Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

Huey Lewis went to Cornell. That's all I really have to add.

Although I agree with the topic.

They certainly have a lot of recognizable songs. Even having never willingly listened to Huey Lewis and the News, I can still name roughly ten or so of their timeless classics. But because I don't subscribe to the notion that it's hip to be square, I would never admit to liking any of them. I guess I kind of like the part of "The Heart of Rock and Roll" where he runs down a list of American cities, but that's as much as you're getting from me.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Let's open a can of worms. If Huey Lewis and The News had written and performed "Ghostbusters" instead of Ray Parker, it would have been...

I was just thinking about these dudes last night and watched the videos for "Do You Believe In Love" and "If This Is It". If I were to make a list of my favorite '80s top 40 songs, the former would certainly be in the Top 10.

Former TOTSMer Walmart Patron was a big fan. Whatever happened to that dude? Did he make the switch? His un-ironic absolutely awful taste in music was somewhat refreshing.

I think that might be due to the fact that The News were Costello's backing band on My Aim is True. Talk about trading down.

HEY PAUL............. Try getting a reservation at Dorsia's now you stupid bastard!

A couple of years ago I saw Huey Lewis & the News at the California state fair. It was free with paid admission to the fair, and that was pretty much the only reason I went to the fair in the first place. They put on a damn good show for it being a free show at the fair. It was pretty sweet seeing masses of people that had no idea that they were doing a show, walking by and realizing it really was Huey, and then stopping to enjoy the show.

NoCalMike being a Huey Lewis fan is pretty out of left field, isn't it.

I don't have any Huey Lewis on my music drive. Sometimes I think I do because I do have a folder called "Sports by Huey Lewis and the News," but that's just where I keep my mp3s of "Brass Bonanza" and "Roundball Rock."

I'm now feeling this sentiment expressed in the thread title. I've listened to Sports three times today!

FAKE EDIT: I apologize for bumping a thread featuring people quoting American Psycho and post from Psycho Penguin.

Though "Honky Tonk Blues" is pretty bad. It reminds me of when some random children's show would have a musical number that would approximate a popular style.

It's pretty likely that it wouldn't still be as popular today as it would have been in the 80's, unfortunately. Not because it would've been bad, per se, but I think that it being Ray Parker's biggest hit and only remembered song is part of its charm. If Huey Lewis had done it, it would be like the Kenny Loggins stuff: still fondly remembered, but not quite as outright adored.

If Huey Lewis & the News had written & performed it rather than Ray Parker, it would have been different song. Yeah, I know the Parker tune lifts the melody of "I Want a New Drug," but that doesn't mean anything here. I don't get what Mattdotcom was obliquely suggesting.

They will be playing Citifield next year. Every year, The Mets have 4 post game concerts, and next season they announced that Huey Lewis and the News will be one of the 4.
