When was the first three way dance/triple threat match in the US? Feels like something that wouldn't have happened until the fringes of the 80s. I have no knowledge basis for this, just sounds right before they blew up in the 90s.

Bill Watts did a 4 way in 85 or 86. AWA did several during the TCS. I just reviewed one a week or 2 ago in the AWA thread.
The rules were modified by everyone. Sting/Angel/Vader was promoted as a Triangle match for WCW, even though it was 2 matches back to back IIRC.
Gun to my head I would say the first one on WWF TV was Owen/Goldust/____ (HHH?) on RAW, but they had been running them as main events at house shows since 97. Having hybrid tweeners helped make those matches work.

Having fun thinking about Capt Lou jumping to other promotions after Vince canned him:
AWA- Too much roster turn over to think of one guy that fits. He could slide into the Snuka manager role when ever Snuka decided to show up for work. He likely would do a weekly wrap around promo ala the Big K. And it would be awesome "GROOVY GREG! THE GALS LOVE HIM, THE CAPTAIN LOVES HIM! Watch out Hennig!"

JCP - I'm putting him with Bugsy and Boogie Woogie as the wacky mid card team.

Memphis - Capt being over the top fits right in with the Memphis mayhem.

Everyone else is pretty much DOA, so Lou working for Afa's east coast shows or the NWF makes the most logical sense.

Talk about a weird plateau of a career. He worked Australia's WCW in '71, betting there's more there. But somehow he's in WWF by '73, a semi-star as tag team champion alongside Haystacks Calhoun and he just stays at that level the rest of his career.

He probably figured being a WW(W)F midcard lifer was a safer bet than trying to grind it out and make a name for himself through the territories. I think it proved to be wise, especially post expansion when his loyalty was rewarded with a cushy office job.

Garea was apparently around 30 when he started. Through me for a little loop seeing this at first.
Actually looking at that list a lot of the guys were burnt up pretty fast. By the time Luger won in 85, Orton is 2 years away from being washed. Garea is a JTTS. Graham is semi retired at best. Backlund is wrapping up his run. Larry Z has some good stuff left. Steamboat almost retired two or 3 times in the 80s. Tommy Rich was a year or 2 away from being totally a shell of himself. David and Mosca Jr never made it. Mike Von Erich dies within 2 years.
Brad Armstrong and Nord young around for another 15 years or so. Terry Taylor was burning bridges and would be a JTTS in 3 years.
Skip Young (Sweet Brown Sugar) was about to enter WCCW purgatory.
And then there's Flair. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
