Re: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

So, as expected, the "beta horrors" that people were experiencing were exactly that - beta horrors. Full game is now getting a lot of praise, especially at NeoGAF (the place where it was shit-talked the most). New content just announced:

Can't wait for console release.

I am liking it more now but still not sure if it's good enough for a monthly fee.

Re: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Sounds like group mechanics are non-existent. I didn't do any grouping in the beta mode, so I never noticed. That sucks.. but I guess it's good for people who just want to play it solo..? It's weird, since none of the people I've talk to who have this game have said anything about it. =\

Polygon has a pretty unique review of this. They had their #1 Elder Scrolls fan and #1 MMO guy each review it, with each being a bit let down by the game.

Re: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

welp..

http://elderscrollsonline.com/en/news/post/2014/05/08/eso-on-consoles--update?ref=home said:
We know from the frequent questions we get that many of you are excited about playing ESO on the PS4 and Xbox One, and today we'd like to share an official update on the status of these releases. Read on for the latest information:

We've been grateful to our fans for the wonderful response to our recent launch of The Elder Scrolls Online for PC/Mac, but we know many of you are eagerly waiting to play the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

We continue to work on the console versions of ESO, and game development has been progressing steadily, but we are still working to solve a series of unique problems specific to those platforms. Integrating our systems with each console manufacturer's networks—which are both different from the PC/Mac system as well as different from each other—has been a challenging process. It has become clear that our planned June release of the console versions isn't going to be possible. Though we have made great progress, we have concluded that we'll need about six months to ensure we deliver the experience our fans expect and deserve.

We know that the news of an ESO console delay is as disappointing to many of you as it is to us. We want to do what we can to make it up to our fans who want to start playing now, so we have worked out the following arrangement with Sony and Microsoft:

Via a special offer, anyone who purchases and plays the PC/Mac version of The Elder Scrolls Online by the end of June will have the opportunity to transfer their character(s) to either console version when they are released. The offer will allow you to begin playing immediately on the PC/Mac, and then add the PS4 or Xbox One version and transfer the character(s) you have created and developed. And, you don't have to pay full price for the game twice. For $20, eligible PC and Mac players will have the option to add a full, digital version of ESO on either the PS4 or the Xbox One with your character transfer(s), and another 30 days of included game time.

Whether you decide to take advantage of this offer or not, we promise to do everything we can to get the game released on both consoles as quickly as we can. We will keep everyone updated with additional details regarding character transfers, specific offer dates, when you can expect console beta to start, and of course, when ESO on consoles will launch.

Thank you for your patience and loyal support.

I'm still on the fence about this. I love Elder Scrolls but the reviews and the MMO part are throwing me. This delay actually increases my chances of playing... as it stood I think I was going to skip it in the summer.

Changing to an optional subscription model: http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/2015/01/21/your-guide-to-eso-plus-premium-membership So, it's basically buy-to-play now. Similar to what DCUO was before it went completely free-to-play.

Re: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

So, since this game has apparently gone through massive changes in mechanics (not to mention the F2P switchover) a few sites are starting to post "re-reviews" of the newly dubbed ESO: Tamriel Unlimited. Everything sounds pretty damn positive and I'm actually re-hyped for this game again. For a while I was seriously considering dropping my pre-order (it feels like I've had it in my Gamestop queue forever) but I'm 100% certain I'm keeping it now.

Here is mmorpg.com's re-review of the game: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/821/view/reviews/load/377/Elder-Scrolls-Online-One-Year-Later-Ten-Times-Better.html

It’s been a year since Elder Scrolls Online first launched. And while it was a rather contentious game, with hype levels through the roof, I reviewed ESO here on the site. In short, I liked a great deal about it, but knew it had some kinks to iron out. Well, in the year since launch the team at Zenimax has been working feverishly like a Khajit slave to improve their flagship MMO.

But after all that hard work, has Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited really improved? The answer to that is an unabashed and resounding yes. I liked ESO when it launched, but a year later it’s become one of my go-to games. There’s just so much to do, and hundreds of hours later I’ve still got pieces of content I’ve yet to explore. Yes you still have to play through the other factions’ stories, which can be a bit “immersion” breaking, but with the much improved Champion System at level 50 it beats starting an alt to play through the other stories. But what’s great is that if you do want to make alts, any Champion Points earned will be account-wide so you can spend them on all characters.

The new Champion System is a sort of Alternate Advancement that visually looks a bit like Skyrim’s skill system, but instead of opening new skills, you build out a lot of your passives to make your character stronger overall. The Mage constellation focuses mostly on offensive bonuses, the Thief focuses more on reduction of costs for Magicka and Stamina using skills, and the Warrior focuses on defensive bonuses. In a lot of ways, the system reminds me of Borderlands’ “Badass Ranks”. It takes a couple of hours to earn a CP, but the bonuses attained are quite substantial when you max out certain ranks.

ESO-Apr10-1_t.jpg

Because of this new system, Zenimax realized that level 50 players (especially ones who have been 50 for some time) would have a significant advantage over level 1-49 players and therefore they made a level 1-49 AvA campaign for players who want to level through the PVP. In my experience, Sorcerers are still the dominant class in PVP, but Stamina-based characters are now a lot more effective as well. There’s a far lesser discrepancy between the cloth-wearing players and the leather and heavy armored folks these days thanks to many tweaks to classes, armor, and weapons.

There have been loads of quality of life improvements over time too: from armor dyes, to guild stores, crafting daily quests, and even yes, better clarifications on what missions are solo-able only so you know when you can and can’t bring a friend with you. It’s not a perfect solution to the anti-social nature of the main story, but it’s much better than before. In terms of the economy, there are still folks who would like a unified auction house, but I kind of like the Guild Stores. Essentially, they’re set up across Tamriel, from simple road-side shops to big markets in major cities. The active guilds can make a lot of money by competitively pricing their goods, and it’s not uncommon to see Trading Guilds set up shop and dominate markets.

Another major addition to the game which brings it much closer to the feel of Elder Scrolls is the first pass of the Justice System, allowing players to steal, kill, and get accosted by city guards. One of the greatest, and also silliest, parts of all TES games is the ability to pilfer anything you see and kill almost anyone you meet. It let players really play the role of scoundrel, and somehow ZOS has managed to make such activities work in the MMO space. You can kill NPCs, get caught be guards, have a bounty placed on your head, and run from the law via labyrinthine tunnels and sell stolen goods to fences, or “launder” them so that you can sell them in stores.

ESO-Apr10-2_t.jpg

The only part missing right now to this rather deep system are the good guys. Right now, players can become thieves, and be chased down by guards, but there are no player “good guys” to equal out the thieves. That’s coming later this year, when players can opt to become bounty hunters by donning a special tabard that allows them to track and kill players wanted by the law. And of course, all of this will eventually tie into Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests down the line as well. Right now, players with an aptitude for stealing and committing crimes will advance the Legerdemain skill line to improve their thieving abilities too.

I honestly can’t believe it happened, when I think about it. Elder Scrolls Online was in no way as big of a disaster as FFXIV was when it first launched, yet for the second time in two years we have another MMORPG that has managed to completely improve upon its initial experience to become one of the best games in the genre. While I still believe that people turned off by the general ebb and flow of combat and questing in ESO may not suddenly become fans now, for folks who liked the game but wanted more? Well, those people need to log back in today and dive in. Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is finally the game it should have been at launch, and it’s not done improving yet.

ESO-Apr10-3_t.jpg

GAMEPLAY - 8: The score for this one stays the same as last time, because the basics of ESO’s gameplay have not changed. If you didn’t like the questing and combat before, you won’t like them more now. But there’s a load of new content added to the game, and tons of polish added to the combat and progression models. It’s as rock-solid as ever.

VISUALS AND SOUND - 9: Keeping the old score here, as the game still sports excellent voice acting, music, ambiance, and visuals. Plus it all runs at a rock-solid 60-100 FPS even in crowded spaces.

LONGEVITY - 9: Hundreds of hours of unique and interesting story-based questing, a deep crafting system, an excellent 3-faction war, and a much-improved form of alternate advancement in the new Champion System make for a game you could play for months and not run out of things to do.

POLISH - 8: The original game’s buggy launch issues have all but entirely disappeared. It’s not uncommon to run into a bugged quest now or again, and the UI could still use some refinement (thank God for add-ons).

SOCIAL - 7: This score is actually lower than the original review, mainly because while the Guild and AvA systems are still fantastic, there are not a lot of people using the LFG tool and most of the game’s leveling content is a solo affair. A group finder for dungeons and other content could go a long way here.

VALUE - 10: There is so much content here, hundreds of hours’ worth, and you no longer need a subscription to play it whenever you want. Add in the totally reasonable and not at all P2W Crown Store, and you have a winner of a B2P model.

Final Score: 8.5

Pros
-Fair & balanced cash shop
-Much improved end-game progression
-So much content to be played through

Cons
-Needs a better Group Finder
-Progress through story quests can be grindy

Can't wait for June! If anyone else is picking this up on PS4, please let me know. As mentioned, a lot of it is soloable, but I think it would be fun to group up with some board members just for kicks.

I might get it for the 4 if I have some money to spare. I much prefer the subscription free model. If others want to pay to win that's their thing. I'd rather pick and choose where to spend my money.

10% bonus to XP is pay to win? I wouldn't go that far, it's really only useful for power-leveling. Plus the extra currency you get for the cosmetic item store.

Re: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

I'm referring to PtW in general, not specifically ESO. Some people are willing to spend the money to juice up their character and that's fine. FtP lets those who have very little disposable cash (like myself, practically every cent is accounted for in my paychecks) still experience and enjoy the game. Some day, when I get a raise or get some bills paid off, I'll probably go with some extras. I just like the option.

Oh gotcha, I was thinking there were some PtW mechanics to ESO I hadn't heard about yet. I am on the fence right now as far as subbing or not goes. I'm a bit of a mark for stupid shit like cosmetic items and mounts, so if I end up paying for more than a sub buying those individually, I may just sub.. we'll see.

Re: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

5 days!

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2015/06/03/elder-scrolls-online-everything-you-need-to-know

I've since leveled an entirely new character all the way to Veteran Level 14 (for now, the de facto level cap) and I don't recall experiencing a single bug during that journey. The bots are gone, and the delves and solo dungeons are generally enjoyable affairs where you'll find two or three other players at most.

other changes were introduced, including some affecting the starter dungeon experience that turned off so many early players. It's shorter now, and it does a better job of conveying the appropriate lore and establishing a connection to the characters or the main story.

Balance issues were cleared up through a new "Champion" system, and ZeniMax informed players it would also get rid of the bothersome "Veteran" content past the level cap of 50, and add a new spellcrafting system in future patches.

If I could buy it, it would need to be on PC, since I don't own a newer system. :(

If players play on PS or XB, can you play with someone on PC? Or am I screwed?

Re: The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

It's got some MMO launch pains to grow through. Which are expected. The servers are a bit laggy in the big cities, and the queue to log in is sometimes a little wonky, but overall it's going really smooth for me. I have only had one crash and it was at the very start of the opening level in Coldharbor. DCUO used to crash on me every 5-10 minutes at launch, so they're ahead on that front at least.

I had a $20 PSN card laying around from a trade-in a while back, so I decided to try out the subscription option for the first month. At least I'll get the 10% leveling and gold bonuses out of it.

I've made two characters so far:
-Kharjo Jahkkahr, Khajiit Nightblade in the Ebonheart Pact - this one is my main
-Liath Luachra, Imperial Dragon Knight in the Daggerfall Covenant - this one I created as NeoGAF has a huge guild and they all chose the Daggerfall Covenant =\

Some other notes:

-Crown store is pretty interesting. Lots of cool pets, mounts and motifs/skins for your character. Nothing that really looks like "buy to win" IMO - aside from the fact that they also sell potions and soul gems (you use soul gems to recharge elemental weapons or to revive on the spot when you die, instead of reviving at a wayshrine).

-The game is absolutely beautiful. There is some texture pop in at times, but it's nothing any worse that what games like Borderlands have. But seriously. The game is fucking beautiful. The lighting engine in this is just amazing.

-There is SO much crafting. Not quite as much as FFXIV but it's on it's way. I could seem myself just spending an entire day hunting game and making leather armor.

-I'm doing a dual-wield build so far, but also trying out archery. Sadly there is no Skyrim style "slow time" perk for your bow, so you best be confident with it's damage.

Wait, how did reserving ESO get you Goro in MKX? lol

I think you're going to like this one either way. I've played for about 10 hours, am at level 9, and have yet to encounter a mission I couldn't do on my own. That being said, it is kind of fun to be heading toward a mini-boss fight and seeing another player waiting around to see if someone else would hopefully show up to help them.
