Everytime I go to a website this keeps opening up:

I've tried Macafee, I've tried blocking the website (and this is just one of the many), but it keeps popping up.

Any suggestions?

That kind of looks like the fake virus alert that destroyed my old computer. Removing the virus ended up deleting crucial files that I couldn't recover since it also destroyed my internet connection. Apparently I was supposed to be using "safe mode" when cleaning the mess up.

I realize that story is not very helpful to you... but I like stories.

Yeah, it's a rather nasty trojan that's been going around called Vundo. It's a pain in the ass. Like Spiff said, download that program, and after it fully runs do a virus scan.

its always good to do a reformat and install every six months or so anyway. Burn a CD or DVD with all of your favorite programs so that you can get your system back to normal in about a couple of hours... Most of that time will be spent downloading and installing Windows patches, anyway.

Another wonderful little program is located at filehippo.com. The program scans your system and tell you what programs that you have installed need updating.

I just wish I could take direct advantage of my 20 Mb download speed. The most I ever get is 10% of that.

I got the malware bug that makes every site I go to has an ad for Vimax, and it redirects my google searches and I can't access yahoo on IE.

Anyone? For some reason malwarebytes.org isn't working, I think the ware is blocking it

If you can get a hold of combofix.exe, that should do it. Worked for me, it was redirecting every search from every search engine, I'd have to C&P each link I wanted to click on...god that gets annoying in a hurry.

I have something that removed run32dll.exe, sometimes (but rarely) re-directs wiki based google searches to some ad page that's pretty blank, any google search for "missing run32dll.exe" doesn't work (the previously mentioned re-direct), and I can't install any new programs at the moment either. Before I discovered the "no new installations" problem (and the fact an ad-aware scan won't finish... and I also just found out I can't get Azuereus to download torrents anymore) I was just getting stupid pop-ups that could be easily closed (and not even pornographic or anything bad - pretty standard) so I didn't care. Now I care and want to fix it.

Would reinstalling Windows help or hurt, here? What info gets saved and what gets lost when such a measure is taken?

Also, I went to combofix and it implied that someone who doesn't know what they're doing (ie me) should not use it. True, or falsehood?

A fresh install of windows is possible without deleteing any information, it would restore your missing run32dll.exe and then you will be able to clean it using the proper manor.

If you can remember when it started, try a simple system restore to any date before that popup started happening. I had a similar virus/trojan that would keep popping up for "GET THIS FIREWALL CAUSE YER NOT PROTECTED" and a system restore did the trick.

Tell me more about this "system restore". It was July 27th that I buggered things up so if I could some how restore to the 26th, that would be beans of coolness.

I had to think about it, but my memory indicates you were not the one who infected EHME. That was (allegedly) T.I.

I shall trust this website, Numbers.

Start > Programs > accessories > system tools > system restore.

Choose your date you want to roll back to. Then restart.

That sounds a bit too sci-fi for me, but if this Malwarebytes deal doesn't fix things (and the LAST time I tried fixing things, I deleted infected files and destroyed my computer) I'll give that a go.

Ok, so this is what happened with Malwarebytes, and this is what happened when I used Mcaffe and Ad-Aware recently. It hits a certain point in the scan, then the program just stops working and needs to be closed. Not helpful.

Sabre, you're discussing this system restore bit very nonchalantly. There has to be some risk involved, right? What are my pros and cons and how badly can someone like me (judge based on my posts in here) mess this up?

Try running it in safe mode.

It might uninstall some programs that you have installed in the time frame of how far back you go to restore. It won't delete any files though.

Also, system may not be an option if he does not have it activated. I've seen some viruses turn off system restore and got rid of the backup dates.

System restore is fool proof, its literally a 5 or so click session.

And yes, you may find some programs are missing but they are still in their usual places they just need a reinstall with no harm caused to them.

If the virus hasn't disabled it, that is. A lot of them go through and ruin your system restore points as their first priority so you can't just revert & be done with it.

As long as you have a legit issue, combofix won't break your computer. It's just not something you want to run for no reason.

Aaaand I'm done. I don't recall when I last restarted the computer since this problem came up, but after trying to run Mal in Safe Mode (it froze there too), booting Windows is met with a "Unauthorized Change" message that doesn't allow me to do a thing. I did get a prompt to use the Vista CD and click the "Repair Windows" option, but that did nothing. It says it recovered something, but restarting the computer just causes the same roadblock to pop-up.

It seems my next option is to just flat out re-install Vista and go from there, but what will this do, really? Will I lose files? Will I keep everything - including the malware? I really don't want to pay an expert to fix this, but I fear I may have to go down that road.

Does your computer have an option where it re-installs Windows but keeps all of your files? I know some computers come that way now.

System restore will probably handle this if you can successfully start up your computer and load windows.

It doesn't get rid of any files you have, all it would get rid of is updates you have made.

For instance, if you downloaded the new version of Java today, and then did a system restore to restore your system to yesterdays settings, then after the system restore you would just have to download the new version of java again.

A system restore, is not a factory restore(which restores your computer so it is as plain as it was out of the box, in which case yes you lose everything but what came pre-loaded).
