AT&T Lost Dog Commercial w/ Tyler Hansbrough

This commercial is very creepy. It stars Tyler Hansbrough, but nowhere is it mentioned that NBA Superstar Tyler Hansbrough stars in the commercial. I mean, even commercials with Michael Jordan would sometimes chyron NBA All-Star Michael Jordan at the bottom, and he's more internationally recognized than most heads of state. Are we expected to recognize Hansbrough without assistance? How are we supposed to know it's him without a Tar Heels jersey on his chest, blood on his face, and Dick Vitale on his nuts? He's simply presented as one white person among many white people who help find a lost puppy, except this dude is a college basketball legend now charged with the tall order of saving professional basketball in Indianapolis. Furthermore, it's really creepy that he's camped out on a 1st grader's porch waiting for her to arrive. Did he clear this with her parents and be like "hi, I'm NBA superstar Tyler Hansbrough. I found your puppy, and have I got a stunt in mind"? Shouldn't there be neighbors calling the cops or running at him with a blunt object asking if he's lost his damn mind? Why doesn't the girl recognize him? Was she just so happy to have her dog back that she didn't notice the famous athlete loitering in front of her house? Is she a Duke fan? Or are we supposed to believe that Tyler Hansbrough intentionally goes unidentified by producers and characters; that while we'd be browbeaten by all parties involved with the fact that the staged good deeds are being done by Jordan or Shaq or LeBron, Hansbrough prefers to toil in anonymity, using not his otherworldly basketball talents for good but merely the same social networking shit that the rest of us play with. Weird shit. I'd be happy if I never saw this again.

Kings Ransom Excerpt

This is an excerpt from tonight, and it looks really good. I will have to DVR this....and maybe the entire series.

And apparently, this is the creation of Bill Simmons. Well, he takes part credit for the idea, and having ESPN find these directors. Perhaps this can redeem him in our eyes.

Bill Simmons is one of many smarmy white guys who positions himself as someone who loves basketball and thus must have no respect for hockey, and he's taking credit for a Gretzky piece? Oh, ride a dick.

The effigy man wearing Daisy Dukes sounds like Owen Hart. Hmph.

He pitched the idea of this whole series of documentaries to ESPN, not just this one piece. I think he's getting an Executive Producer credit.

Saw that on another board. We all knew he had suspect judgment, but cheating on his wife with:

takes it to a whole other level.

Deadspin is taking this opportunity to post all the tips they've gotten from within ESPN of various other sexual harassment offenders.

This seems to be in revenge due to ESPN being uncooperative when they called them in September to confirm or deny that Phillips was about to get canned for behavior much worse than what Harold Reynolds was fired for.

This story has hit the news waves pretty big, as it was talked about on Headline News and The View. Not surprisingsly, Phillips asked for, and was granted, a leave of absence by ESPN.

Awesome. Probably just 5 good minutes, but whatever.

Also, he was decent on Colbert last time. I look forward to him being on there again.

I still enjoy Bill Simmons.

You know, he only gave up Kevin Appier, who was pretty fucking bad for the rest of his career, which only lasted two more years.

I'm hearing now that Steve Phillips is out permanently at ESPN, so I would like to say thank you, Deadspin.

Simmons was pretty good on PTI. He was a bit more informal than most of the guests, but he was also in studio, which usually helps.

He does know a lot about basketball.

It was kind of annoying how Kornheiser used his serious voice throughout the interview. Like whether or not the Thunder will be good this year is some grave conversation only real sports cognoscenti like themselves can discuss. It was so pretentious, and I usually like Kornheiser.

But Bill on Sportsnation was worse. Colin Cowherd screwed up the intro, further proving he shouldn't be hosting a show, and then they made Simmons sit through not one, but two dull segments where they tried to shot a bullet through his book. Bill actually got some good lines in, too, if only they would have let him talk. Michelle Beadle is the only saving grace of that show.

I don't hate Cowherd as much as most people do around here, but the "he shouldn't be hosting SportsNation" setiment is dead on. He has 16-20 hours a week when he can run his pretentious act on the radio. It just doesn't flow well on a 30 minute show.

Dave Dameshek's last podcast for ESPN is today. Sad that another one of the truly unique perspectives on sports goes away. He did say he would continue podcasting in some form next week, probably on Carolla's show, but it looks like ESPN really does want to stick to the noisy, typical football analyst guy kind of broadcasters.

A new measure for how I deal with boredom: I've begun measuring NHL fanbases by how many followers teams have for their respective official twitters. Some of the teams:

It's OK, they're expansion teams
Atlanta: 2,624
Phoenix: 3,438

Still don't know what those hashtags are
Carolina: 4,065
Colorado: 4,152
Colombus: 4,178
Minnesota: 4,679

Hat Twick
Dallas: 6,336
mighty Ducks: 6,663
Calgary: 6,731
St. Louis : 6,735
Boston: 7,307
L.A.: 7,674
San Jose: 8,735
Edmonton: 9,161

Tweet Victory
Chicago: 18,469
Detroit: 22,081
Montreal: 22,164

I thought Canada liked hockey
Maple Leaves: 4,375
Ottawa: 4.013

Also worth noting is who the official accounts follow. Most follow other NHL teams and the official NHL account, and then a seemingly random sampling of fans, usually for a total of around 70. Anaheim and Detroit are following 3,000+ people. The Sharks also follow notable accounts for other Bay Area teams. The Canadiens are following the Expos.
