"The $715 billion for the Defense Department is 1.6% higher than the $704 billion enacted for this year, but it would amount to a decrease of about 0.4% in real terms adjusted for inflation."

"The Pentagon’s budget proposal makes up the largest share of the $753 billion the White House envisions for national security programs. That includes defense-related funding to the Department of Energy, which maintains the nation’s nuclear weapons. The proposal represents an increase of about 1.7% from this year’s $741 billion in such national security funding."

Even without inflation these aren't large increases. The funding for maintaining the nuclear weapons is BADLY needed. If you've seen any of the studies about the state of the nuclear arsenal its fucking alarming. It also contains funding for climate change actions which are obviously going to be expensive to change over to.

Non defense spending is going up 16% percent btw. I'd love to see defense spending plummet but it will never happen. It is political suicide for any party.

Not so senile I guess.

The immigration thing was the first huge thing (there are others but that was the really big one) I had a problem with and he immediately backed down when it got a terrible reception. That's a lot more responsive than other POTUS's. It's extremely early days but he's off to a good start all things considered. I don't want to make any real judgements this early though. Not for at least 6 months for an early call.

It's one thing to go after tobacco companies for deliberately over-advertising menthols to black Americans (because they make up 80% of the user base and advertising is clearly geared toward them, right down to the "Kool" brand name), but banning a product outright because "it has a flavor" is so patronizing to me.

I lean against banning them outright even though menthol cigarettes are the most lethal stuff that's legal besides alcohol. Banning targeted advertising is an idea I'm fine with but that seems like it leads to a lot of slippery slope arguments with dunderhead libertarians.

I'm so square that the only thing that keeps me from being straight edge is sangría. I went a year without speaking to my biological father, because I was so opposed to his smoking habit. I broke up with a girl, back in my twenties, when I found out she smoked. And even I think this is stupid. If they're going to ban "flavored" cigarettes, they might as well ban all of them. And that sure as hell ain't happening; they'll succeed at banning guns, first.

Slap hugely abusrd taxes on smokes like we have on them in Canada and all the gross warning packages and watch it die out over the years. It takes a little while but couple with stringing laws about where people are allowed ro smoke it has a tremendous effect.

Staunch anti-smoker, I think this bill is a poor idea. I've grown to recognize that just because I don't like cigarettes, that doesn't mean the rest of the world needs to bend over to my whims. Leaders shouldn't over step their bounds, R or D.

Funny (to me) story about menthols:

One early iteration of my friend's band included a black man on drums and a dumb toothless redneck on bass. Redneck was smoking a cigarette one day, talking to a group of us, when Black Drummer Man comes up and says, "hey Redneck can I get a cigarette?" Redneck pulls a pack of Kools out of his pocket and says, "Here I always keep a pack of menthols on me since I know you people prefer them menthols." Black Drummer Man's eyes get that wide "the fuck did you just say?" disbelief, but not anger, look in them. I'm looking for the nearest hole to crawl into. Everyone else is doing some version of picking their jaws up off the ground or slapping their foreheads. Lead singer friend is the only one thinking and tries to salvage the situation, "well, you know Black Drummer Man, I think I did read somewhere that there is a disproportionate amount of black to white smokers that prefer Menthols." BDM's face returns to normalcy, he rubs his chin, and says, "Huh? interesting" takes a Kool, and awkward racist moment from Redneck finally went away. He wound up getting rid of the Redneck over time.

I should point out that BDM and Redneck did hang out outside of just gigs and most of the time rode together and got high preshow together. So it softens the blow a LITTLE to know they were friends with the awkward racist thing happened. Redneck dude is 100% the guy that would drop N bombs in white company and justify it because he has a black friend (he never said it around me, to be fair, it just wouldn't surprise me if he would have done it)

Anyway, off the top of my head I can think of 5 people in my entertainment friends group that choose Menthol variety for their nicotine fix. When Mrs. SFH gets to a certain level of drunk, that's her go to as well, if the bar is selling or a friend lets her bum. Hmm, maybe I should endorse the ban :p.

But in defense of republicans, that's like last week compared to the 1619 Project that they've whined endlessly about and tried to cancel.

If they have 10 GOP votes for the infrastructure thing, can they retry the voting rights bill via reconciliation?
