The PRIDE thread

I'm disappointed that my Ron Tripp reference was no-sold :(

I've never even heard of the guy until now. So Rickson's now 9,784 and 1? Upon further research, it appears Rickson disputed the loss because he was "misinformed of the rules." Wow, that's surprising ::)

PRIDE 13 was the first show in which you were allowed to deliver THE KNEES. You guys know what knees.

- Vitor wins by sub! GUH? He had a good fight and it was about time.

- After Enson's destruction losses, Egan tries to restore the family name against Gay. Too bad he got wrecked.

- Herring with another dismantling via very very very very quick submission. Not a whole lot to say about it honestly.

- YES, HENDO. FACING RENZO. The way Gracie hit his head on the canvas and got knocked out was different. Strange, strange fight. On second look he got hit with a right uppercut, it wasn't a great shot, but put him out.

- THE HAMMAH! His music is awesome. Goes is much smaller than Coleman. Holy shit Goes took 4 knees after going out cold. Then he attacks Coleman. Just blacked out really. This Coleman against Brock would've been a fun fight, but having watched this makes his performance against Bonnar the other night even more sad. He won the decision fairly clearly against Bonnar, but he looked like complete shit and I mean...

- Satake, ugh, I have no interest in this. It's a pretty boring fight. Yasuda has pretty much laid on him in the clinch. Fuck this shitty nasty lame fight.

- IGOR vs. Telligman was one of the biggest upsets ever at that point. I have never seen it until just now. HEY TITO ORTIZ. Presenting flowers to a Lion's Den fighter? You must be shitting me. Imagine TITO vs. IGOR. Just kidding about that. Tito would've laid on him and it would've sucked. Like most of this fight. It sucked! If the fight was judged on merit and willingness to attempt to win, Igor should've been given a decision. Beating Igor like this isn't much of an achievement.

- The main event is like my favorite fucking fight ever. It may only be topped by Wanderlei vs. Rampage I or II. It seems like most people are partial to the third fight between Wanderlei and Sakuraba, but not I.

PRIDE 14! TAKAYAMA IN THE MAIN EVENT! WANDERLEI WRECKING ANOTHER PRETENDER! I CAN'T WAIT!

I remember people talking about how that Igor fight was an example of good technical boxing beating a brawler, but I don't really buy that. It sucked.

Hendo not killing Renzo (well, more than once) proves the point he made after the Bisping fight about not wanting to kill his opponent after it's clear that they are out. He was very nice here, telling the ref that he was out. Against Bisping, NOT SO MUCH!

The best thing about Vovchanchyn/Telligman wasn't just that Igor got exposed, but that Tra gassed like a typical Lion's Den fighter 5 minutes in, and still managed to win the fight.

Yeah, that was pretty embarassing for Igor. As for Tra winning, I don't think it was so much his boxing (I've seen a lot of people mention that over the years) as it was Igor's inability to get off his back for much of the fight.

I forgot to mention that in all fights but the first and last, someone was wearing shoes. That was sort of weird.

Igor was originally supposed to face Shamrock, IIRC.

PRIDE 14 is good on paper, but...the prospect of a potentially boring Vitor vs. Heath fight scared the crap out of me.

- WANDERLEI vs Oyama. Oh yes. The ref saved Oyama's life.

- Johil returns after a bad performance against Newton, and, uh, he got subbed by Schembri, and it was cool.

- OH YEAH. Goodridge vs BIG OVEREEM. Scary knee to the head and then Goodridge freaked out and beat the shit out of him after the stoppage. LOL. That was cool.

- I have heard about this fight. Why didn't Pele win more non-vale tudo fights? There has to be something I'm missing. Especially against this pile of trash. Round 2 ruled with teh scrambles. Matsui earned his victory, this was good, and Pele's next fight is no doubt better.

- YEAH CHUCK. Thanks for messing that douchebag up. W/r/t PRIDE shows, undoubtedly the sickest knockout I've seen since Yvel vs. Goodridge. But since that, obv...see avatar.

- Shoji got Hendo in trouble real quick, but Dan bounced back and held court over the rest of the round. Great destruction in round 3. KNEES!

- Vitor and Heath do battle in the ring...no kicks or knees on the ground because he is the lighter guy. Don't like this fight very much. A draw would've been appropriate, but Vitor definitely didn't win.

- Igor and Yvel should end quickly, and does. Yvel's ground game was and is unbelievably LOL.

- OH YEAH TAKAYAMA VS FUJITA. Great first round, Fujita dished out lots of punishment. Takayama, uh, should've tapped. That was a pretty scary moment, but a great fight.

PRIDE 15 has the debut of Rampage, the debut of Nog, and Kendo Kashin's revenge. I am anticipating this watch more than anything else thus far. Goodridge will see the power of NOG JITZ.

PRIDE 15 is a fucking awesome show. Nog toying with Goodridge is so awesome and Rampage vs Saku is still one of my favorite fights of all time.

I liked it. Lots of fun finishes and Mark Kerr finally got forced to go away from meaningful fights forever. I agree completely with the fan reception he's received in Japan.

The introduction is so funny. Geisha's and Bas! Fontes Braga fights for Jesus!

- Big Overeem gets beaten again, this time by Assuerio Silva. CHUTE BOXE REIGN SUPREME. That was completely mindfuckingly retarded. Overeem handed him his leg and it was LOL to see Silva somewhat unable to figure out how to apply a submission.

- Wallid cut a scary promo. AH! Don't understand why Oyama would wear a gi to the ring and not use it in the fight. First round was eh. Arm triangle, see ya.

- IGOR vs SATAKE was awesome. Igor delivered tons of punishment. I'd recommend this fight, lots of violence.

- Herring vs Kerr was pretty blah, like most Kerr fights. He deserved to lose. After the standup, Heath wrecked his shit. That's how you kick ass.

- Matsui vs Love of Jesus was mostly ground warfare. It kinda sucked. War Jesus!

- NOG TIME OH YEAH. Pride was pushing for Tank vs. Goodridge as can be heard in this interview, but Big Nog (who got no pre-fight hype) took center stage and had something to say about that. Awesome triangle. NOGUEIRA JU-JITSU POWAH!

- This fight ruled so much. Rampage's slams were so awesome. Sakuraba was even better, that was the best fight I've seen on this watching run. Technique wins again.

- Ryan wants Wallid after this win against tomato can Kashin. Well go figure. Too bad Kashin has revenge in mind. Ryan fought like total trash, probably would've lost even without the injury. That is, um, some measure of revenge I guess. I don't think Pride was figuring on a Kendo Kashin victory.

PRIDE 16 has some shit like Frye vs. Yvel, Matsui vs. Ninja, and that rematch between Goodridge and Yatsu. Oh yeah...there's this fight between some guy named Coleman and another guy named Nogueira, it might rule, yeah?

In any case I'm getting ever closer to seeing Cro Cop whenever I run one of these videos so that's great. Fedor too, not like that's an after thought or anything. I'm also getting closer to having to watch THE BEST series, so whatever I'm feeling about that stuff, think the opposite.

There are, um, 50 shows left for me to watch. I tried to average it out from the beginning so that I would watch one for every five days and be done around this time next year. I've watched 9 shows over a period of 45 days. Unless my math is failing me, I'm on course. I do expect, however, to finish much sooner than that.

"AY! I GOTTA QUESTION: WHY I ALWAYS GET FUCKED!?"- YVEL

"WE CAN DO IT AGAIN BROTHER!"- FRYE
That was a good fight too, until all the shenanigans.

The shenanigans started pretty much right from the get-go and helped the quality of the fight. I was glad to see Frye's inner NHB make a quick appearance during that scratching eyes bullshit.

9/11 tribute, good on PRIDE. Great drumming thing at the start. They had decided the winner of Nog vs. Coleman would fight for the new heavyweight title (figuring it would be Coleman judging by the later reaction), so...

- The rematch of a great fight between Goodridge and Yatsu starts me off. At least Yatsu didn't take a crazy beatdown. Gary was gonna choke him out. Ok. Good explanation of their judging after this fight, btw.

- Yes, Yamamoto debuts as new PRIDE jobber. Silva knocks him out in about 10 seconds, lulz. HEY I SEE ANDERSON. Anyone know why Assuerio disappeared from MMA for two years following such a victory? I'm thinking perhaps he wanted a title shot with Pride and didn't get it or something. Yamamoto pretty much had a broken face.

37 minutes, for reference

- Yes, Matsui/Ninja was as good as Curry said it was. Sakuraba and Wanderlei are in opposing corners. Next show has the title match. This was definitely one of the most awesome fights I've seen in any discipline of combat. Fuck yeah this is so great. Ninja's soccer kicks are amazing and he lands them repeatedly. In R2, the fight should've been stopped. Great finish in R3. I love the toe to the eye and double stomp finish.

- Two of my least favorite fighters here. It might not be a stretch to say I hate both these dudes. Admittedly I'm bored by this, because I hate the way Arona gains top position and does jack shit.

- Shoji vs Semmy is gonna be craaazzzy. Semmy gave him a great ass kicking in a must watch freakshow fight. One for the all-time archives there. The knees and kicks were hilarious in a sick and twisted sort of way.

PRIDE 17 WANDERLEI VS SAKURABA PROMOS I CAN'T UNDERSTAND AT ALL.

- Awesome shirt, TERRORISTS SUCK. Good job Don. He is way too funny. Yvel had some Rickson help for this and he would need it, and it didn't help him worth shit. Frye's entrance is so corny and full of win. Was Yvel on fucking drugs? He is a big time piece of trash and I'm glad Frye fuckin' headBUTTed him. To fight the way Yvel fought is awfully lame, but Frye is the man. And with Affliction going under in addition to his lack of appearances in PRIDE from here on out, I'm glad I won't be seeing him anymore.

- Nog vs Coleman, again I wonder if they were trying to use Nogueira as a stepping stone for Coleman so he could face Heath. Maybe. Maybe not. I have not seen this fight in a while. Coleman's in love with the neck crank, and you are not gonna beat someone like Nog with an old-school, largely ineffective submission like that. There's gotta be a way to find out how many people have been subbed by can opener. Then Nog showed him what happens when you do dumb shit. Triangle armbar, see ya. The look on Coleman's face perfectly summed up that disaster. Quadros alludes to the rivalry between BTT and Chute Boxe, we are done. The interviews prior to fights and after the show in some cases basically foreshadow where they want things to head (in this case it was Coleman/Frye getting spoiled by their performances) and it's awesome how they always bet on the big gaijin and he ultimately fails, time and time again.

PRIDE 17 is fucking jumbo stacked and quite lengthy to boot. I won't be able to watch it in one day. Double title matches, Ninja vs. Hendo, Renzo, Igor, Semmy, Rampage! OH, AND. MIIIIIIIIIRKKKKKKKKOOOOOOOOO

Oh God, I forgot about Mirko vs. Takada.

UFC is going to start showing old PRIDE matches on Spike in an Unleashed format.

Pretty cool, I think.

I'm not too enthusiastic about it as I'd lay a heavy bet that the fights we'll see are all feature either current UFC fighters or PRIDE converts. Basically they won't be showing any Fedor so fuck 'em.

Can anyone tell me how Hideo Tokoro got the big fight w/ Royce Gracie at Shockwave 2003? Tokoro had lost 4 of his last 8 fights before this fight and was fairly journeyman like record wise overall. Gracie was pretty much only fighting gimmicks or legends by this point w/ Pride.

Was actually '05. Tokoro already had a following from ZST and he had KO'ed long-time Shooto champion Pequeno Noguiera on the big stage at Hero's 2. He was just popular enough and provided enough legitimacy as an opponent without being a real threat to Royce.

909 I miss the reviews...

What do you guys feel would have happened had Rickson fought Saku around Pride 10 or whenever that was briefly scheduled?

Depends on whether the person answering trains BJJ or not.
