Scream aka Scream 5

Honestly, I'd love to see the creativity it took to retcon Stu dying and staying under the radar but being able to recruit a cult. If they can do it in a way that's believable, that could be fun.

The original plan for Scream 3 was Stu recruiting high school students to do just that. It was confirmed by Matthew Lillard. It was cancelled due to Columbine.

The number of Easter eggs in that small teaser is kinda cool. Apparently there is a few killer mask types already leaked, meaning maybe a few killers or none of these mofos in the scene are in fact one of or the actual ones.

There's been pics online otherwise shown of a more tattered and old mask version of a previous sequel (or original) mask being used by the killer in this one. So can speculate if that means an old character is returning under the mask or where/how the new killer gets it ...

Pro:
-Bringing the killer to the big city is the smart route. Most slasher flicks utilize the "small town" trope to show that you aren't safe, even in a tight knit community, and there's only a handful that I've seen take place in a city. The closest this series has come to this kind of "danger can be anywhere" was the second one, IMO, because of how many unfamiliar faces were weaving in and out.
-Good on them for carrying on with the survivors of the first, because I want to see one of them dead.

Con:
-Carrying over the survivors of the first, because holy fuck that lead was awful and actively made that movie worse than it should have been.

It’s a good looking trailer, but I haven’t liked a sequel yet.
I'm the same way. There are elements of each sequel I like, but they are mostly smug messes that think they are more clever than they are.

This looks fun, but my hopes aren't high. I like that it looks meaner and more serious.

Seems to be teasing a supernatural element (which was also got a mention in 3). I'm intrigued to see what they do with this and how they intend to set this killer apart from the others. While I wasn't over the moon with 3's reveal of Roman, I felt it was a better payoff than the character reveals in 4 and 5.

Don't get me wrong, Amber straight shooting someone in the face for her reveal was good framing but the motive shit felt lacking. The only good thing about Jill's reveal in 4 was Emma Roberts kicking her own ass for an alibi.

I hope for less gun play. I get there was a gun in the first one. But, you go from a horror movie to an action one quick with too much of that stuff. The reason so many horror movies are set in small towns/rural areas is because it's so much easier to create that slow burning tension. Not sure it will work great in a big city setting. Don't have high hopes for this one.

Got my ticket to see Scream VI for 11:40 AM on Saturday. Very hyped... I've only seen the 1st teaser trailer so I feel like I'm mostly going in blind.

Watch the killer be Sidney this time.
I almost wonder if that's going to be it. Neve was rumored to be not involved in this for awhile, and then rumors came up that she may still end up being a part of it in some way, shape, or form. I guess we will see but if so, that will be a spoiler that will probably get posted on social media far too quickly afterwards to the masses.

I'm planning on going to some early special fan event tomorrow at 5pm (probably a brief prologue of the previous films, if its anything like the Scream 5 fan event), and its in 3D. Very interesting choice to go 3D with this one.

From what headlines I've seen so far in reviews on this, it sounds like generally so far its getting some serious praise. I've even seen a few days its the best since the original?

Just some more thoughts on the new film, I actually kinda feel like the Sidney character will appear in a post-credits scene more than likely. It's confirmed there is a scene after the credits, and since the word was that she wasn't involved in the crux of the film, I could see them making sure to secure her for the next one (already filming later this year!).

My guess is either somehow Stu comes back at the killer this time (I thought it was going to be him in part 5) or perhaps Billy's daughter from Scream 5 has a role as well, as that seemed to be hinted in the previous film? There seems to be at least two this time around, maybe more?

Yeah, but they said that about part 5, and that was the worst one of the series, soooo

I really can't stand Scream 2, but I think I'm in the minority there. Parker Posey carries 3 enough to put it over 2 for me.

Scream 2 is boring. Scream 3 was just bad (Jay and Silent Bob cameo? huh?). I remember not hating 4. Didn't see 5 yet.

2 is great until the car crash scene. 3 is bad but fun. 4 was great the first time I saw it but is just okay on rewatch. 5 is as bad as 3 but with the worst cast of the series so it's not as fun.

Just got out of it. I loved it, much campier and more tongue in cheek than 5 was. There are some parts that if you overthink, it’ll be stupid but just go along for the ride.

Also, I think it’s the best opening scene of the series outside of the shock value the original had. Definitely set the tone for a new type of movie.

I literally did the "Leo Pointing" meme when they namedropped Giallo movies and Dario Argento.

That opening was definitely the most inventive since the 1st one. A little more humor than 5 but I liked 5 and really liked this one. A lot of gory death scenes and I feel like they used Roger Jackson more in this one than they have in past films, which definitely helped. I do really enjoy the core foursome they've built up and they all feel like they're natural together much like Sidney/Randy/Dewey/Gale from the original. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as Samantha/Tara remain great casting choices as both are natural leads without feeling forced into the role in my opinion and it was great seeing Jenna get a lot more to do in this movie.

There were some weird script/edit moments where two characters would sit and talk about something serious then after just a few sentences they'd get interrupted by somebody... not sure if it was meant to be that way in the script or if those scenes just got edited down.

The reveal was kind of stupid but did fit with the "family" theme going on so I don't hate it necessarily.

I was never a huge Scream fan as I still think that's a very solid 7/10 and I think both 5 & 6 are on par with it. 7 to 7.5/10

I'll have to watch this again to see how it rates within the franchise, but I did have a pretty good time with it. From the vibe of the different asthetic from being in NYC primarily, it was different. I get they were trying to do a requel kinda of Scream 2 in that sense. The Jason Takes Manhattan easter egg was fun and there was alot of those a-ha moments in the script, similarily to all of the Scream films really. So alot of the formula was still there.

What I left thinking more than anything was that, in a way, this film felt a bit rushed in execution. It didn't have the flow and coherancy that most Scream films have in terms of keeping the story tight and focused. This film felt a bit thrown together, which seems possible given that they put this all together within a year after the release of part 5. I get why horror franchises do this, but I would much rather have these films released two years apart from each other so time it given to produce it adequately. And it appears Scream 7 will be tapped for around this same time next year as well.

One part about it is that I felt at least in the theater I was in, the 3d felt underwhelming. I think it was more where I saw the movie though, as it was a flat screen and not the curved screen that works better for presenting 3D effects.

Rankings now that I'm halfway through Scream 6:

1, 4, 2, 3, 6, 5

This learned nothing from the shit screenwriting mistakes of the last movie. Vanderbilt is a fucking hack and hasn't written anything worthwhile since Zodiac (which, even then, is more about the director and cast). Every single bit of clever plotting or dialogue is immediately spoonfed via shit dialogue, every decision the characters make is counter intuitive...just fuck this piece of garbage.

Like, if you're going to set up that a character carries a taser for defense purposes early on, then why doesn't it fucking show up at any of the other points where having some method of self defense would come in handy? "We gotta get out of here, there's one person with a knife and we're 5 people who can grab everything within reach to throw at them!"

This is a slasher flick where every single character needs to die. Craven would be ashamed of what's become of his series.

Well, at least the lead figured out how to act this go around. That's something worth noting.

4/10.

Does the Mindy character irritate anyone else? I've seen the actress in other things and she's good, but the character sounds so forced and unnatural when she's monologuing and doesn't feel like an actual person. Randy annoyed me too, but he had a dorky charm. Mindy is just grating in Scream 6 imo.

The movie as a whole was pretty uneventful tbh. It felt like no risks were taken. Melissa Barerra was a lot better though. And I liked Chad a lot more than in Scream 5.
