (including the above Primate). 1st one up was The Housemaid and the 2nd one was The Bride (directed by Maggie Gylenhaal and has Christian Bale) based off Bride of Frankenstein.

The Black Phone 2 7/10
I was higher on this probably than most people but I also was aware before going in of the direction it leaned towards. This one did lean heavily on Gwen's character and Finny did feel kind of behind the scenes but it also made more sense to have Gwen be the lead with the areas it went towards while keeping some of the "mystery" element from the first. This is a bit more lore-focused and there aren't many jump scares/scares in general but Ethan Hawke is still great as The Grabber and it did a great job of utilizing the singular location it ended up at.

My main nitpicks are the separation of "dream" vs. reality (felt kind of studio mandated but the crew managed to make it unique anyway) and the fact that Finny and Hawke's The Grabber are kind of limited in their screen time. Some of the writing was also kind of missed opportunity e.g. Gwen's dealing with Barbara was entertaining in a catty back & forth manner but basically was just 2 scenes worth.

I still prefer the original but think this was a solid enough follow up that can hold up on its own for the most part.

I think Housemaid is more of a thriller and looks similar to me to movies like Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Pacific Heights, and Single White Female. Looks really fun actually. I dig trashy movies like this.

Apparently, this opens on the same day as "Ready or Not 2" and I am currently annoyed there's no longer a theater where I live because I totally wanna do a double feature of these two. Maybe wait until they are on-demand.

I've heard some minor hype around this one from Curry Barker named Obsession coming in May.

Welcome back "good marketing for horror movies" (this one's for a film called "Undertone". The trailer is supposed to drop tomorrow)

"Primate" is a movie with people doing stupid things that would fall apart at the most basic level of scrutiny. If you can get past that-it's really fun. It's got a good understanding of suspense and location, doesn't waste it's time with metaphors or that like, is funny when it needs to be and is a rare R rated horror movie that actually is as gory as they say (there's one scene in particular that's both gnarly as hell and darkly hilarious)

more importantly it’s under 90 minutes. no sense in bloating the movie out when you have a ludicrously simple premise. get in smash brains and get out before you wear out yourself, thank you primate.

Silent Night Deadly Night 2025 was a blast and imo as good if not better than the 1984 movie. Rohan Campbell was fantastic, and I hope he continues to stay in the horror genre. I really liked Rudy Modine as well, and her chemistry with Campbell carried the movie. The gore was fantastic and this was so much better than the Malcolm McDowell remake from a decade ago. Movie freaking moved too. I could see the third act and the changes annoying some of the older fans of the franchise and the ones that love the 1984 version, but I thought they really worked. Third act and ending was insane in the right ways for me. I really want to watch this in a double feature with Eli Roth's Thanksgiving during the Holidays later this year.

7.5/10

Dracula: A Love Story – 7/10.

I’m biased towards vampires + Besson movies but this was pretty good. The set designs and especially the costume designs were fantastic (I’d argue the costuming is borderline Oscar worthy). The story was solid and very ‘Dracula’ as expected with a lot of acting carrying the movie, not a surprise. Caleb Landry Jones was great and Matilda De Angelis as Maria, was equally a memorable performance/character.

The main flaws were that it does get a bit draggy/long and the design of Vlad was kind of hard to take (partly because Oldman as Dracula is so iconic and hard not to be compared to). There are also decisions (the gargoyles and their effects) you’ll either be on board with or not, not deal breakers but noticeable. I did really enjoy the perfume being a pheromone-like draw and enthralling people all around Vlad though, I thought that was a unique and creative addition to the Dracula mythos film wise.

I think this is the kind of movie that’ll perform better on streaming and be a “hit” among viewers who liked stuff like Nosferatu, Frankenstein, etc.
