The Box Office thread

How much demand does the studio think is there for these Strangers movies? I liked Prey at Night well enough during my "unemployed and using Moviepass three times a week" era and I appreciated that the director is a huge Jim Steinman fan. But a sequel trilogy? Lay off the coke.

Fake edit: The last one came out 18 weeks ago!

And they shot them back to back while explaining the back story of the titular Strangers

Avatar 3 should eek out to 400 million domestic, but it's a huge drop frop Avatar 2 not just in America, but overseas where they really love the Avatar. It still did good numbers overall, but it's got to be worrisome somewhat from how much it dropped from Way Of Water.

Big Jim needs to make Avatar 4 feel like a different movie from the others or have a big gimmick or else it could flop because of how insane these budgets are. The shine of Avatar and whatever nostalgia people have seem to be wearing off. And, just to be clear, I like the first movie (Found the second to be napworthy though), so I'm not rooting for them to fail or anything. I do think doing another three hour plus movie was a mistake and Avatar 4 needs to be shorter and tighter.
I don't know if anyone has the balls to tell Cameron what to do so they'll continue to be these monstrosities.

"Wuthering Heights" made $82 million overseas, and "Send Help" barely dropping in numbers is impressive. "Nirvanna: The Band The Show The Movie" only played in 365 theaters, so that's an impressive showing (it got tons of solid word of mouth and mostly great reviews).

Next week is "Psycho Killer", "I Can Only Imagine 2", "How to Make a Killing" and "This is Not a Test". The week after is "Scream 7", "EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert", a wider release for "Pillion" and anime in "Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - The Beginning". People love the damn Ghostface. I do think it will drop more than 65% next weekend. Word of mouth from fans online is pretty mixed to bad.

Yeah, while the opening weekend is great (a lot of that is fans literally going to see the movie just because Neve Campbell's back as the lead) I expect a pretty steep drop into next weekend as word of mouth spreads more and even then, the WOM did have an impact on its opening weekend and I don't expect it to have great legs especially with Hoppers and Ready or Not 2 coming very quickly.

Even just this weekend from Friday to Saturday it dropped by almost $2,000 per theater and Sunday could be almost $2,000 more of a drop.

For comparison, Scream VI dropped by about $1,000 per theater Friday to Saturday on its opening weekend. Same for Scream 5, which dropped about $900 per theater from its Friday to Saturday opening weekend.

Scream is my junk-food horror franchise — I’ll watch every entry whether it’s good or bad. This one might be the weakest in the series… yes, even weaker than Scream 3 and the Gale Weathers weird looking bangs era.

"Hoppers" is the best Pixar debut since "Coco". "The Bride!" however, is WB's first outright bomb since "Mickey 17", and cost $90 million. I have a feeling it'll probably become more of a cult favorite down the line, as the general reception seems to be mixed. Also, that's a huge drop for "Scream 7", and "The Protector" is a new Mila Jovovich action movie that somehow escaped VOD purgatory.

Scream 3 is my guilty pleasure and I'll gladly watch it over Scream 2 any time. 2 is technically the better movie, but is so smug and annoying imo. Wes and Kevin Williamson and the rest of the writers thought they had the most clever and intelligent movie ever, and you could just feel the smarminess on the screen. Jamie Kennedy ruined Randy in Scream 2 and I couldn't wait until his death scene. And, it' probably the one time I didn't like Lauri Metcalf's performance. Way too wild eyed and hammy, even in her earlier scenes.

Also, I can quote the entirety of the Jay And Silent Bob cameo in Scream 3 in my head. Parker Posey also gives a top three performance in the franchise. This will be sacrilege, but Neve isn't in my top 3. I think Lillard, Posey, and Drew Barrymore gave the three best performances in any Scream movie. The first ten minutes of Scream is still the most effective and scary scene in the franchise, and Drew does the best acting of her career in that scene. Neve is very good in the first two movies, but honestly doesn't feel as fully realized as Casey Becker did in those first ten minutes. The parents acting was also really great and realistic. The mom's scream is horrifying. You forget how serious that opening scene is compared to the rest of the movie.

I'm one of the rare folks that only likes the first Scream, with my favorite sequel being part 4.

Hell yeah at the Demon Slayer movie getting re-released and still somehow making over $1 Million, lol.

Also glad I Can Only Imagine 2 dropping hard. The original somehow made $83 Million domestic. I'm fine with faith-based movies but I always get this kind of "pretentious" vibe (not unlike the Mega Preachers) that they are being sold as much for the faith element as the story/acting side.

Hardly surprised by The Bride eating shit. Kinda hard to tell who that one was made for.
Well, let me explain-every now and then, a director will make a movie that gets a lot of critical praise and even awards nominations or consideration (Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut "The Lost Daughter" got a few Oscar nods and was mostly loved by critics), so a studio gives them a lot of money to make a crazy swing/passion project that nowadays feels fewer and far between. Sometimes this works out ("One Battle After Another", "Sinners" or "Frankenstein"). Other times, it's either largely considered bad ("Don't Worry Darling") or a divisive movie that has its defenders but is also a bomb ("Mickey 17"). This one seems to be in the "divisive" category.

Either way, for good or for ill, I will always support the making of such wild creative swings, even when I don't like them ("Megalopolis" for example). In an era where everything is driven less by creative input and more by executives, we need that. Look at it like this-when Paramount fully takes over Warner Bros, don't expect movies like "Sinners" or OBAA, especially with a Trump toady like Dave Ellision in charge.

I am so out of the loop that I had literally not heard of that movie until I read an article about it this weekend. And the article I read said that there have reportedly been cases of people getting up and walking out of the movie?

It sounds like a movie that has like 5-8 different things it wants to do/tries to do and it just becomes a mashed together stew of disappointment so I could see people going in expecting X and walking out when it clearly isn't going to be that.

I always take "people walking out of movies" with a grain of salt as to me it's the equivalent of, "This film got a 15 minute ovation at Cannes/Toronto Film Festival" then flops with no Oscar buzz at all in theaters.

14.) Slanted (Bleecker Street) $617,000

"Undertone" made 2 million more than was projected and only cost $500,000 to make (A24 acquired it but didn't make it)

Next week is "Project Hail Mary" and "Ready or Not 2". The week after is "They Are Going to Kill You" and a wider release for "Mirrors". April 1st is "The Super Mario Brothers Galaxy Movie", and the 3rd is "The Drama" and a remake of "Cliffhanger". I have a feeling "Mario Bros" is going to be in the top spot until maybe that Michael Jackson biopic comes out on the 24th.

Scream 7 is lucky it had such a huge opening weekend because it's really struggled legs wise since.

I feel like this is Hoppers' window until SMB comes out whereas Ready or Not 2 is gonna take a big chunk out of Scream 7. I've heard Project Hail Mary could be a pretty big hit (Lord & Miller movies, Gosling as the star) but it's 2 & 1/2 Hours and a Sci-Fi movie so its reach may be somewhat limited.

I think the general audience really enjoyed Scream 6 and that helped Scream 7's opening weekend. Now, we will see if Scream 8 takes a dip after the negative to mixed reception from even the Scream fanbase. Scream 4 had the worst box office of the series, and I think a lot of that had to do with people being pretty negative on Scream 3.

I do think they really have to try to make a good movie next time and get someone good to direct it. Kevin Williamson is a great writer, but I don't think he's a very good director, so him bowing out for 8 leaves them in an interesting position.

They either should take the direction in the New Nightmare ultra meta direction and have a Ghostface stalk the irl actors from the movies, or start finally showing some balls and start killing off some beloved characters. Even though Dewey's death in Scream 5 was really stupid, I still liked the character growth he showed in his earlier scenes, and killing an important character elevated the stakes.

It's funny how Dave Elisson's blacklisting of anyone whose even mildly critical of Israel has in a sense backfired on this and CBS news, though he in no way is going to change (and makes Paramount buying Warner Bros even scarier IMO)
