Kamala's Random WCW Bullshit thread

RheinTundo might have been the most boring team possible.

So the more WCW Bret I catch the more annoyed I am. He was a killing it as a character even if the booking was nonsense. But I swear you can see the final gasp of hope fade away once he lost the jacket.

It's sort of surprising George Scott didn't pick Patera up in early 89 given his past success in MACW. Patera and Flair were roommates in their early days so even Flair could have brought him in after Scott is fired as well.

Big John Studd was on the short list of guys who almost came over in late 88. Supposedly that was tied to the MACW days too.

Chi Town Rumble could've been so much more. Big John Studd vs The Mighty Wilbur and a main event of Ric Flair barely retaining the World title when Ken Patera misses a charge into the corner and runs his shoulder somewhat near the ring post.

I remember one of the first Apter mags I ever bought was hyping a Billy Jerk/Patera feud in the Portland territory. This was late 1990, as bad as Patera was in 88 I can only imagine how bad those matches must have been

IIRC they had a match in the Herb Abrams UWF that was bad even by Abrams UWF standards

Studd/Sting interests me just because it would be a total mess but could do good things for Sting and I think Studd probably has a somewhat less-shitty final run if he's working heel. Otherwise Studd, even in his prime, wasn't good. Patera kinda makes more sense since you can do shit with the Varisty Club and I kinda morbidly want to see 89 Rick Steiner vs Ken Patera.

You know who I wish was around then? Bundy. I think he could've had some great stuff with a few guys and he fits the NWA better than a lot of monsters.

Portland, OR – Sports Arena – January 12, 1989 (2,000)
Mike Golden defeated Al Madril
Carl Styles defeated Rex King
Steve Doll & Scott Peterson defeated the Russian Assassins
Buddy Rose & the Grappler defeated the Junkyard Dog & Ivan Koloff
Dick Murdoch defeated Col. DeBeers via disqualification
NWA World Champion Ric Flair defeated Sting; Roddy Piper appeared before the match and shook both men’s hands
Lex Luger, NWA TV Champion Rick Steiner, & Top Gun defeated NWA Tag Team Champions the Road Warriors & Ray Candy

--
Piper playing 4-D chess as he seeks a new contract from the WWF while teasing the NWA with possibly signing. (And helping Don Owens along the way)

---

DeBeers and Murdoch needed a black ref

I like seeing Madril and the Southern Rockers on the card, though.

Wtf does Ivan and JYD as a team look like? Bonding over chains?

They even got a ppv match vs the Russian Assassins, one of whom was invariably Jack Victory. I think Paul Jones factored into it a bit but mostly shared love of chains.

JYD was subbing for Nikita who was dealing with his wife dying.

Died at only 26

I couldn't find the Apter mag pic of him holding her on the couch

Not quite as memorable as the previous but that really speaks to Clash 17's significance because this has the p famous Cactus Jack vs Van Hammer falls count anywhere match that goes outside into a livestock exhibit, Jesse Ventura's WCW debut, and Steiners vs Vader/Mr Hughes as the opener.

Was the last Clash for about a half a year as WCW made the biggest push yet towards monthly premium lives.

My brother recorded that Clash and it was the only show from that era we had on tape (well we did have 16 and 20 on tape at one point and he unforgivably taped over them) so I watched it a lot as a kid. The Cactus/Hammer match and the main event were my favorites. Unfortunately the debut performance of "I'm a Freebird, What's Your Excuse?" is omitted.

Memorable ads during the broadcast included Metroid II, SNES (with Paul Rudd), Big Red gum and promotion for a TBS airing of The Amityville Horror and the "All in the Family Family Tree" - a two-hour block consisting of AITF, Maude, the Jeffersons and Good Times.

We were watching scrambled so I believed my brother when he told me that Pillman said "I respect you, fag." But I was pretty confused when they showed the footage on TV. Why did he call him a boogerman?

This seems like a Kramer-Frank Costanza bit and I love it.

Kamala: "Baron!"
Brody: "Bird!"
Kamala: "BARON!"
Brody: "[exasperating after forgetting the line for several seconds] BIRRRRD!"

He should be going jihad on PN Newz and the rap music.

Brad Rheinghans is perhaps the most surprising guy to not at least get a random WCW Sat night match in 1993 given ATM Eric always talks glowing about him and Brad was messing around with NJPW.

Hell, even Hogan respected him so a 1994 gig working in the proto power plant training guys when he's not messing with the NCAA/Olympians doesn't seem out of the question.

Then again Brad was 40 in 1993 so that's already past due date for wrasslin' in the era.

He could've gotten under a hood and joined the Dungeon.

"Fun" episode of Between the Sheets this week as they cover the 1999 Nitro where Flair is hunted down by the nWo copter and beaten down in a dessert while the announcers can magically see none of it.
Nitro has 2 workrate friendly matches (Beniot/Malenko vs Finlay'Squire Dave and Malenko/Beniot vs Enos and Dick Slater....no... Wayne Bloom....no.... Scotty Riggs!? Oh ok.... But Meltz thinks the long matches were booked to kill the ratings and justify not pushing Malenko/Beniot up the card. (Really in hindsight Malenko had already peaked and Dean was already 38 here)

Blitzkrieg is buried for not knowing how to work (I recall him being a breath of fresh air in the era)

Bret Hart vs Will Sasso was the compromise after WCW signed a contract with Fox/Mad TV to have it be Piper/Sasso vs Bret/Bischoff or somesuch but plans and power players changed and WCW tried to scrap the whole thing.

Nash was still complaining backstage that Hogan was knee capping his ability to book younger guys up the card. (Nitro was technically headlined by an impromptu really really washed Piper vs Hogan World title match.)

Goldberg was set to appear on Leno the following Friday where he would challenge Steve Austin to a match.

Nash told him that he was planning behind Vince McMahon's back to do a worked shoot with Nash and Goldberg fighting Austin and Shamrock.
---
The NBA had been on strike and WCW was supposed to get at least 1 special to fill time with no NBA. I believe the guys said Feb 14th was supposed to be the date, so it would have gone head to head with the Austin vs Vince PPV match. (Bischoff had promised to build the show around Hogan and Savage while talking to the NBC execs)

Given the shitty random match generator that was booking Nitro (Hammer vs Kenny Kaos was among the classics from the week prior) and the political power plays involved I wonder what WCW on NBC would have looked like?
Hot storylines were nWo black and white B-team imploding. Rey/Konnan vs Nash/Luger etc Flair vs Hogan DDP vs Big Poppa Pump and Bigelow vs Goldberg

How's Nash's status in WCW now that Dusty has taken over booking in 1991?

Pro on WGN – 2/9/91 –
Brad Armstrong, Tim Horner, & Terry Taylor defeated Master Blaster Nash, Rip Rogers, & Pat Rose at 9:10 when Armstrong pinned Rogers with the side Russian leg sweep; during the ring introductions, Master Blaster Nash was referred to as Kevin Nash in the on-screen graphic; late in the contest, the bell accidentally rang

Heh, three months after Rhodes worked with Undertaker who Ole'd let go. Could've skipped Oz and Vinnie Vegas, cut him in '91 and Nash gets on the tenure track as DiBiase's bodyguard 2 years sooner.
