WWF New Generation Thread III

I count Summerslam 94 as a main event. At worst it was a double main event, at best it was one of those shows where it was a case of the main event doing everything but closing the show.

Instant megastar and totally not side tracked after his 3:16 promo Steve Austin main events the last SStars before Summerslam vs Marc Mero.

Austin gets the role of getting laid out so Mankind and Mero can brawl (Mommy!) while Goldust commentates and Undertaker races in to save Sable and Mero.

Taker battles WHO? Plus Dirty Dutch enters the ring with John Hawk to brawl with Tracy Smothers and TNT

I'm still curious what the plan for Ahmed vs Shawn was for the RAW world title match? I assume Vader and Farooqu would just do a run in to set up Summerslam rematches

Luger hits the slam and pins Yoko.... then????

Luger vs Borga and Yoko at house shows anyway (w/ tag with Tatanka sprinkled in)

SSeries can stay the same....

Rumble..... Maybe Crush to try and build off the Savage angle? The amount of top level heels are nil. Shawn and Diesel aren't ready.

Mania.....?

Shawn was ready. He main evented Survivor Series 92 18 months earlier. Motivated Luger vs heel HBK could've been as good as the 88-90 Luger-Flair matches.

Diesel wasn't ready but he wasn't ready in 1995 either. The 94 Rumble put him over in real life so Luger-Diesel makes at least as much sense in spring 1994 as Mabel-Diesel did in the real deal August 95.

Ending Summerslam like that is one of the dumbest booking choices ever. Unless Luger went into business for himself to celebrate because he DID think he won the belt!

Is Vince going to have Shawn job before the Razor angle is taken care of? Shawn had just come back from a roid suspension too, so giving him a main event after that wouldn't play well.

Luger/Nash headlining WM X could compete with Taker/Gonzalez from a year earlier. I'd rather have Owen run in the Rumble and toss Bret illegally to set up Bret getting a claim to the Mania main event as an altenative to the double elimination finish.

That makes for tough booking too unless Yoko works the Casket match and the Rumble and the same guys who run in the casket match also side with Yoko in the Rumble to carry him to his 2nd straight win.

Diesel had a world title match with Bret at King of the Ring 1994. A motivated Luger working him in an alternate version of that time probably won't stink up the joint like Taker.

Luger/Yokozuna is enough of a program to head to Survivor Series like it did, only it gets the juice of the title change to boost house shows, especially when you add in stips. The ol' cage match with Cornette and/or Fuji in a shark cage pops houses. Survivor Series goes exactly the same. The only variable is Borga's health since if he stays healthy that's the Wrestlemania main event. But if he doesn't, Bret absolutely forces their hand and probably still gets the title, just with more bullshit from Owen and Perfect.

Luger-Borga as Mania X main event is horrendous garbage unless they did a spot where after Lex won he pulled off Borga’s singlet to reveal his “Exit Only” tramp stamp and then stuck a flagpole up his ass. But somehow I don’t think that would have happened in 1994 WWF.

Borga was fine but never had the chance to really show anything of note. I'll die on that hill. It wasn't the role and certainly wasn't the company. He was the exact kind of guy who could have good matches with smaller, better workers. Not getting a Bret/Borga match sucks because he was made for someone like Bret.

I guess a wildcard for Luger is bringing Quake back a bit sooner and trying to reheat him.

Quake is announced as a Rumble participant and wins as a face. Luger, fresh off a world title win over Borga on the undercard, comes down with the title to shake his hand. Quake hugs him, then mauls him with the butt splash of doom. He covers Luger with the Canadian flag as the US realizes the true evil of Canada and ignores our long term trading deals and peaceful border as America declares war.
Bret Hart turns heel in the aftermath and reunites with Owen again before they can even wrestle a match. Team Canada is strengthened when Kevin Nash realizes parts of Canada are actually south of Detroit, so he joins them.

If you need a challenger for Luger, bring Haku back from SWS for a little bit. To be honest he should've been one of Fuji's hitmen for Taker anyway just for name value, speaking as the kid who had no idea what a "Ten-roo" even was. Although gimme 20 minutes of Luger/Tenryu, now that I think about it.

Still odd they didn't have Duggan in the Rumble despite this not airing until after the Rumble (was he hurt?)

Plus the whole "Yokozuna hasn't been knocked off his feet" thing meanwhile Macho Man had him down at the Rumble. AND Macho is commentating over the angle!

3 shitty refs stand there while Yoko slowly murders Duggan.

didn't make TV but there was one Bret/Borga match. It did take place at a TV taping so it does exist on tape somewhere!

The Undertaker did not appear due to suffering an illness
In a segment only aired on USWA TV, Vince McMahon was a guest of the King’s Court; after Lawler complained about Bret Hart being referred to as the king, Vince noted that Bret pinned Lawler the previous Monday in Memphis; Lawler then responded by saying it was Paul Neighbors’ fault and he would face him the following Monday to get revenge; Lawler went on to state that if he didn’t send his opponent to the hospital, he would personally refund everyone in the audience their money; upon hearing this, Vince told Lawler to expect to see him in Memphis because he wanted to be one of the people Lawler refunded

Razor Ramon pinned Damien Demento with the Razor’s Edge at 4:26

Bastion Booger pinned Mike Khoury at 2:04 with the sit-down splash moments after Khoury split the back of his head open on the ringpost after Booger hit an Avalanche on the outside

The vault guys will shun that potential lost classic but shouldn't. I gotta know how that match turned out. If it's motivated Bret and not shitty Coliseum Video Bret it's gonna slap. Either way its gotta be Borga's best match my default.

Super into Razor/Yokozuna in 93 too. That's likely super fun once the nerve hold is off.

- Lanny's full body suit I've mentioned twice is now uploaded. Clear proof the Vault crew are CXFers
- I enjoyed the announcers taking the piss out out the jobbers as they came out for the 40 man battle royal
- Bret/Shawn 1 on 1
- Taker and Warrior as strange bedfellow partners
- WWF champ Macho Man faces the stiff challenge of the Repo Man
- Taker vs Razor is honestly the most intriguing thing on the line up

Charlie Minn: Shitty Announcer is the same as Charlie Minn: Expoitation Documentary Filmmaker, right?

In 1994 when Fatu missed a few spots with injury, Tonga Kid/Tama stepped in to team with Samu against the Smoking Gunns. Was this just a favor or could this potentially have led to a full-time spot?

All Meltzer said about it was

Fatu is out of action after Mabel landed on him wrong on 2/24 in Whitewater, WI. The Head Shrinkers worked the U.S. shots against Smoking Gunns, so on the West Coast they used Fatu’s brother Tonga Kid as part of the team, while on the Eastern shows, Afa teamed with Samu. With the exception of a show in Oakland (the Samoans grew up in San Francisco), the Gunns have won all the matches. That’s a change of philosophy from the 1980s WWF which wanted to show its power over its wrestlers by usually having them do jobs in their hometown, and now it’s the traditional wrestling approach of letting guys win when the tour comes to their hometown.

Was it ever explained why he was rich to begin with?

I always hated that no real backstory existed for him, just because.

Should've at least lost it all to a face, you know? Like Razor or something

Apparently DiBiase explained it as part of his heel turn on Houston TV as his investments had paid off and made him rich, but I've never seen the segment myself. Not much of a backstory besides that and I agree that he should've had a fall from grace where he lost all of his money to...someone, but not sure who would've fit the bill.

So Houston was apparently airing the heel vignettes at the same time as Dibiase came in as a face for a few weeks. They ran Dibiase vs OMG to play off their UWF feud (Wrestlingclassics says it didn't do well at the gate). Ron Bass interfered to set up Houston/Dibiase vs Bass/OMG.

WrestlingClassics also sites "investments" as Dibiase's kayfabe excuse for his wealth.

Boesch was still running the local promotion for the WWF so I guess it's possible the MDM vignettes aired until after the heel turn.

If he beats Razor at Summerslam, Razor becomes his domestic. Razor wins, Dibiase declares bankruptcy. Razor wins and hands out money to kids at ringside while Dibiase has a tantrum and is forced to leave on a bus. When Dibiase comes back later on, he's just fully stealing money from Jack Tunney and all Corporation members (finally using the IRS ties properly in the process).
