I Just Watched... (Movies/TV/DVD)

Finally watched Becky @Big Papa Paegan and that was just as much fun. I actually think it had better directing, editing, more gore (I had to turn away at the eyeball scene lol), and cinematography but the acting, story, and sequel was just more fun as a whole. I was surprised just how effective Kevin James was though as the lead bad guy, him having that physical build definitely helped IMO.

6/10 bordering 6.5/10.
Like I said, I think Wrath is the better of the two, but they're both fun b-movie revenge flicks. Lulu Wilson should have a solid career ahead of her, even if she's mostly in genre fare.

Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die is a delightful and fun time at the motion pictures. In the wrong hands this could have gone poorly but it’s a great satire and hilariously acted by Sam Rockwell and many others.

They managed to make topics like school shootings and AI very entertaining.

Watched The Curve (aka Dead Man's Curve) from 1998 starring Matthew Lillard, Keri Russell, Michael Vartan, and Randall Batinkoff.

It's solid albeit more of a very black comedy (Lillard's a standout and Batinkoff is memorable as a prick). I think Vartan's the weakest as he's the straight man but has too much of a vanilla, wooden "teen" actor vibe to not hold himself up well opposite Lillard and Batinkoff. He actually was giving me 3rd rate Guy Pearce in Memento vibes just without the acting ability. I think if the acting was a little stronger and the plot had more going on, it'd have done better but there's a reason it's largely forgotten.

The plot is solid (2 roommates try to get their 3rd member to commit suicide so they can get 4.0 grade point averages) and it's very.... late 90s dark teen movie in an era when you had stuff like Cruel Intentions, The Rules of Attraction, etc. It's better than Dead Man on Campus (which also released in 1998 whereas this went straight-to-video) but is far less memorable in terms of characters.

Most of the way through "Southland" S1 since it got added to Netflix here. Seems pretty good so far.

Finished this and really liked it. I wish it had got a proper ending as it felt like it ended on sort of a cliffhanger.

I decided to finally watch "NYPD Blue" and I'm most of the way through S1 now. I think it's pretty good but I'm not getting all-time great cop show from it like a lot of people say. "Hill Street Blues", "The Wire", and "Homicide" are all better just to name a few.

Gonna be catching this tomorrow. Excited to see it.
Project Hail Mary 9/10

Fantastic movie though it did feel its length at times. Ryan Gosling was amazing, the inter-cutting of backstory with what was going on in the present was great, and there were a lot of laughs in my packed screening. Visuals were insane at times (as expected with this kind of a space movie tbh) and there was also a lot of genuine tension.

May not be a movie I'd watch often but highly recommended to see in IMAX/Theater.

@Hawk 34 you had said you'd be curious what I'd think once I got to Smits on the show. Huge improvement. Caruso was terrible, which makes sense since he didn't want to be there. The whole show improves once he leaves.

Working my way through some actor back catalogs so I watched Robin Williams in Jakob the Liar from 1999. Solid movie with a good Williams performance and a really great sub-cast behind him. Jakob hiding a Jewish girl who escaped a train early on gives them a sweet little connection and helps explain Jakob's leaning on the "radio" myth that gathers greater steam around the ghetto while there's a lot of little Jewish moments that help sell the humor and vibe of the movie.

So I finally got around to the Toxic Avenger remake.

It was...alright? I guess? It felt like Macon Blair wasn't quite sure if he wanted to do it in the classic Troma (ridiculous and hammy but played oddly straight) or as an overt comedy or as some sort of family drama, and the overuse of CG for the gore effects was a major bummer.

On the upside, though, the cast was clearly having a blast, and anything that gets Taylour Paige more work is a net positive.

5/10

Ranking all of them...
1. Citizen Toxie: the Toxic Avenger part IV (7/10)
2. The Toxic Avenger original (6.5/10)
3. The Last Temptation of Toxie: the Toxic Avenger part III (5/10)
4. The Toxic Avenger remake (5/10)
5. The Toxic Avenger part II (4/10)

Apparently, Troma released a re-cut of 2 and 3 into one 2-hour movie that closer resembles the original plan, and even got Ron Fazio (voice of Toxie in 2 and 3) to come back for a new voiceover. It's called Mr. Melvin, which means they kept the "Toxie sells out" plot from 3 intact...which is good, because that was probably the best part of it.

Finally watched The Housemaid and it was a lot of fun. 7/10

Good acting and a fun throwback to the 80s/early 90s "sexy thrillers" of that era. Also some solid gore at times.

On Saturday, we did a double feature of both the Accountant (2016) and the Accountant 2 (2025).

The first is the better movie, overall, but the second is both much more accurate in its portrayal of ASD (which is odd to say since it seems to play it much more for comedic effect) and much more fun.

Affleck is still so underrated as an actor because he always comes across like a dickhead, but the guy gets it every time there's a camera on him. Bernthal is one of the best character actors working because he always feel authentic in any role he has, but that's nowhere near a hot take. What surprised me the most is how great their chemistry together is.

First is probably a 7.5/10, second is somewhere between 7/10.
