I haven't played for so long that I don't know how to find that once abundant material used to make a warp cell. It used to be found everywhere in those big, blue pillars. Also, I need a new mining laser that I don't know how to find/make...AND a gauntlet thingy to access certain items. Also, all of the planets suck and there's no reason to try to build a base.

So I'm confused and just going to wait out a few more updates and start over, too.

You might benefit from restarting now, tbh.

The planets are much more versatile now as far as resources go. That being said, there is no real reason for a base other than to house stuff you've farmed, or to take shelter from storms, etc. But I think you kinda need to look at this game like it's Space-Minecraft. It's mainly mining and crafting for the fun of it. There was no real reason to build housing in Minecraft other than to store farmed stuff or take shelter at night from monsters. Though, in NMS, the ability to build bases on Freighters and store multiple purchase ships is a great addition.

I hope that they do flesh out the "purpose" of the game in a future update - maybe via the factions or something different with the story. If you explore enough you eventually come across bases that are overrun with almost Shoggoth-looking plants.. and their lore entries hint at something maddening and definitely Lovecraftian looming on the horizon. Would love to see that explored.

Now is a good time to jump on this if you've been waiting. I feel that this is the game that we would've had at launched, had Sony not pushed Hello Games to get it out the door a year before it was actually ready. Personally, I feel I've gotten my monies worth - I'm easy to please with games like this - and that these last three major updates are just gravy for me. The entire landscape of the game has changed with this update - that adds 30 hours of story as well as joint-exploration with other players (think asynchronous multi-player like spirits in Dark Souls).

Biomes/planet types have also been hugely expanded upon: http://kotaku.com/no-mans-sky-players-are-finding-cool-new-biomes-in-late-1797819525

Alright then. Now, I will put it back on the PS4 hard drive and start over. From what I've been seeing, it's getting to what it should have been if Sony hadn't pushed it out the door.

Most definitely. I said a fond farewell to my original save and have started over from scratch. Really digging the story so far, and the addition of system-wide economies. Super cool shit!

I've been interested in trying it out again, but I've been preoccupied with everything else I've got in the catalog. Maybe when Next comes out during the summer when there's nothing really going on. I've got GoW in 8 days, that's going to take up everything.

The NEXT update is coming out July 24th along with the XBONE release. I'll probably jump back into it too.

You gotta give these guys credit for sticking with it and not just folding as soon as the negative criticism came down (*cough*Mass Effect*cough*).

Are they introducing a third-person camera or was that just something for the trailer? Or was there always a third-person camera option?

This will be the first time we're able to see our characters, so third person is new to this update. Pretty hyped for it!

Played about an hour last night, starting a new character. There's definitely much more of a "tutorial" that integrates base building and their new system of refining basic elements. You certainly seem to be pushed forward to the main loop of the game a lot faster.

Man, they really have completely reinvented this game. Planets just look more organic and varied (I basically explored Hoth for an hour or so today), there's some cool animals (I found a big green winged thing with the head of a stegosaur) and you aren't hunting as much for the more basic elements you need because they are EVERYWHERE.

I wiped all of my old saves and started anew for this. The planet I woke up on has rings and it's fucking awesome. Very unforgiving atmosphere, so I can't wait to get the fuck off of it, but it looks really beautiful.

Me last night:

"Hmm, wonder what these Whispering Eggs are? They seem to be only found around ruined buildings and terminals that talk about some really bad shit happening but I should be**BIOLOGICAL HORROR DETECTED** fiAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT!"

Definitely explore caves for Humming Eggs though. I just found like a dozen in one cave system and they give you pearls that sell for about 50k each.

Downloaded this after a couple friends jumped back in. It's fun and absolutely beautiful, gameplay still seems a bit limited and focused on overt grinding, but I did start (and win) my first dogfight. Bonus? It was 3v2, odds on their side.

Not bad and I'm sure once I get a better grip on it that it'll be a favorite.

Getting a freighter early is great because now I can collect a bunch of junker ships from distress beacons, just repair them enough so they can fly to the station and flip them to some rube Korvax or Gex for their fully functioning ship. It's a lot faster and cheaper than repairing every single system and inventory slot.

I also went through a black hole and ended up on the other side of the universe in a system where everything is glowing green.

Figured I’d start a replay. After about 2 hours in I couldn’t find what the hell I was supposed to do. Fell reading very recent posts online... my game essentially started out bugged and I wouldn’t be able to go any further. Maybe I’ll try again in another six months.

BEYOND update coming this Summer. Apparently heavy emphasis on revamping online and multiplayer:

Also a part of this update will be a VR mode. Finally, my PSVR is going to get used.

This got me to start a new game again. It's amazing how much they've done to this thing.
