There's at least one chapter maybe several in Bob Holly's book dedicated to WOW.

Fact that he still looked green in SMW 5 or 6 years later can be attributed to the fact that he was part-time and in & out of wrestling at the end of the '80s and start of '90s because territories dried up, he hated Memphis, and he made more money in his dayjob (as a welder IIRC).

In fact, he was super close to retiring entirely from the business until Paul Bearer randomly decided to vouch for him and got brought in as Thurman Plugg ("My friends call me Sparky!")
