I'm a pryomancer and if you pick that for the magic just remember that the intelligence skill does control magic but doesn't control pyromancy... so don't waste points leveling that like I did.

Absolutely nothing is made clear in this game... lot of ways you subtly get burned.

So would it just be best to start out as a Deprived if you have no idea what you want to do then?

I would NOT do that. That's just one of those things for extra challenge. You can wind up doing anything eventually... the character build only really influences the early gameplay.

Ah, so its more from how hard you want to make your game.

...that's kinda stupid in a way.

Thought it was hard until last night I was running around... killed a mini-boss quite easily and then one hit killed the subsequent mini-boss (butcher, giant rat - for those interested)... so I'm feeling pretty good about myself.

Take a few more steps, fall down a hole with three frogs... cursed. Instant kill and now I only have half health until I get it removed.

Time of feeling good about the game lasted about 5 minutes.

There was definitely a period early on when I grinded about 10-12 levels but lately I haven't been. I've just been working towards epic weapons/armor. That's making MORE of a difference.

Getting the Drake sword early on by shooting the tail off the dragon plays HUGE dividends moving forward. Makes everything 10-15x easier.

Yeah, I'll probably get this sooner than later. There are a few games I'm probably going to grab first, but I'll pick this up before the year ends. I played through Demon's Souls as a knight. No magic, just a sword, shield and a heavy reliance on bow & arrows later on in the game. I'd like to use a magic based character this time around though.

You guys should really be playing Breath of Death VII. It's like, 1.50 and is the eprfect game if you want to remember your childhood RPGs, plus witty as anything.

The online component to this game is what makes it so amazing.

Helping with bosses is infinitely fun...especlally because it's a KILLER way to grind souls. But I joined a covenant where I protect this certain stretch of forest so I get summoned to invade worlds by the keeper of the forest... so fun! Either I wreck another human and contribute to their misery or get wrecked because some of the people I invade are 30+ levels ahead of me. But you lose nothing when you lose as a phantom. GREAT feature.

Well - beat Dark Souls today. It took just a shade under 70 hours. Some of the boss battles are among the hardest video game experiences I've ever had. Final boss...holy shit. Relentless pace and so frustrating. Didn't think I would ever win but after two hours I cracked the puzzle enough to take him out.

The PvP is what makes this game TRULY awesome but overall insanely fun. Difficult but very rarely cheap. Once you get past the tedious first few hours it really opens up and gets great.

I need to catch up with these Disgaea games. 2 was disappointing, though, and I don't know if the rest are worth it.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo out and playable today... I'll be checking it out in a little bit but I figured I'd give a heads up for people looking for an RPG but aren't interested in Final Fantasy.

I really enjoyed the demo for this. I've had the full game on preorder for a few months now. Excited for February!

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this demo. I never use magic in roleplaying games but in this one shooting shit with staffs and throwing magic was super fun to do. I put it in my gamefly queue but with the drought of games on I may just go buy it.

Anyone planning on getting KOA:R, the Toys R Us website currently has it for $44.99. Usually they don't have that price in store but I've had luck getting that price matched at other retailers in the past. Hoping Amazon does the price match as they sometimes do, as they are giving some other goodies with it too.

Supposedly this game is as big as Skyrim. Curt Schilling (yep, the baseball player) owns 38 Studios and he recently signed into Neogaf to talk about the demo. He noted that the game can take "40-50 hours (main quest line play) to 200-300 hours (for completionist)." Between this and Mass Effect 3, my spring is going to be spent on my couch. ;)

I had just read Schilling is going to do signings of the game, which seemed odd to me. I knew he owned a game studio, didn't know this was a game from there.

For the price post I made earlier, Newegg has matched the $44.99/Free shipping price of ToysRUs.com.

I'm not surprised to hear that. If you view the world map during the demo, it's positively enormous.

Reading the "ongoing review" on IGN (final is up on Friday) has me more and more hyped for Reckoning. The final build is much more fluid than the demo. Oh, and possibly a first for giant rpgs - the reviewer has sunk a ton of hours into the game and hasn't had any stability issues (freezes, lag, etc).

I think this one is going to need it's own thread upon release.

and by "stability" they of course mean that all the checks have cleared on time, right?

Everything I read about Amalur makes it look like a better and better game. Hopefully by the time I finish Final Fantasy XIII-2, the price will have come down ten dollars or so.

Since this is the rpg thread - that's my future string of games exactly. Final Fantasy XIII-2, followed by Amalur, followed by Dragon's Dogma, followed by the 360 port of The Witcher 2, followed by Borderlands 2. Solid stretch of games, I think.

So my favorite tabletop RPG company, Paizo, has pseudo-licensed* their primary setting for an upcoming MMO. It is very early in development, but they've said they're building it in an EVE framework rather than something like WoW.

*The company to which they licensed it seems to have been created solely to make this game.

Has anyone played Xenoblade yet? I haven't, so I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on it yet.

I was thinking of doing a pre order for it a while back at GameStop, but decided not to since I have too many RPGs on the go. Definitely one I want to look at eventually, though..
