Listening to Number One songs through the years

American Idiot is the ultimate John Kerry-era, self-righteous left-wing 16-25 album (done by douchebags in their late 30s-early 40s). It's really interesting. The two ten minute songs ("Jesus of Suburbia" and especially "Homecoming") are the best things Green Day has ever and will ever do. Part of why I liked it at the time was that they aped the Who so much at times I couldn't help but enjoy it.

Mid '00s were peak of my classic rock that rocks phase too. I really should've enjoyed American Idiot for what it was since it is one of the last classic rock that rocks albums to come out.

I love how the Vines were touted as the standouts in the "The" era (White Stripes, Hives, Strokes) then went on to have the least amount of success. I'm actually shocked the Strokes became as successful as they were. I remember being the least impressed with them in '02.

I know KoRn plugged away as a smaller arena level act until '05/'06 (and made their only SNL appearance during that era, which seemed really odd) but by the mid '00s, Linkin Park was just quickly inching towards becoming a straight up pop rock act, Limp Bizkit was on hiatus, Crazy Towns of the world were broken up.

Ugh, fail on my part I meant Bring Me to Life I was mainly basing it on the Billboard Top 100 charts when you look at 1999-2008 there's a clear period where that "rock" style was emerging into the mainstream.

The Vines lead singer was first example I can remember of someone acting like a total ass (and maybe getting arrested) then blaming it on his Aspergers.

Perhaps even more regrettably, I feel like The Vines directly led to Jet, who were actually neck and neck with Nickelback for most made fun of band for a few years in the mid '00s.

Jet frustrated me as a big Iggy Pop fan. I was the asshole who always pointed out that "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" ripped off "Lust for Life" and everyone (probably understandably) rolling their eyes at me. They've been mostly forgotten too.

Coming out of the gate so blatantly ripping off a rock critic icon like Iggy was a death knell for their cool factor. At least, wait until your second album to do that like Third Eye Blind did.

"Cold Hard Bitch" is honestly a bit of a guilty pleasure and one of those random songs I get stuck in my head at least once a month.

Jet were the worst. At least real luminaries like Keane and the Fray didn't steal everything.

Yeah. I don't think he isn't on the spectrum. I just being on the spectrum is a really poor excuse for (most) bad behaviors!

"Way Away" by Yellowcard was a big guilty pleasure of mine in the early '00s. I didn't care for "Ocean Avenue" as a whole but the violin gimmick did help them stand out.

I remember one of the first real friends I made in college was a big Snow Patrol fan. Talk about forgettable.

Vines guy was also big into just rockstar lifestyle, if I remember right. Combination of things. I seriously think that for every David Byrne or Gary Numan, there's a Vines guy. Speaking from the spectrum and from a position of enjoying excess once in a while.

That Interpol album still really holds up. Kind of a good cap on that era, unless my lines are crossed.

All my friends loved Interpol but I never got into them. I suppose there were worse Radiohead rip-offs, though.

Coldplay were definitely the worse of that group but yeah, never was an Interpol guy. I don't care what anyone says, Coldplay always sucked. Even when Parachutes came out.

I just remember being disillusioned as hell about pop music. Even looking through my own collection, there wasn't much to get excited about. I liked Radiohead, Belle & Sebastian, the New Pornographers. The Magnolia Electric Co. and Illinois are standout albums for me but it took years later to discover them.

Latter half of the decade I listened to a LOT of Belle and Sebastian, Tindersticks, TV On The Radio, LCD Soundsystem. All I can remember with any kind of vivid detail was my love for "Lazy Line Painter Jane" and "All My Friends," latter might be my favorite song of at least 2005-2010. Gotta check the lists. "Lazy Line Painter Jane" is just really, really good.

2006. I didn't mean I wanted James Blunt. Ridin' Dirty and Hips Don't Lie are good songs. I hated Justin Timberlake at the time but looking back, still can't stand him. Some artists are taking the excesses of the era and crafting them into honestly good music.

2007. Like Umbrella. But we also get T-Pain, so it's a wash.

2008. When were you f***ers planning to tell me Britney Spears put out an absolute banger of a song in 2008? She's older than me by eight days. So as long as Britney can be cool, there's still hope for me.

What's unusual is that songs keep trading #1. Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love" has three separate stints on top. Ditto "Whatever You Like" (T.I.) and "Live Your Life" (T.I. featuring Rihanna).

2009. Surprisingly liked Eminem's "Crack a Bottle," and "Poker Face" is iconic. Otherwise, really hope you like the Black Eyed Peas.

"Empire State Of Mind" came on the heels of the 2009 World Series. I have no tolerance for it.

The late 2000s was Britney's downfall, at least in terms of her personal life. Her marriage to K-Fed crumbled and she seemingly went crazy in the public eye (shaving her head among other things). She also had a critically panned performance at that year's VMA. "Piece of Mind" and "Gimme More" aren't her best work but I think most people appreciate "Blackout" more in hindsight. She was smart to erase the stink of BO the very next year by releasing the much more commercial acclaimed, Circus.
