Through the Booking Glass: March 1984 Week 2

March 1984, Monday, Week 2

The WWF officially announced that the WWF Women’s Tag Team Title will be decided at the show in Philadelphia on Saturday, Week 4.  They have not said which two teams will be in that match.  Maybe they should just put the first four women over the age of 18 that buy a ticket into that match.  It might have more interest than whatever they actually do.

March 1984, Tuesday, Week 2

Stan Hansen defeated Adrian Adonis to win the Southwest Championship Wrestling Heavyweight Title last night, ending a reign that had lasted six months.  SCW is apparently going to hold Adonis off their next few shows, as they say he appears fatigued and would rather pull him short term and avoid potential injury.

WWF Championship Wrestling taping (March 1984, Tuesday, Week 2)

The WWF returned to the Fieldhouse in Hamburg, PA after a lengthy absence to tape this weekend’s TV.

In an extremely short match, The Wild Samoans defeated Steve Lombardi and S.D. Jones in 3:52 when Afa pinned Lombardi with a Headbutt.

Rene Goulet defeated Billy Joe Travis in 2:50 by pinfall.  These two didn’t click at all and I wasn’t even remotely impressed with Travis.

Samu pinned Nick DeCarlo in 2:42 with a Flying Headbutt.  These two have really good chemistry, which made a horrendous match less horrible.

Gene Okerlund then interviewed Pat Patterson, who said he doubted he was done with Ivan Koloff but was rooting for The Great Wojo to take care of him.

Invader # 2 and Ivan Putski defeated Charlie Fulton and Tiger Chung Lee in 2:21 when Invader pinned Fulton with a Heart Punch.

Victory Corner was next.  Lord Alfred Hayes interviewed Andre the Giant and tried to get him to admit that Big John Studd slammed him a year or so ago, which Andre vehemently denied.  Hayes continued to argue with Andre until Andre finally grabbed Hayes by the lapel and told him never to call him a liar again.  My word!

In a non-title match, Iron Mike Sharpe pinned WWF Intercontinental Champion Tony Garea in 1:50 with a Running Forearm Smash.  This likely positions Sharpe for a shot at the Intercontinental Title because why not?

Chris Carter pinned Frankie Williams in 2:03 with a Piledriver.  Wow, can this show get any worse?

Salvatore Bellomo pinned Jules Strongbow in 3:04 with a Pizza Splash.

Curt Hennig defeated Dr. Jerry Graham by disqualification in 2:48.

Chief Jay Strongbow defeated Ivan Koloff in 10:45 by count out when Koloff left the ring to confront The Great Wojo.  Wojo and Koloff brawled all the way to the locker room after the match.  Hot finish, so-so match.

March 1984, Wednesday, Week 2

The TV taping in Hamburg, PA drew a sell out of 2,200 last night, the first sell out in Hamburg in six months.  Despite the report you read on this site last night, most found the TV taping to be pretty good.

Leilani Kai found herself in trouble yet again last night, this time provoking and attacking Joyce Grable backstage before TV.  Kai was fined an undisclosed amount for the incident, which by all accounts was completely Kai’s fault.  Kai and Grable were to face each other at TV but the match was cancelled due to the incident.  Grable received her payout due to the cancellation not being her fault.

A video highlighting the Ivan Koloff-Great Wojo feud will air on TV this weekend.

Also airing will be a video hyping Akira Maeda, complete with footage of his recent matches in Japan.  I’m told by those who know that this is really good.

Hulk Hogan vs. Tiger Chung Lee has been announced as next week’s TV main event.

March 1984, Thursday, Week 2

I’ve been told Tony Garea vs. Iron Mike Sharpe for the Intercontinental Title is being added to the show in Philadelphia in two weeks.  It won’t be announced locally until after their non-title match airs this weekend but will be likely be announced on TV locally during the show.

March 1984, Friday, Week 2

Referee Danny Davis’ contract has less than 30 days remaining in it but he’s expected to get an extension.

March 1984, Saturday, Week 2

A correction from two days ago.  Iron Mike Sharpe is actually booked for a tour of New Japan Pro Wrestling later this month and as a result will not be able to be in Philadelphia for the show in two weeks, so Garea’s opponent has not been named.

March 1984, Sunday, Week 2

TV ratings held steady this weekend.

Danny Davis has signed a contract extension but only until mid-June.  He has been told after this deal he will not be re-signed but will be brought back should the company’s finances improve.
